Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

just read this from comingsoon.net

Quote:

"Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" by J.K. Rowling, the sixth in the best-selling series, has been scheduled for release on July 16, 2005 in the United States, Britain, Canada and Australia, it was announced today by Scholastic and Bloomsbury, her publishers. On her website, JKRowling.com, J.K. Rowling announced yesterday that she had delivered the manuscript to her publishers. You can pre-order the book at Amazon.com.

In making the joint announcement, Barbara Marcus, President of Scholastic Children's Books in the United States, and Nigel Newton, Chief Executive of Bloomsbury Publishing in Britain, said, "We are delighted to announce the publication date. J.K. Rowling has written a brilliant story that will dazzle her fans in a marvelous book that takes the series to yet greater heights. 'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince' delivers all the excitement and wonder of her best-selling previous Harry Potter novels."

In the fifth and most recent book, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," the last chapter, titled "The Second War Begins," started:

'In a brief statement Friday night, Minister of Magic Cornelius Fudge confirmed that He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named has returned to this country and is active once more.

"It is with great regret that I must confirm that the wizard styling himself Lord - well, you know who I mean - is alive among us again," said Fudge.'

"Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" takes up the story of Harry Potter's sixth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry at this point in the midst of the storm of this battle of good and evil.

The author has already said that the Half-Blood Prince is neither Harry nor Voldemort. And most importantly, the opening chapter of "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" has been brewing in J.K. Rowling's mind for 13 years.

"Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," J.K. Rowling's fifth Harry Potter book, was released on June 21, 2003, and was the fastest-selling book in history on the first weekend of its publication. All five Harry Potter books, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban," "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," as well as "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," have been number one bestsellers in the United States, Britain, and around the world.

Scholastic will publish "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" in hardcover under the Arthur A. Levine imprint with interior and cover art by Mary Grand Pre, who has illustrated the previous five books. The price will be $29.99

i cant wait to read it (cant help it im a 10 year old at heart)

Grasshopper Green 12-21-2004 04:46 PM

I can't wait to read it either, I love the Harry Potter books! I heard that she had finished on the radio this morning and it just made my day! :)

Fremen 12-21-2004 06:34 PM

w00t!!!! I LOVE this series. I went into a sort of panic mode when I finished the 5th book, which was last week, because I MUST read Harry Potter. I'll be first in line to buy it when it hits the stores. I'm not too crazy about the movies, but I go to see them anyway.

Redlemon 12-22-2004 08:52 AM

Also looking forward to it! There's a bunch of earlier TFP discussion about this book from about 5 months ago, over here: Harry Potter Six.

bravosnakeeyes 12-22-2004 08:54 AM

can't wait... i jumped on the band wagon late... so i just finished reading the last book.... my favorite book was prisoner of azkaban but was dissappointed with the movie

kurtisj 12-22-2004 09:23 AM

i wonder how long this one will be?

snowy 12-23-2004 02:04 AM

According to both JKR and her publisher it's shorter than Order of the Phoenix by a long shot. JKR said on her website:
Quote:

As a spokesperson for Bloomsbury, my UK publisher, has already said, HBP is shorter than Order of the Phoenix, and I can tell you now that it has fewer than 38 chapters.
I'm sure speculation and rumor will be rife in the months to come, thus I urge everyone to check MuggleNet, the Leaky Cauldron or JKR's own site before posting something they've heard.

quadro2000 12-23-2004 07:46 AM

I still think they should have gone with SNL's version of the title, "Harry Potter and the Astonishing Pubic Hair."

snowy 07-09-2005 12:10 AM

Six days until HBP. I'll be getting the book at midnight and reading it straight through if all goes according to plan :)

Mr.Deflok 07-09-2005 01:06 AM

Oh my gosh I'm so excited about the novel... thank god I've got the Saturday off work!

gilbert- 07-09-2005 01:17 AM

Not long now! I'm very keen for the release, although you won't find me lining up at the bookstore. I'll just read it when i get my hands on it, hopefully sooner rather than later! Anyone know wether it is longer than the others or not? As each book leading up until now seem to be longer than the previous.

ShaniFaye 07-09-2005 03:35 AM

Its 672 (U.S. edition), 608 (U.K. edition) and the deluxe edition is 704 (compared to book 5 at 870)

I am SO psyched....Dave and I plan on being at the store at midnite to get ours

djflish 07-09-2005 06:43 AM

Don't get me wrong, I'm really looking forward to reading this book. More than I have any other book.
But queueing up at midnight. Isn't that a bit excessive? Why not go to bed and pick it up in the morning?

Grasshopper Green 07-09-2005 06:58 AM

I don't know if I have to work that day or not....if I don't, I'll probably get mine at midnight. To answer your question dj....I guess it's because I'm a hardcore fan and I don't want to worry about the possibility of having to run all over town finding a copy because the place I'm going has run out. Anyone else?

spongy 07-09-2005 09:15 AM

I plan on picking my copy up Saturday morning at Costco ( a warehouse club store) for $15.99 which is even cheaper than Borders 40% off price, and if Book 5 is any indication, there should be at least 2 full pallets of books. The fifth book sold a few thousand copies the first week alone in my local Costco.

Another reason I look forward to this book so much ( besides how damned good they all are) is that the last three I have read aloud with my wife, because I couldn't wait for her to finish. That is some together time I am looking forward to as much as the book itself.

pocon1 07-09-2005 12:19 PM

nothing to say

Mr.Deflok 07-09-2005 11:55 PM

Due to timezone differences it releases here in NZ at 11:01am. I can sleep in, get the book, read up, and not worry about missing out on any Z's... unless of course it takes longer than a day to read.

Looks like its going to be cheaper here, its only going to be £7.99 (which is roughly $13). :)

ShaniFaye 07-10-2005 11:15 AM

we plan on being at the store at midnight......I havent done that since Titanic was released hehehehe

Does anyone know if HP will be available at the Canadian Costco locations, and if so, for how much? In other words, any idea on the cheapest (students salary) that I can be getting this book in Canada? Best price so far is the Amazon.ca and Chapters online prices of $24.60 (plus shipping unless I spend another $15).

wolf 07-12-2005 11:15 AM

I have it on pre-order, can't wait to read it. This is a great series. Looking forward to the discussions on the board too.

The other book I am anxiously awaiting it the 4th book in the Song of Fire and Ice series by George R.R Martin.

JustJess 07-12-2005 11:46 AM

I'm all pre-ordered, and I'm going with a friend to the midnight business... it's not that I can't wait, I just love that there's this much excitement over a book! When's the last time you saw this sort of thing for anything but a movie or concert? Besides, Scholastic is doing a promotion in SoHo Friday night - "Harry Potter Place". I'm hoping to come home with face paint and a balloon, dammit.

I love that these books appeal to such a wide range of people and ages. I just love it.

I have to agree with you here. My dad is an elementary school teacher, and he told me he had students in his classes that had NEVER read a book outside of class...until Harry Potter. You can't argue with that...kids (and adults too) reading instead of playing video games or watching TV. Yet one more reason in the huge list of reasons I love this series :)

Yeah, I gave the first three books to a friend of mine who was still in high school, but learning to read/write/speak english. I know he wasn't exactly devouring books before that! That reminds me, I need to ask him how it's goin'.

Court silences customers after 14 Harry Potter books sold too early

The book was sold to 14 people who snagged a copy of J.K. Rowlings' much anticipated "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," when it landed on shelves last Thursday at a local grocery store.

The book, officially set for release this coming Saturday, has been shrouded in secrecy and its debut has been highly orchestrated to enable everyone - readers, reviewers, even publishers - to crack it open all at once. It's the sixth in Rowling's seven-book fantasy series on the young wizard.

But the store slipped up and sold 14 copies before realizing its mistake.

"It was an inadvertent error on behalf of one of our staff," said Geoff Wilson, a spokesman for the Real Canadian Superstore. He said the books were quickly removed.

Justice Kristi Gill last Saturday ordered customers not to talk about the book, copy it, sell it or even read it before it is officially released at 12:01 a.m. July 16.

The order also compels them to return the novel to the publisher, Raincoast Book Distribution Ltd., until the official release. At that time it will be returned to them.

As an added incentive, Raincoast will include Rowling's autograph and a gift pack.

Yes, 40% off at midnight, and probably for a month or so, that's usually how long book specials last there. (I work for a Kroger owned company, so I will be purchasing my book at work ;) )

Pope disapproves of Harry Potter <- (link)

Quote:

BERLIN (Reuters) - Pope Benedict believes the Harry Potter books subtly seduce young readers and "distort Christianity in the soul" before it can develop properly, according to comments attributed to him by a German writer.

Gabriele Kuby, who has written a book called "Harry Potter - Good or Evil," which attacks J.K. Rowling's best selling series about the boy wizard, published extracts from two letters written to her by Benedict in 2003, when he was a cardinal.

Kuby, a devout Catholic, had sent him a copy of her Potter critique and he wrote to thank her, according to a passage from one of the letters published in German on her Web site.

"It is good that you enlighten people about Harry Potter, because these are subtle seductions which act unnoticed and by this deeply distort Christianity in the soul, before it can grow properly," Benedict wrote, according to the excerpt.

A Vatican official was not immediately able to comment on the remarks attributed to Benedict, who is currently on holiday in the Alps. Reuters was unable to reach Kuby by telephone.

The sixth book in the series, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," is due to be published on July 16, with millions of copies already shipped to stores around the world.

After Benedict was named Pope in April, his own writings shot to the top of the German book charts and dislodged the most recent book in the Potter series from number one.

The Vatican had previously appeared to approve of the books, saying they helped children to understand the difference between good and evil.

Kuby maintains the opposite, listing among 10 arguments against Harry Potter: "The ability of the reader to distinguish between good and evil is overridden by emotional manipulation and intellectual obfuscation."

In one of the letters, Benedict gives Kuby permission to publicize his opinion.

"Somehow your letter got buried in the large pile of name-day, birthday and Easter mail," he writes.

"Finally this pile is taken care of, so that I can gladly allow you to refer to my judgment about Harry Potter."

Vatican officials earlier this year condemned Dan Brown's Catholic conspiracy bestseller "The Da Vinci Code."

Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone in March blasted the book as an absurd distortion of history, saying it was full of cheap lies and Catholic bookstores should take it off their shelves.

Mr.Deflok 07-15-2005 09:13 PM

I've got it!!! Read about 100 pages, HUGE revelation in the second chapter (or is it...)... Starts off with a bang and then slows down a bit.

Spoiler: I love how Harry talks to Narcissa at Madam Malkin's

guthmund 07-15-2005 09:55 PM

Just got back about 20 minutes ago with my very own copy.

The party thing at the local Hastings was pretty lame, I have to say. Although the number of adults and teenagers in line for the book was really surprising. Even had some folks dressed up in their 'wizard' gear along with a fellow with a pretty convincing Hagrid costume

Gotta go....gotta read!

Cynthetiq 07-15-2005 10:09 PM

Skogafoss gets her free employee copy on Monday. Unlike last release when she worked for an executive and she was able to get multiple copies a day or two before hand. Still, I don't do hype anymore.

Here's what they had going on at the main Scholastic offices...where the employees got to frolic in the afternoon, it was open to the public at 8pm-11pm

Harry Potter Place I forgot to say NOTE that they dubbed it Harry Potter Place, and not Diagon Alley which is trademarked with rights going to Warner Bros. All because one executive gave the movie rights away to Warner Bros.

snowy 07-15-2005 11:54 PM

Got it!

LET THE READING BEGIN.

Derwood 07-16-2005 04:48 AM

I read the first one. MEH! It would have been good if I was 20 years younger. MEH, I say, MEH!

Loup 07-16-2005 07:07 AM

My girlfriend got it this morning and made this observation that Harry's scar is in between his eyes on the cover ... like Manson.
Shouldn't it be to one of the sides of his forhead? Or is that how the movie is and she has the two media mixed up?
http://www.veritaserum.com/books/boo...r-britkids.jpg

Rubyee 07-16-2005 07:51 AM

That's an interesting cover, Loup. I have never seen it.

I reserved a book two days ago. I was going to wait for the paperback to come out, because all the other ones I have are paperback. However, I did not want anyone ruining it for me by letting something slip. So I reserved it. A friend of mine reserved it two months ago and got her call, so I figured that my book was probably two or three shipments away. I drove by B&N and decided not even to try it. Then an idea struck me, and I went into the Hy-Vee (grocery store) accross the parking lot. I was in and out in five minutes with my new book, and it was only $1 more. That was smart, I told myself.

I would have liked to go to a Potterparty, but I had just seen Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and I had had enough children for the night.

Grasshopper Green 07-16-2005 07:53 AM

I've read about six chapters...oh, the bombshells that have been dropped....

Cynthetiq 07-16-2005 07:54 AM

according to Skogafoss that is the UK cover... the US cover is green and different art.

I've always liked the Bloomsbury (UK) editions vs. the cheaper Scholastic (US) editions.

snowy 07-16-2005 08:50 AM

Finished.

Excellent. Unbelievable. Jaw-dropping.

Sometimes I wonder what other thoughts are going on inside JK Rowling's head.

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming.

Pip 07-16-2005 09:06 AM

Finished too. Whoa. *stunned*

Eitherway, my gf is enjoying the book so far :)

Canada is considered part of the UK market since it's is part of the British Commonwealth. Skogafoss works with the Canadian office since she's part of the international division. Sometimes Canada gets lumped into the US market but not always.

If you can get a hold of the UK version of the book they are usually slightly different than the US version... When the first few books came out, I had brought back the UK version for the son of a colleague... the kid was in heaven and went on for hours about all the differences...

OMG can't even begin to get into the word differences from the colour, travelled, honour, etc...

skogafoss rants about those differences all the time since the UK market wants to normally change the words for only 1,000 units which is usually not profitable nor possible.

Caphreak 07-16-2005 11:27 AM

Finished in a little over 6 hours of reading time....

Yep... The middle was fairly plain, like the rest of the books, but those last 3 chapters.... WOW Definitely didnt see that coming...

Gatorade Frost 07-16-2005 12:20 PM

I'm on the first 30 pages. Just didn't pull me in like I hoped it would.

Spoiler: If Snape ends up being bad I'm going to be so pissed I won't even be able to see straight.

Fremen 07-16-2005 01:51 PM

Alright, 'fess up. You guys are top graduates of the Speedreader University, aren't you? :D

Snowy was the first to post her finish of the book, so with the power granted to me by no one in particular, I declare onesnowyowl the winner of the "Harry Potter 'NO-PRIZE' Award"!

Congratulations, Snowy! Yayyyy! :icare:

Lovin' it, so far. :)

Nimbletoe 07-17-2005 02:11 AM

Had a long work shift, but finished it. All I can do is simply echo what has already been said... wow.

Ishmal 07-17-2005 05:36 PM

i finished at 11:05pm on the 17th

can i just say whoa???

i wasn't expecting the ending!!!

that, REALLY surprised me...

GreenHell 07-17-2005 05:59 PM

my sweet, awesome grandma got me a copy of the book, and i dont wanna read it as fast as possible, i wanna make it last. but ill probably end up finishing it buy the middle to end of this week, its really good. cant wait to see what the surprises are

Gatorade Frost 07-17-2005 08:23 PM

Umm.... J.K.Rowlings can kiss my ass. And now I've got some spoilers about the book.

Spoiler: Spoiler: GOO!!!!!!!! WTF?! GOD DAMMIT MOTHER FUCKER SONUVABITCH WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THIS WORLD WHY DID HE HAVE TO DIE?!?!? THAT'S SO UNBELIEVABLY NOT COOL I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH MYSELF. HOLY ASS THAT WINS THE MOST CRAPTACULAR AWARD FOR CRAPTACULARISM EVER.

And this concludes my spoilers.

P.S. Spoiler: DAMN YOU SNAPE!

Ishmal 07-17-2005 08:39 PM

LOL.

i guess that means you finished the book Gatorade Frost???

Gatorade Frost 07-17-2005 08:56 PM

Quite possibly.

Spoiler: I'd like to think that Snape didn't know what he was signing himself up to do... And he had to follow up having to leave the castle after killing DD, but I'm sure I'm wrong and I for some reason just have too much sympathy for ole Snape. But still. Damn him.

Ishmal 07-17-2005 09:28 PM

Spoiler: yer, right up until Harry seen the dead body i was willing to give Snape the benifit of the doubt...

i expected Witherwings to be just under the Astronamy tower and to catch Dumbledore...

cause i remember from Moodys class that the death curse (i'm at work and can't spell it) is useless unless you really put your hate in2 it, or something like that. so i didn't think what Snape did was fatal!

Gatorade Frost 07-17-2005 09:36 PM

Spoiler: Oh damn - I forgot about that. That sucks even more so. Man. I liked Snape, too. I always gave him the benefit of the doubt, but nooooooo... Oh well. I'd like to find out what Snape told Dumbledore for sure that made him trust him. Because I'm pretty sure that "Oh I'm sad that I got Potty's parents dead" isn't sufficient. I'm honest to God 100% suprised that Snape ended up being evil, though. I disbelieved it the entire book.

telekinetic 07-17-2005 09:44 PM

I got myself in SOOOO much trouble over this with my sister...this is going to be a bad week.

I hadn't heard anything about the book, so I just made up the most bizarre and horrible unthinkable plot twist I could think of, and as soon as she got home with it (at 1am) I said "Oh, you got the new book...I heard the part where _____________________ was really sad..." She got really mad, and then I said "Just kidding...or am I?"

My mom thought it was so funny, she did the same thing to a couple of her friends, mentioning the same plot twist.

HOWEVER.

Having just finished the book.... Holy crap, my fake plot twist actually happens. My sister is going to think I'm an ASSHOLE, and my mom's friends are gonna be mad as well

The worst part is I can't even apologize until after she is mad at me without spoiling it completely.

This sucks.

Spoiler: My plot twist was "the part where _____ dies..." I'm not saying who because if you haven't read it you shouldn't know and if you have you know what i'm talking about

Nimbletoe 07-17-2005 09:47 PM

Spoiler: Uh, no offense to any of you that were suprised or anything, but were you honestly suprised? He took an unbreakable vow in the first chapter saying he'd look after Malfoy, and soon as I figured out that Malfoy was to kill Dumbledoor, I knew. Still, it sucks he was weakened for nothing.

Spoiler: Not surprised by it, but I still actually believe that Snape is innocent...the way Dumbledore kept saying he had concrete proof over and over, I don't think she'd just throw that much literary buildup away. IMHO, she is letting the "Oh noes, Snape is Teh Bad Guy!!....oh wait, he's on the right side after all..." go on for two books instead of just resolving it in this one

Gatorade Frost 07-17-2005 10:29 PM

Spoiler: We were suprised only in the sense that we all had faith that it wouldn't happen. We hoped that you know, Severus wasn't actually bad, and things would be fine and dandy. But it turns out that our faith was misplaced and.. well... Bad stuff happened. And right, that R.A.B. thing sucked, too. Kind of added insult to injury. Rowlings really should put out the final book ASAP instead of dragging it out for two years.

Ishmal 07-17-2005 10:30 PM

Spoiler: my main question is will there be another book???

we've always been promised 7 books for 7 years of Hogwarts...

but if Harry is not goin to school next year, does this mean it is set up to go longer than 7 books??? or was that the last?? or will there still only be one more?

i personally think JK Rowlings is setting it up so she can write as many books as she wants, following the DAs defeat of "he-who-can-not-be-named"

Gatorade Frost 07-17-2005 11:08 PM

Spoiler: Potentially. But if she doesn't kill Voldermort/Potter in the next book I'll be pretty unimpressed with her for dragging out the novels longer then 7 books like expected.

Ishmal 07-17-2005 11:40 PM

Spoiler: does anyone else reckon Loony & Nevil will join Harry & co in their leaving school next year???

or is that just me?

Oh I have no doubt.

Hm. I'd also just like to make a personal issue I've had with the last two Harry Potter books... There's not much in the way of continuity. I mean that in the sense that we start out in July (Well, this one's a week after book 5), and then we've got a scene in like November soon after, then a short break for December, then we're at the end of the year it feels like. I enjoyed reading the day to day life of Hogwarts even if it meant tacking on a hundred pages. I suppose it doesn't matter, though, since Spoiler: they're not going back to Hogwarts apparently

ShaniFaye 07-18-2005 01:04 AM

I finished at 1130 last nite...heh, I was right on both counts and have some ideas on what happened...its 530 am though and I need coffee to make the spoiler tags work right...more later

ShaniFaye 07-18-2005 01:06 AM

All I have to say is.....

Spoiler: has anyone besides me stopped to think....what if Dum had one of those horcrux (sp?) things as well? And if he DID and trusted Snape as much as he kept telling Harry..then Snape would know. He said in that final scene with Draco he could make him appear dead to Voldermort...whats to say he could do the same thing to himself? I refuse to believe Snape is bad

Just an idea
