Jon Woos' "The Killer"
Anyone know why this movie isn't released on DVD or why there's no talk of it coming on DVD?
|
Never heard of it.
Sounds violent. When'd it come out, maybe that factors into why it's not out on DVD. Sometimes movie companies just forget that they made whatever movie a long time ago, and just forget to put it on DVD. |
You have never heard of this film? Yikes!!
Get thee to a video store! Pronto! Rent the following: Bullet in the Head, City on Fire, A Better Tomorrow, A Better Tomorrow II, Hard Boiled and The Killer. This will begin your education in the astounding coolness that was Hong Kong action! Why are you still reading this? GO! |
There is a few different versions of The Killer on DVD. The release by Criterion was discontinued for some legal reason and has made it hard to find, and very expensive ($100 to $500). There are also a couple of combo packs containing The Killer and Hard Boiled or Bullet In The Head, but I don't know who sells those.
I'd say your best bet is ebay or Amazon auctions. If you don't mind doing a little research to make sure you get the right region code and good quality, you could also try some of the Asian film distributors like Hkfilms and YesAsia. I saw that YesAsia had a Hero's Collection with both The Killer and A Better Tomorrow in it for $30US and free shipping. Hope this helps. |
I have the Special Collectors Edition on DVD (R2) and it's awesome! And it is just as violent as it sounds! And any film directed by John Woo and starring Chow Yun Fat is a must see....

okay, well for whatever reason netflix doesn't have it. That's my beef really, I hadn't looked in video stores, so that's my fault. But I was just trying to netflix it and its in my queue and it says that it's not out on DVD. hm...
|
I use netflix too, and they are way behind when it comes to older movies of that type, especially older anime like Fist of the North Star. Even with newer Asian flicks it takes awhile. Not sure if they have it now, but it has taken them forever to get Ong-Bok(SP?).
As far as them saying its not out on DVD, it probably is no longer officially distributed in the US since Criterion stopped, so technically, its not on DVD here. |

how about them redwings!?!?!?!? |
how about em!!! Kickin ass and taking names as usual. Babcock just has to keep them skating at this pace all year, and they are going to be unstoppable.

Wow, I didn't know I owned a $100-$500 DVD. It's really a fantastic movie. Nothing not to like.
|
Yeah, the Criterion DVD of The Killer was actually one of the first DVDs I ever saw become a collector's item (that and Salo). I own Hard Boiled, which I think is a much better film, but both movies are great Woo films...so much better than anything he has done in the States.
|
I have both Killler and Hard Boiled on DVD and I much prefer Hard Boiled, both are excellent films.
|
The Killer and Hard Boiled are both excellent gun fu movies. If anybody here has seen City on Fire, it's interesting to note that Taratino's Reservoir Dogs is a remake of about the last third of that movie.
I have the two pack of the first two listed above. The A Better Tomorrow movies are also very good, sorta the Hong Kong version of The Godfather. Gilda |
I've got a 2-pack with the A Better Tomorrow movies - good stuff. I've been working on finding copies of the others. I've especially wanted to see City on Fire as I've heard so many good things about it.
