Shows from your youth
I'm sitting at home, watching TV at 3am. Im watching the a-team, the cosby show, and bosom buddies. Bosom Buddies is before my time, but I didnt realize back in the day how bad the A-Team and the Cosby Show were. What shows held up? What shows stunk? I think the show that held up the best, and still will, was Cheers, and the most disappointing was Night Court.
|
I remember the show Swans Crossing, does anyone remember that show? I believe Sarah Michelle Gellar played a role in there. I liked it a lot and it was showing I believe in 1991-1992. Yea, but Cheers was hot, I'd still watch it.
|
Family Ties and Perfect Strangers.....I would NEVER miss an episode of either of those
Perect Strangers came on, on friday nites and I was 17....I worked at Service Merchandise in the electronics dept and if I had to work that nite ALL the TV's were tuned to that channel so I could see Balki  |
Buck Rogers, Battlestar Galatica, Kolchak: The Night Stalker, Project Blue Book, The Muppet Show, Star Trek,
just to name a few that still as a big following today. |
anyone remember The Adventures of Beans Baxter? That must have run for only a year or so when I was growing up, but I still remember it as being somewhat, hmmm....good probably doesn't quite cut it, but it wasn't BAD...
|
Oh goodness - Bosom Buddies -- look how far Tom Hanks has come -- who knew he'd have won an Oscar from his performance in that series. :)
Let's step into the wayback machine for a moment -- the ABC Friday Night Lineup. The Brady Bunch (yup, it was a primetime series), The Partridge Family, and I beleive Love American Style. Playing the Love Boat drinking game in college, followed by Fantasy Island, pure trash. Mork and Mindy I think held up really well, Robin Williams was funny then he's still funny. anyone remember when tv stations signed off for the night? In the good old days before reruns and infomercials... |
Man from Atlantis
Six Million Dollar Man Kroft Superstars (Electra Woman and Dyna Girl, Doctor Shinker, Sigmund and the Sea Monsters) Hong Kong Phooey Laff-a-lympics (all the Hanna Barbara characters in wacky Olympic sports... Scoobie Doobies vs. Yogi Bear's team vs. Bad Guys... what were the team names) Falcon and DynoMutt Secret Railroad... some animated French series with an English dub where this kid has a train station in his closet that he rides to another world... the girl with the star shaped hair is always there to meet him (Lisa Simpson totally stole her hair style). |
Quote:
Let's not forget the Banana Splits, with Danger Inland and the Three Muskteers. Man, a slew of names just came flooding back. thanks Charlatan for jogging my memory. |
Saturday morning... Before going out to play.. parked in front of the telly
Land of the Lost, Holly and her pigtails and the Sleestaks I probably learned more from Schoolhouse Rock than I did from actual school, (the only way I know the preamble to the constitution is to sing it :) American Bandstand. OOOH OOOH OOOH -- Shaazam and Isis.. :) |
If we're talking prime-time shows I remember as a child - like 5 or 6 - then Emergency! was my absolute favorite. Followed by The Six Million Dollar Man, The Incredible Hulk, and Wonder Woman. A show that I hated then but find funny now and seems to have stood the test of time is Barney Miller.
There's a station here in Chicago called Me-TV that on Jan. 1 started showing lots of old shows, kind of like what TVLand used to be. Sunday Nights at 9 is Alfred Hitchcock presents and at 10 is Twilight Zone. Sunday night has become my new "Must See TV". Every night at 8 is Mary Tyler Moore and at 8:30 is Bob Newhart, 2 shows I never saw as a kid but am picking up now and really enjoying. |
Icer... Wonder Buggy... Schlep! I knew I was forgetting one of them...
I also seem to remember the "host" of the Kroft Superstars were some sort of KISS like band... do you remember this too? oh yeah... Superfriends! Wonder Twins Powers Activate! |

|
lets not forget Land of the Lost, Big Foot and Wildboy, and H.R puff and stuff WITCHIPOOOOO
Shazam! oh and george of the jungle, tom slick and super chicken Captain CAAAAAVEMAN |

I really enjoyed Small Wonder as a kid. Harry and the Hendersons and Alf were also some of my favorites.
|
Hey! The Cosby Show was good!
The Dukes of Hazzard is one show that I've seen and I can't believe I watched and liked. Little black kid in Texas getting all giddy and pretending my dad's car was the General Lee and wanting to paint a rebel flag on the roof. Oh and All in the Family and the Jeffersons...can't believe they showed characters acting that racist on tv. |
Hey Dude, Salute Your Shorts, Legends of the Hidden Temple all great shows that made my growing up a little better, they are still great to watch now, but more for a laugh to see how bad the actually were
|
This might make some of you feel old...
Fresh Prince of Bel Air In Living Colors Saved by the Bells Good shows, good times. |

The Twilight Zone
Outer Limits Leave it to Beaver Star Trek Rocky and Bullwinkle I Spy - I watched some of these recently and can't believe how bad it was. |
Speaking of Shazam... what about Isis?
I AM ISIS!!!! (thunderclap here) The Lost Saucer with Jim Neighbours and Ruth Buzzy as aliens... Baggy Pants and the NitWits... |
Inspector Gadget
Thundercats Power Rangers (they're older than you think) Smurfs Carebears Bobby's World X-Men Friends (scary) Simpsons Star Trek: The Next Generation The Cosby Show Animaniacs Ducktales The Mickey Mouse Show Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ghostbusters |
I liked Scarecrow and Mrs. King, the Equalizer, Spencer for Hire, the A-team and Airwolf when I was a kid. I'm not sure that any of them hold up today.
|
Oh! Just thought of some old Nickelodeon joints I used to watch as a wee child.
You can't do that on Television. Barfs...I dunno... That was one twisted TV show now that I think about it. Double Dare Danger Mouse Banana Man Oh and Good Times! DAMN DAMN DAMN!!!! |
I can't believe no one here has menionted Knight Rider yet... not to mention MacGuyver....
http://glasspipes.imghost.org/15000/...npic2_big_.jpg Both still rock, but in a good-bad sort of way. |

Liquid Television anyone? http://www.toonarific.com/pics_root/...visionlogo.jpg Asta!! |
The show that I consistently hope to see in syndication is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which I believe may in fact be the best children's cartoon ever created. I'd also like to see Captain Planet again. Shows from my youth (youth in my case being probably 12-) that stunk I don't remember that well, but one that sticks out in my mind is Degrassi High. God I hate that show, and all incarnations of it thereafter.
|
Nobody mentioned Fat Albert! *grins* I wasn't allowed to watch television, but on Saturday morning, if it was on PBS or "educational" we were allowed to watch for a couple of hours during the hottest part of the day, while we weren't outside.....
So my line up included Sesame Street (and yes, I'll still watch it now if I catch it on... I LOVE Snuffalumpagus. *grins), Reading Rainbow, 3-2-1 Contact, Electric Company, Saturday morning book-to-short films (Not the After School special, though we sometimes could watch those, no these were short books that were made into hour long films, I forget the name of the show).... I used to sneak up late at night and watch tv in the kitchen after everyone went to bed..... Friday Night Videos! heheh..... and Up All Night with Gilbert Godfried, before Rhonda Shearer. And Maleficient.... You're not the only one who sings the preamble to the Constitution. *grins* There's a cd out of remakes by bands of all the Saturday Morning cartoon theme songs AND one of the Schoolhouse Rocks songs. I bought them both, and they're two of my favorite cds to pop in the player when I need fun music to clean or cook to. heheh. |
I thought airwolf was really cool as a kid. But I don't think it did very well. In fact I think I'll go look it up on ebay or something. That would be a great blast to the past. Probably stinks in this day and age though.

It seems like I've answered this before, but I was hooked on The Beatles cartoon and The Banana Splits. One of the shorts featured in Banana Splits was "Danger Island," and the lead character used to say, "Uh oh, Chongo." For some reason, I still say this phrase a lot to this day. |
Quote:
Chongo?? I thought his name was Tongo?? How about the Mighty Orbots, Robotech, The Bionic Six, and The Galaxy Rangers? |
warrrreagl... I remembered the reverb but not Oh Mighty Isis... but I just Googled it and you are right...
This thread is dredging up all kinds of stuff from my childhood... Kids Are People Too The Bay City Rollers Show (if was more stuff from Sid and Marty Krofft) ICER... it wasn't the Bugaloos... I just looked it up. It was Kaptain Kool and the Kongs... they were the hosts of The Krofft Supershow that featured: Electra Woman and Dyna Girl, Dr. Shrinker and Wonderbug and some epoisodes of Lost Saucer... It's amazing how much live action programming there was in those days... The Great Grape Ape... Thundar the Barbarian Anyone remember the short lived live action Spiderman series? |
Quote:
How about the short lived TV series called 'Tales of the Gold Monkey'? |
Yes. Yes it was really bad. I worked at video store (many years ago) and we had a couple episodes of it on the shelf... I used to play it on the store system... It was so bad it wasn't even funny...
Tales of the Gold Monkey rings a bell... What about "Bring 'em Back Alive?"... I loved that show... |
I still have two lunchboxes from those years....
H.R. Puffinstuff and The Bugaloos.................. The Bugaloos, the Bugaloos they're in the air and everywhere..... |
I can't believe that no one has chimed in with the Monkees
|
Mask
Thundercats Transformers Silverhawks |
Ok... some of you were taking about not realizing how bad shows used to be. Let's talk The Greatest American Hero, The Fall Guy, Simon and Simon, and "V" The Final Battle.
Please tell me someone watched "V" back in the day... I thought that show was great back in the day, but if you were to watch it now... Straight Cheese! |
They started re-runing "V" the series on Space here in Canada... I agree. I like the show as a kid but, pure cheese is being polite.
|
V scared the absolute SHIT out of me as a kid. People ripping faces off didn't fly well in my world.
|
What, nobody else watched Dr Who? I was seriously addicted to that show, where else could you have the thrill of seeing Tom Baker save the universe from evil trash cans!
Good memories! :p |
Ya know Charl I think they still show that short lived Spiderman action series on Disney. I've watched it a few times. They have the old ones with the poor animation and the ones not that long ago. They started making new episodes when the movie blew up and airing them on MTV. I didn't care for the animation though.
Asta!! |
When I was a kid I loved Diff'rent Strokes, The Facts Of Life, Family Ties, Saved By The Bell and strangely enough, MASH. I think MASH is the only one I could watch right now. As for cartoons and kids shows, I loved Danger Mouse, PeeWee's Playhouse, You Can't Do That On Television, and Mr. Rogers. I still watch Mr. Rogers with my son.
And whoever mentioned Degrassi High...I'd totally forgotten about that show! We used to have to watch episodes of that in my Teen Living class in Jr high (it was a class designed to help you deal with peer pressure, find your identity, and all that kind of crap). |
Quote:
I saw a few episodes of the MTV Spiderman and thought it was pretty good. The animation was interesting... The live action spiderman was ass... |
I remember watching the old Superman show, y'know the black and white with George Reeves, and then me and my friends would tie bath towels around our necks and jump off our porch railings.
Luckily, good times and no broken bones. |
ahh...good times !
stunt dogs [i think that what it was called, not sure] nickelodeon: - welcome freshman - adv. of pete and pete - my brother and me - salute your shorts - rocko's modern life. Those are ones that i'd still enjoy now if I could watch them.... other ones like legends of the hidden temple, guts [for now, are on the nickgas station, and are so bad, yet funny. Saved by the bell is another one that comes to mind as well..... when i was a toddler/preschool; i fondly remember 'under the umbrella tree' on disney and the game shows - press your luck, lets make a deal, where in the world is carmen sandiego, debt, supermarket sweep, and a few others.. Bah, the only game shows i'll watch now are win ben stein's money [loved that when it was first-run] and jeopardy.. Now...if you want to see some of these shows, YES - THEY'RE ONLINE , although some of my faves i've had trouble finding ones in good quality, or even any. Resources: newsgroups [seems to have more popular, newer stuff] alt.binaries.multimedia.cartoons alt.binaries.multimedia alt.binaries.tvseries [some shows, like simpsons, south park, futurama, 24, have their own groups] IRC - has the rarer stuff that we're talking about in the thread. www.rewindtv.net [i dont use irc much, but that's a start] If you want to even know if the show has been released on dvd yet or its status: www.tvshowsondvd.com Feel free to add other resources to help find our beloved shows.... |
Taxi - -Reverend Jim is probably one of my favorite television characters of all time, and probably had some of the best quotes of any character on the telly. One of my personal faves... (that I've used in some variation for as long as I can remember)

I know I'm a little bit late on this thread, but I just read through it today and it got me thinking about the two first shows to come to mind when I think about my childhood. I'd say by far, my two main shows would definitely be Saved by the Bell and Boy Meets World. I'm convinced that Amy and Alan Matthews had a hand in my upbringing, as sad as that sounds.
