Project Greenlight: Season 3

Anyone else watching this show on Bravo? I can't get enough to this show, watching the creation of this film as it resembles a train wreck in slow motion.

Okay, I'm being too hard on the project. But it is really fascinating to see the development process of the film industry. Now whether this is the exception or the rule as the way things happen in the industry, I don't know. But it is fascinating, nonetheless.

Nikilidstrom 04-04-2005 02:33 PM

I've watched all 3 of these so far, and I'm happy to see that they are doing a horror movie this time. The last 2 were character dramas, and while the process was fun to watch, the finished product left something to be desired.

I personally think that they picked the wrong director for the project. Gulager is not only a pain in the ass, but his style just doen't seem to fit the monster movie genre. I think he would be much better at psychological horror.

It was cool to find out his dad, Clu, was a main (living) character in Return of the Living Dead. That is one of my favorite zombie flics.

I can't believe I missed the start. What days and times?

GREAT series! :)

FngKestrel 04-04-2005 03:35 PM

I think the new episodes air on Thursdays at 10PM. I usually end up catching it on the weekends though.

Yeah, and Gulager may have had a pretty good short film, but his inability to articulate and assert his ideas is really hurting the project.

As for a good scary movie within the parameters of their budget...that's an incredible hurdle.

MEAD 04-04-2005 03:41 PM

I loathe that director. He looks like and upside down fishing bobber. I'm only taking shots as his appearance because I feel it would take too long to detail all of his personality flaws.

Nikilidstrom 04-04-2005 06:02 PM

Here the new episodes are on at 8pm Eastern on Tuesdays, unless they changed it since last week.

As far as Gulager, I just can't believe he can't get it in his head that he is lucky as hell to be in his position, and successful directors have been fired from projects for less then he has done. I thought for sure after he threw his big stink about casting his family, that they would fire him and pick up that younger director who nailed the interview. That would probably open up their budget a tad too.

Edit: Sorry, looks like they did move it from Tuesdays, but I'm not sure if it is Thursdays or not.

FngKestrel 04-04-2005 06:23 PM

Exactly. I mean, who in the industry is going to stand for a director of a project 9 weeks before shooting that wants to film a scene with his chosen cast members and then fly out to the execs in order to make an impassioned plea for casting? That's wasting time and money, neither of which this project has in any great supply.

guthmund 04-04-2005 10:26 PM

I watch it from time to time when I find it on Bravo.

It's certainly interesting and I kind of like Gulager. I usually turn the channel when Chris Moore makes an appearance. For some reason, I just don't like him too much.

SitizenVZ 04-05-2005 01:01 PM

I'm just hoping Gulager get's his shit together in the next episode or two, right now it's painful to watch. The director choice might have been alittle off, but it seemed like they really didn't have a whole lot of choice after the way Dimension delt with "deciding on" the Script.

Gulager seems like a bad choice, but alot of the things that are going wrong now were anticipated by Damon and Wes Craven in the first episode. Let's just pray they start filming soon so we don't have to watch Gulager try and cope w/ an office enviornment he's woefully unprepared for.

Nikilidstrom 04-05-2005 01:48 PM

A monster movie with a million cast members was definitely not a good choice for the budget conscious. Unfortunately, when you look at the other craptacular horror movies that have come outta Dimension in the past, their insistance on a run of the mill script shouldn't suprise anyone.

The teaser for this coming week's episode shows him butting heads with the casting director. But I suppose that's no surprise considering how much he's been insisting on his casting choices.

HAL3000 04-06-2005 09:15 AM

So the current director is even worse than whiney boys Kyle and Ephram from last season?

Ought to be interesting... I'm bummed that I missed the start. Will be watching from here on out.

Nikilidstrom 04-06-2005 12:52 PM

He is worse, at least during pre-production. Hopefully he'll show up strong when shooting starts.

FngKestrel 04-14-2005 11:31 PM

Did anyone catch the last week's episode? April 7th? I missed it last week and all the potential reruns. I saw a commercial and see that Gulager is still there, so he must not have pissed off the execs too much.

I missed today's too, but I'll try to catch it this weekend.

Nikilidstrom 04-16-2005 01:13 PM

Gulager is still there, and still adding to the list of people he is pissing off. I don't think anyone really cares how the movie turns out anymore, they just plan on making their money from the advertising slots that a reality show with loads of incompitence and drama sells. If they did care at all, they would have tossed Gulager on his ass the moment he went special ed during the interview process.

example:
Movie Exec - "So, Gulager, how do you envision the mood of this movie?"
Gulager - "Look what I can do!" (makes water dripping sound with his mouth)

Movie Exec - "What do you think the role and look of the monster should be?"
Gulager - "My friend made me a picture. It's red and scary."

exaggerations, but a valid point all the same.

 They may be exaggerations, but not by much. Remember, Matt Damon did push for this guy.

I saw this past weeks episode. That was interesting. The fact that Gulager and the DP can't get along, that's a real problem. I understand Gulager's desire to want to block the shot after things are on set, but he needs to make mockups in his spare time and experiment on his own time and not on the time of the studio's.

The main reason Damon was leaning towards him seemed to be because the studio gave them ZERO choice in regards to the script. They should have just went back to Miramax the moment they realized that they wouldn't have much if any control. The studio seems to be pushing them around alot and really limiting what's possible.

There is some hope though, most of the comments about the actual movie seem to be positive. Those production guys were saying all the shots look great, once they are actually done. It's the actual process of filming it that's fubared.

Nikilidstrom 04-18-2005 01:57 PM

From the acting I have seen so far while shooting, they are going to have to catch that Evil Dead vibe right on the money, or Feast is going to be too campy even for Roger Corman fans.

Silverbrain 04-22-2005 12:51 PM

I've been watching this show from the start and really like it. Its always interesting to see the background of what goes on in a movie. Seeing the credits of hundreds of people on screen, then watching this show you really see how and why so many have to be involved.

Gulager was the wrong choice imo, the first interviewed was the right guy, lots of energy. The drama is getting good, and it's interesting to see if Gulager will make it to the end of the show and still be collecting a paycheck.

FngKestrel 04-22-2005 02:10 PM

I missed last night's, but with the way Clu was going off, it should be interesting. Will catch it this weekend.

dougiefresh 04-23-2005 02:25 PM

Unfortunately, this has got to be the last season of this show. Watching a movie get fucked up in the process is entertaining, but there's no way they'll get cleared to do another one. Its almost like there's the ulterior motive of making sure new people don't get into the business because look how much they fuck it up!

SitizenVZ 04-24-2005 09:28 PM

Everytime I watch an episode I just come away depressed. Hopefully the movie turns out decent, but they just seem to be setting us up for a dissapointment. Every episode ends on a sour note. I wish I could just go see it and know whether it worked out in the end ... then go watch all the bullshit that went into making it. At least then you'd know whether or not you're supposed to care about the guy they are slowly destroying.

FngKestrel 04-25-2005 12:31 AM

Just finished watching this weeks episode. Gulager seems to be coming into his own, but I think people are just so wary after their initial impression of him.

I have hope for the film, after seeing the scene with Judah Friedlander freaking out.

Silverbrain 04-29-2005 12:59 PM

It did seem to come together at the end of principle, although good editing on the part of Bravo can easily make it out to be anything they wanted to...hard to tell. How does a director come into his own in 10 days? I look forward to seeing the final product.

FngKestrel 05-04-2005 11:22 PM

Just got done watching episode 307. Gulager looks like he's doing okay. Part of the growing pains of learning what it's like to direct in a full-fledged film. I suppose most directors become ADs and second unit directors before getting the top position, and in doing so, get a chance to learn what works and what doesn't when the money's tight.

Who knows, maybe Gulager's career will take off after this.

SitizenVZ 05-05-2005 07:04 PM

There is hope!!! I really want to go see this thing. That Andrew guy from Dimension seemed to have no faith in it whatsoever intially and even he seemed to be happy with it in the latest episode.

FngKestrel 05-07-2005 03:17 PM

Caught Episode 308 the other day. It's amazing that it actually got to a point of finality with how rocky it seemed. Granted though, it probably wasn't as bad as the producers of the tv show made it appear to be. Last episode is 309, next week. Has anyone seen anything about the movie itself?

SitizenVZ 05-20-2005 12:36 AM

How did it end?

FngKestrel 05-20-2005 09:15 AM

You know, I missed the last episode. :( I'm hoping Bravo will rerun the series one weekend.

SitizenVZ 05-20-2005 10:56 PM

Same here. =(
