Pirate Party

OK, so if you were thinking about having a "Pirates of the Carribean"-themed party, what foods would you serve? I'm thinking:

Rum
Grog (wtf is grog, anyways? Better not be oatmeal!)
Moldy bread--just kidding! But maybe bread with green food dye in spots, lol.

OK, that's it for the pirate food. Fortunately the Carribean add on (mostly so folks can dress like a tropical native instead of a pirate if they like) opens up other doors like:

Tropical fruits
Poi (lol!)
Pork (?)

What else would you add to the menu?

Charlatan 03-28-2006 11:07 AM

Boiled leather... good for fighting scurvy.

Willravel 03-28-2006 11:08 AM

Salted meats! Think Proscuttio, but not thinly sliced from the deli. You could also have some hen or other game. When pirates would come ashore, they would not always have the capitol to purchase pork, so they'd have to hunt for local meat.

Have you ever eaten Hard Tack?

Charlatan 03-28-2006 11:11 AM

A ninja party would be better... sushi for everyone!!!!!

Daniel_ 03-28-2006 11:13 AM

Grog was a sailsors' drink. In the Royal Navy, each soldier had a daily ration of Rum, and in order to prevent scurvy, each sailor was given limes (hence the Yanks calling the Brits "Limeys").

Grog was a mixture of Rum, Lime juice, water and sugar.

It ought to be dark Navy rum, and it ought to be dark brown unrefined sugar.

fresnelly 03-28-2006 11:15 AM

Arrh, that sounds like fun.

I did a google search and there's plenty of good ideas out there.

I like the sound of these two:

Shark's Blood in your Drink: Freeze red Kool-aid or fruit punch into cubes ahead of time. You add these to Sprite, or whatever clear beverages you're serving, and they melt and slowly turn the drink to pink/red.

Hot Dog Octopus: Slice a hotdog lengthwise 1/2 or 2/3 of the way up a couple of times so that it has "legs". Present it as an hors d'oevres on a decorated tray, standing up on end with the legs splayed out.

As for games, I recommend "What Shall We Do With A Drunken Sailor?"; which I leave to you're imagination. :D

Pusser's Rum! Yum!

Every Friday in Autumn in the town (home to Blackbeard, and the ECU Pirates) we just moved from was Freeboot Friday (Freebooter being another word for Pirate). You have to love a town that fully embraces its inner-buccaneer.

Though they weren't pirates, I strongly recommedn renting Master and Commander to get a depiction of sea rations at the time.

ratbastid 03-28-2006 11:33 AM

And what should you wear? A vest!

cellophanedeity 03-28-2006 11:50 AM

  • Cornish foodstuffs. Cornwall is known for it's pirating.
  • jello or cookies cut into pirate shapes, like swords, hooks, pirate hats, and fish
  • cupcakes done up with pirates on them
  • A roasted chicken with colourful feathers around it... A Parrot! ^_^

I've sort of been planning on having a pirate party too. ^_^

Charlatan 03-28-2006 11:55 AM

I asked my wife for suggestions, she is *very* clever:

Cocolate Money (the type in gold foil)

Make your fish walk the plank with: Salmon on a plank

Ahi Ahi Tuna... (aye aye Cap'n)

She was driving and had to get off the phone... so that's all I have.

Ladyfingers...

Cutlass (cutlets)

maleficent 03-28-2006 11:55 AM

a tank of blue jello, with swedish fish or gummy fish in it...

or blue jello shots, with a fishie in it...

(blue to simulate the ocean)

Make the jello with club soda or a little champagne and it will have bubbles in it)

ShaniFaye 03-28-2006 12:13 PM

Beef Jerky!!!!

Sultana 03-28-2006 02:56 PM

You guys are so creative! You're all invited to my party.
Char, why would I want a ninja party? Ninjas suxor.
Just kidding, but I can't afford high-end sushi for everyone.

This is a FANTASTIC idea, I love it so much! What a great decoration for the groaning board. Hey, don't they have gummy rats somewhere?!?

For "game" ideas, I was trying to think of particularly piratical activities, like:
plank walking
barnical scraping
lilly-livering
parrot molesting :hmm:
treasure hiding
treasure stealing
deck swabbing
Something about Davey Jones' locker

I gotta figure out how to make these into games.

I've been watching Horatio Hornblower, that should help. :D

Willravel 03-28-2006 03:31 PM

If you're looking for games, try invading your neighbors homes and stealing all of their valuables. Then go and trade the booty for prostitutes.

Yo, ho, yo, ho, the pirates life for me!

Toaster126 03-28-2006 03:57 PM

Get some hardtack. I'm not sure if that's an actual product one can buy, or if you just do something crazy with biscuits like leaving them out for several months. Perhaps you can contract with a pet store for the infestation of weevils you'll need to put in the hardtack.

Mondak 03-28-2006 04:31 PM

I am a giant dork

You can still get hardtack, and thanks to this thread, I'm wracking my brain trying to remember the name of the store that sells it that I just read about a week ago.

Edit: who needs memory when you have google. It's Bent's Crackers. Been around for a long time.

Hey, that's stuff's pretty expensive, for being a glorified cracker:

2 boxes (of ten hardtack)............. $25.00
6 boxes .......................................$55.00
12 boxes......................................$96.00
24 boxes .....................................$180.00
Hardtack crackers are 3"x3" and 1/2" thick with 16 holes.

I'd have to pay extra for the weevils. :|

maleficent 03-29-2006 01:54 PM

other recipes you could try would be Jerk Chicken (caribbean themed), anything creole style (lots of recipes you could use there),

Planters Punch

this site has a ton of ideas for decorations and other stuff that you could adapt to adultlike...

Nah, just leave them outside for a while. If you don't get weevils, you'll surely attract rats, which are also authentic. :)

Elphaba 03-29-2006 03:21 PM

You and your guests will want to talk like pirates. :)

i don't know what that is,
but it sounds like a pretty good party game itself.

as for foods, i'd agree with jerk chicken.
jerk anything is pretty good.

if you happen to roast any meats before hand,
make sure you keep the bones around afterward.
left over beef rib bones and chicken leg bones might make for a nice pile o'bones... could be a good decoration.
(just make sure ALL the meat is gone.)

You might substitute pilot bread. I belive I've seen it at my local safeway. Quite a bit cheaper too.

Plaid13 04-23-2006 10:48 PM

wasnt hard tack just a really basic simple bread that they didnt allow to rise? i remember someone making that stuff in school i bet its pretty easy to find a simple recipe for it. bet its just like flour and water or something insanely stupid like that.

Grasshopper Green 04-25-2006 01:50 PM

So, did you have the party yet? If so, how did it go?

snowy 05-22-2006 05:26 PM

Yes, Sultana, if you had this party I want to know how it went.

I'm planning my own Pirates and Wenches party for July (to coincide with the release of Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man's Chest). Anyone else had any pirate parties recently?

I'm definitely serving spiced rum, grog, but the food ideas are going to take more time, especially since in my case it has to be vegetarian.

Sultana 06-08-2006 01:55 PM

I should mention that the Pirate Party is at the end of the month (June), for Jack1.0's birthday! Still looking over the suggestions here.

Mondak, I'm planning on picking up some stuff from your link, so it *can't* be dorky! :P

Mal, I'm going going GOING with your blue jello idea! I'm going to use a giant fishbowl, have candy rocks at the bottom, gummy fish and sharks, make a gummy reef by melting gummy stuff together, and the jello will be spiked, so folks will ladle their jello shots out of the aquarium!!

Decided to to with finger foods and the like, so Jack doesn't get stuck grilling outside all night or helping out with the food. Will have "Parrot wings" heh. I've already put in my order for gummy rats for table decor. :D Will make some kind of biscuits with raisens/dried cranberries/choc. chips for weevils. Fruit platter. Quiche (just kidding).

Gonna decorate with fishnets (uhh, not stockings. Although that would be funny, maybe in the bathroom, see if anyone *gets* it) and white twinkle lights, inside and out.

I'd still welcome any ideas though!
