Cowboy Bebop Thread

I am not a huge anime fan, but Cowboy Bebop is by far my favorite.

I really encourage anyone even those who never care much for animation to give it a try. If you like a good, elaborate plot, and deep characters, you wont regret it. The series has little to do with Cowboys, its actually based in the future where they call bounty hunters 'cowboys' and thats what the main characters are.

Another thing to try is the soundtrack, which is simply amazing. Actually its like 4 cd's of very good Jazz, Blues, Pop, Rock, and other genres. The jazz is specially good.

I don't have a favorite character really, they all have good merits, and feel very human because they have deep character traits that you can pick up during the span of the series.

I know there are a bunch of TFPer's who love Cowboy Bebop, so lets make this thread big.

SEE YOU SPACE COWBOY ...

phunktastic 04-20-2003 06:08 AM

I loove Cowboy Bebop. I've been getting into it more recently. I just bought a TV card for the computer so now I don't have to worry about falling asleep before it comes on! I'm planning on recording all of the episodes, then make SVCDs out of them with menus and everything, and putting them in jewel cases and tray inserts and such.

If it all goes according to plan it'll be pretty nice :)

marco, are you planning on seeing the movie? Its supposed to come out in America pretty soon, and some friends and I are talking about taking a road trip to Chicago to see it.

Eiresol 04-20-2003 11:07 AM

Cowboy Bebop is cool, but too expensive to buy.
Out of the 26 episodes I've downloaded the first 8 and 9 is nearly done. Pretty slow on 56k.
Spike is the best imo, so laid back.

Quadraton 04-20-2003 01:48 PM

By far one of the best anime series made.

I also have to agree about the music. I'm not a big jazz fan, but in this case, the music fit so well into the story line.

BTW, it's been a while since I've seen it, but wasn't their ship called Bebop?

phunktastic 04-20-2003 05:51 PM

Quad, I think so. At least, the other day in one of the episodes they seemed to call it that.

holtmate 04-20-2003 08:12 PM

I love the series, but I am still bitter that the movie is not coming anywhere within six hours of here...I want to see the movie, but I guess I can wait for the dvd...grrrr

shinji 04-21-2003 12:53 AM

faye is my favorite. such a lonely character. in the last episode, i guess you're supposed to be sympathizing with spike, but what about faye? she's forced to trust again, she's about to get betrayed, and she realizes it.

the dub is pretty good. kinda shaky at first, but it gets better as it progresses. i always felt that megumi hayashibara is better suited for playing little girls. faye is supposed to be a woman. the english dub captures that aspect pretty well.

Eiresol 04-21-2003 11:13 AM

Havent see the dub only subs.
I don't think I could watch it dubbed now after seeing it subbed, it just wouldn't feel right.

arael 04-21-2003 11:41 AM

Spike is by far the most badass anime character ever created!

Amazon.com has all 6 discs in a box for a little less than $100 right now. Apparently it's an amazon exclusive.

Silentdreamer 04-21-2003 12:24 PM

My boyfriend is a huge anime fan...I like some it. Mostly, I like TriGun, It is sooo cool. My boyfriend recently discovered Cowboy Bebop, and he loves it. I have seen a few episodes and it is really good.

j alfred 04-21-2003 12:52 PM

bebop is the only worthwhile anime, far as im concerfned. the show has even become a part of our idiomatic expressions. we "float" eachother cigarettes and say "Spike-uh" like its going out of style

LordEden 04-21-2003 02:32 PM

Out of all of the animes I've seen so far in my life, Cowboy bepop ranks up there at the top for best everything :). The music is good enugh to stand on it's own and when combinded with the images on the anime and the action of the storyline, it makes for great TV.

Ed is my favorite, I have to say, she's my kind of girl (not in that way!) a well of intelligence below silliness and awe :). Spike is the smoothest mofo this side of venus. He FLOWS, not he is an kickass fighter, but he is so smooth I expect him to flow right out of my tv during fight sceens.

I just wish they had more episodes...... :~(

Yea, Faye's story is a real tragedy. Shes the only one who didn't "find her place" during the course of the series. Spike found it (in death), Jet always belonged on that ship, Ed & Ein found it with her father, but Faye never finds hers. :(

tiger_boy 04-26-2003 01:24 PM

yes, it is a great series... have the first 3 dvds, downloaded the movie, actually got the first dvd signed by one of the lead directors on the project. i don't know if its my favorite series, i like trigun, and well... evangelion is probably my all time favorite. its what really started me on anime...

diergray 04-26-2003 04:47 PM

Excellent series. I picked up the reedited version after renting it from blockbuster. The music really makes it. Don't care for the end of the series however.

liquid_dreams 04-29-2003 08:48 AM

Cowboy bebop.

Hey i just started watching cowboy bebop on adult swim at night and was wondering if any one else watches the show. and to see what you think about it. i think its really well done but thats just me.

stan the man 04-29-2003 09:11 AM

where can we see it

scapegoat 04-29-2003 10:38 AM

IVe seen it occastionaly , it is really well done, and ill watch it when i get a chance

Kadath 04-29-2003 09:53 PM

It's on Cartoon Network at 1AM Monday-Thursday.
Best episodes are Jupiter Jazz 1&2(tomorrow and thursday night!). Do you have a comrade?

ndw 05-04-2003 10:01 PM

very true but i still have to disagree with ya on being by far the best. i would have to say initial d is the BEST. but yea cowboy bebop was my favorite too til i watched initial d. shit cb was my fav for about 1 or 3 years i don't remember when i watch initial d so blah lol good night all

Halx 05-04-2003 10:40 PM

I resent the fact that cartoon network has bastardized this awesome series... taming it down and everything... ugh.

hilbert25 05-05-2003 12:55 AM

I just finished the series today and it was one of the best ever. I really liked the mushroom episode, but that's just because Ein's reaction is one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

cheese 05-05-2003 03:41 AM

I love bebop, had sevral threads in 3.0.

anyway series is great i own the 3 dvd set (import) its just like the US version but only 3 disks same things on them

Rodao: watch it with the spoilers man.... you gave away alot things that should be seen in the show... no worries

Macheath 05-05-2003 05:11 AM

I have heard about cowboy bebop so much thanks to the tfp. At the moment, I'm desparately looking for a video store that has it - I don't want to start watching unless I have a way of getting all the episodes.

Jesus Pimp 05-05-2003 05:35 AM

One of my favorite anime series of all time. All the characters were great. Spike and Vicious were badass. Faye was fucking hot. Yoko Kanno's music was awesome as always. Buy the box set now. It's worth it.

bondagegirl 05-05-2003 12:06 PM

Cowboy Bebop rocks!!!!! Spike is awesome, I'm completely in love with him (is is weird to have a crush on a cartoon charactrer? lol). At the end Ed and Ein don't end up going with her dad, he ends up leaving her again right? Someone said that they end up going with her dad. Any hoo I wanted to ask if anyone noticed on tri gun, that some of the voices have been Jet and Spike from Bebop? I've noticed it a couple times, and I'm just wondering if I'm going nuts.

What do you mean by this? I myself have only seen it on Cartoon Network, so is it different on DVD? How have they "bastardized" it?

holtmate 05-15-2003 09:14 AM

They've finally released the movie in my neck of the woods!!! It's opening at a local small theater Friday! I'll have to go see it soon. Yay!!!

I saw it here a couple of weeks ago...I liked it...good Bebop stuff for more than a half hour. If you liked the series you'll like the movie.

Halx 05-15-2003 10:14 AM

I seem to be a victim of trends.. I get into something, then a couple months later, the whole friggin world is crazy about the shit.

Cowboy Bebop was tamed down for the TV show - less blood, less innuendo, they even left out a few episodes.

Cartoon network is finally showing those 3 left out episodes. They were originally cut due to similiarities to 9/11.

I need to get the DVD...can someone point me to that 3 disc set that has all the episodes?

bondagegirl 05-15-2003 11:39 AM

Go to Amazon, or check out Ebay, they had a lot there last time I checked.

LuxoDave 05-15-2003 06:45 PM

The theme song is great too... Creates a great atmosphere for the show.

holtmate 05-17-2003 08:48 PM

Just saw the movie today...loved it! It was just a nearly two hour episode. Well worth the price of admission.

phunktastic 05-18-2003 01:45 PM

Halx, by "tamed down for the TV show", do you mean it was something other than a TV show at first, or do you mean they censored it a bit for the Cartoon Network version? Are the DVDs different from the show they show on Cartoon Network?

RedCometChar 05-18-2003 11:12 PM

No, it's always been a TV show. Personally, I don't think anything of importance was edited out in the Cartoon Network cuts- all I recall being gone is the occasionally uttered "shit", and a scene in Jupiter Jazz where they break down the wrong door and catch a pair of gay guys in the act. The blood still flows freely, and the stories remain uncompromised.

Eiresol 05-20-2003 07:00 PM

Bah, if you are going to reveal parts of the plot give a warning for fucks sake.
I knew about Spike, because I read it on another forum without a spoiler warning much to my disgust, and now I know about Ed too. Thanks. :(

CNX (er, Cartoon Network Xtreme) dunno if you get that in the States shows it over here (Ireland and UK). It's awfully erratic though, they don't show episodes in order, in fact they just jump all over the place.
I can't watch it though, because it's dubbed and it just feels wrong. I've seen the first 17 episodes now, and I'm really enjoying it. Too bad I know how it ends though.

you can get a three dvd set (all 26 episodes) at half.com for like $40. the quality is excellent, and it has both english and japanese audio, as well as english subtitles. You can get similar sets for other great anime as well, such as Trigun and Evangelion.

You realize that's probably a non-legit bootleg, right?

I'm just saying, that's all.

silverback 06-02-2003 10:22 PM

My son bought the dvd set and got me to watching it with him. It made me mad when spike was killed at the end, I would have liked to see them do more episodes.

Vaultboy 06-04-2003 11:59 PM

why do you people buy anime? You can get the fansubs free (until it gets officially released), at least a year before it gets worked over into DVD's and the subtitles added.

Question: Does the Bebop DVD's have "Knockin' on Heaven's door" [Bebop Movie] as well? I'm just asking, because I haven't seen any posts relating to the movie yet.

bondagegirl 06-05-2003 10:49 AM

ok there's only one movie right, well if so it had been mentioned a couple times. In the U.S. it was newly released a couple months ago... so I don't think it would be on any of our dvds yet. But if there is another movie... then I have no idea what the hell I'm talking about... (but I'm pretty sure there is only one movie.)

Nope, just the TV sessions. The movie is a separate DVD release.

ritkio 06-13-2003 06:26 AM

Cowboy Bebop

hey people i would like to voice my opinoin on how coyboy bebop is the shit and one of the best anime ever created and i do not see its stronghold on greatness slipping away. which character r u? for those that r interested, i will go on a hunt and will bring to tfp every cowboy bebop pic that is known. also i would like to know how people have coped with its awsome but short run and what other anime is fillin ur void. inuyasha and trigun r presently filling mine

GSRIDER 06-13-2003 07:13 AM

The movie "knockin on heavens door" is showing down the street. I saw a bootleg of the original and it's damn good.

Conclamo Ludus 06-13-2003 07:20 AM

I haven't watched the anime yet, but I can't wait, I started reading the Manga a couple of weeks ago and fell head-over-heels for it. Great concepts/characters and artwork. I'm really not even that much of an anime nut, but it crosses genres on so many levels.

a_divine_martyr 06-13-2003 09:31 PM

Cowboy Bebop is my second favorite anime.

InuYasha is my favorite, the story keep sme watching it.

On another note, one of the worst animes I've seen (art wise) is probably Kikaider. Good concept, bad follow-through.

meanSpleen 06-13-2003 11:01 PM

Found existing Cowboy Bebop thread. Enjoy!

DarkShatter 06-14-2003 12:26 AM

cowboy bepop is the greatest. tons of great moments.

phredgreen 06-15-2003 02:09 AM

omfg! i'm gonna die! they are bumping bebop off of the weekday adult swim schedule for lupin! i'm gonna lose trigun too, but i'll die without my bebop! hopefully this is temporary, i'll be a very unhappy boy if this continues.

jadedgrin 09-22-2003 10:19 PM

well i have to say that cowboy bebop must be called art, i see as that and nothing else,.. and since this thread is old as hell and ill probably never check it again
(just being honest) id like to chat about it so feel free to PM me and make sure to get back to you

cowlick 09-24-2003 05:30 PM

Cowboy Bebop is the sh*t. I loved it. I only wish I hadn't watched it - so I could watch it all again.
Ed was my favorite. Loved the way she talked and the silly rhymes.

Agreed 500%.

Secondly, for the love of anime in general, why are some users spoiling the entire series with replies on what happens at the end? Do you have no consideration at all for others that haven't seen the entire series? I hate it when people spoil series. It's immature.

I bought the ENTIRE DVD set as it came out, old-school style. That was a few years ago. I have all 6 DVD's which were all $33.99 as they were released. Ha ha, I literally bought each DVD as soon as I found them at stores (they used to be REALLY rare). What a most excellent series. I've watched it through a few times. Here at college my brother and I will simply pop one of the DVD's in and watch like 3 episodes at a time. I think my favorite episodes were: the one where Spike teaches that guy how to fight like a badass and how he does it; the episode where the dog Ein is introduced; and when the fungus/mold of death attacks the entire crew of the Bebop with Spike fighting it with a flamethrower used for cooking. Oh, and when they eat the mushrooms. :)

I haven't seen the movie yet. I wonder if it's any good?

-Lasereth

Sledge 09-24-2003 09:01 PM

I hate anime. I think it's ridiculous, and I think that people who think they're anime characters are ridiculous, and I do NOT dig the "cute" thing. That said, Cowboy Bebop and FLCL are the only two anime series that I enjoy by virtue of their not sucking.

Apply any storytelling rubric from another media to anime and you'll see a sloppy, unconvincing mess - lots of style and no substance to speak of. CB makes up for it with its oblique characterization, and FLCL makes up for it by being too weird and entertaining to judge.

^_^;;

lafemmefatale 09-24-2003 09:19 PM

Cowboy Bebop is by far the best series I have ever had the pleasure of watching. Everything I want to praise about it, well, someone else has done it...spike, faye's tragedy, the music, ed...

The movie though, was pale by comparison to the series I thought. It was good, but...not as good as I had hoped. Btw, I watched it in theatres, and also a downloaded subbed one. The theatre [dubbed] actually had more scenes. And by scenes i mean split second differences...they're there, I'm sure, and they're not in the original jap one. Anyone else see that?

Randerolf 09-25-2003 08:00 PM

I can't add much to the praise of this great show. Very stylish. I'm glad my friend got me into it. I'm not a big otaku, anime nerd. I dabble in different things.

Let me rasie a question though: Does Edward take away from the show?

I know comic relief is great, but she is what the other style of anime is made of: sillyness, randomness... that sort fo thing. I think some of her stuff is funny "My socks are CoooOOOool! [sounds like soemthing I'd say by myself]" Am I the only that thinks that Ed is somewhat of a stubling block?

bondagegirl 09-26-2003 01:49 PM

I agree with you SOMETIMES Randerolf. But I still think she is great. Sometimes she does make the show a little goofy, but then she does stuff that is complete genius. I think does a lot for the show. Like did you see the chess one. Where she finds and plays with the old hacker/ chess player. That was a great one. I think her character is great, but sometimes the ways they animate her are a little bit of silly anime, with the swirly eyes and rubbery limbs, etc. But I still love her!

arctic 09-27-2003 04:44 PM

I think its very very good, I have all six discs (R4).

The interviews and extras are worth watching. Shinichiro Watanabe (the director) did 1 or 2 of the shortfilms from the animatrix. If you want an overview of when anime started, the documentary on the animatrix is pretty good I think.

This is my favorite Anime. Next would follow Armitage.

I wish i could buy the whole set plus the movie.

Bounty Hunting in deep space. What could be better then that? Well Anime pr0n of course. I mean La BLue Girl is sokay. But no where near Cowboy Bebop.

Anyways, anyone else know of his other works? The animator and director?

gwr_gwir 09-30-2003 09:59 PM

lesse.. where to begin - Sledge - not all anime is as bad as you describe. Besides Cowboy Bebop and FLCL, I'd suggest Neon Genesis Evangelion as another good story-driven series. also - bondagegirl and the others who asked as to differences between the original and the Cartoon Network versions - Cartoon Network has edited the series for blood, language, and certain scenes are partially cut out. - example: when Faye is trying to find a bounty, and bursts into a man's hotel room in the search, the man is "sitting up" in bed. what you might not have noticed, however, is the impression that is still on the bed where the man is not - CN edited out the gay banging going on there. as to where to get the series - I suggest discountanimedvd.com , or ebay (if you're feeling adventurous). finally - Quadraton - as to the ship names: The main ship (owned by Jet Black) is called the Bebop. Faye's ship is the Redbird, Spike's ship is the Swordfish II, and Jet's personal ship (the yellow one that rarely comes out) is called the Hammerhead. any questions?
