Do coconuts smell like windex?

Every couple of years, I get adventurous and buy one of those whole coconuts they have at the grocery store. Usually, I just end up throwing it out after a couple of months because I don't know what to do with it. Last year, I threw one out because it smelled like windex. I thought perhaps it was contaminated during transportation. Couple of weeks ago bought another one and just opened it up, and once again it smells quite a bit like windex. Is this normal?

Also, what should I do with it. I would like to eat it in some way.

I've never seen a coconut smell like windex. Maybe it was spoiled?

You can eat the coconut meat itself. You can drink the milk that's in the middle. S'good. Doesn't (normally) taste like windex.

the ones you get in the grocery store are nothing like getting one in the wild. The meat is dryer and the milk is watery. Try keeping it in a cool place for a while until the milk gets a little thicker. It's a good addition to Indian Curries.

Thank you ratbastid and lucifer. I'll try another one very soon and report back. I'll open this one up as soon as i get it this time instead of waiting a few weeks.

They're fun to pop with target blasters.

...

Nope. Smells like coconut. That oily coconut aroma. Yes.

My guess is that it spoiled on you. What you were probablly smelling was ammonia, lots of foods that rot will begin to give off naturally occurring ammonia as a by-broduct of the decomposers doing their job. Although I have not specifically heard of coconuts doing this, I think its a good guess.

If you still smell it on a fresh one, then it may just be your sniffer. Coconuts do have a rather strong/distinctive odor, and your brain may just be crossing its signals.

the liquid stuff inside the coconut isn't coconut milk, that's coconut water... it's a nice refreshing drink (Goya sells it in the can), but it's really not rich enough for cooking purposes - you can make coconut milk from squeezing freshly grated coconut with boiling water...

Why I know that much about coconut escapes me right now.. but it's my trivial contribution for the day...
