The Dark Tower - Final Chapter

Well tomorrow's the big day. Stephen King's Dark Tower series is finally coming to an end with the last book The Dark Tower.

I hope to pick it up tomorrow as soon as it is available (maybe even tonite if I am lucky).

If anyone is interested there is an excerpt from the Dark Tower on King's site, www.stephenking.com

So discuss and speculate, and please mark your spoilers a lot of people (like me) have been waiting 15 years for this book so it would really be a shame to screw it up.

Thanks.

It'll have to go on my Christmas list and I'll make myself wait 3 months.

The book is printed and out...you might need a connection at a book store though to get your hands on it.

The DT freak in my group has already read it. Says it was good, not great, and the hype really dampened it.

I've heard pretty much a large consensus on the first 2/3rds being great. Then there's much disagreement on the quality of the last third.

I just got it from Meijers. My Walmart didn't have it yet.

Maveric, I admire your stamina! How many hours of listening is 24 CD's?

I'm about 200 pages in. I've been happy about some aspects, not so about others. Overall, it's been pretty good. Seems to be tying up pretty nicely.

good old costco, picked it up tuesday the 22nd. Tore me up in the first two pages when they said pere callahan was going to die. Knowing that the story I started when I was around 12 or 13 (1986 or so) is finally going to end is actually very sad. I have already convinced my wife that when we have a son we will name him roland.

Can you use the spoiler tag next time you reveal plot info?

I have this on hold at the local library. Can't wait to read it. I also got a flyer in the mail for the "Stephen King Library" where you get dark tower VII for $7.95 and the first six books in a set for $19.95 plus shipping and handling. I was thinking of getting this but am hesitent (sp) about joining another book club.

I'm reading "Black House" by King and Straub while I wait for it to be available at the library, and, SURPRISE!, it's all about the tower, breakers, and the Crimson King! You think King is obsessed with this story or what? In the months between SoS and DT7 I've read 3 or 4 other King novels that all had something or other to do with the Dark Tower stories (Insomnia, Black House, Hearts in Atlantis...)

For Christmas, my wife bought me the "Dark Tower Concordance," which is a brilliant book to accompany the first four volumes (through "Wizards and Glass"). Does anybody know if another concordance is planned for the final three volumes?

I have just started reading it, I'm about 25% of the way through. But I have one question:

<span class="highlight">Spoiler</span>: <span style="background-color: White; color: White;">Is that all for Randall Flagg? After all this, he plays a bit part in the final chapter and gets killed. Nicely grusome, by the way.</span>

Other than wondering about that, the book has been awesome so far.

Do you want that question answered?

All I can say, having finished the book the other day, is that the end is....<span style="background-color: White; color: White;">tragic</span>

Used the spoiler tag b/c, though I don't give away any plot elements, I do use an adjective to describe how I view the finale.

Are you kidding me???? I HATED the first 2/3's of the book! Okay thats not quite true. I thought the first 1/3rd of the book were ok, not up to DT standard but not horrible. But around page 415 and until 550ish it was pure self indulgent CRAP!

Alright I just finished the book and I'd like to correct myself.

I still hated 415-550ish, without going into spoilers it's the part in the real world that doesnt involve saving the rose.

However, again without spoilers the ending was... perfect!

So far I am up to page 400 or thereabouts, been too busy playing video games to read I guess. My thoughts so far (all major spoilers within)

Spoiler: No surprise that Eddie was killed in the attack on Blue Heaven, I am getting a little annoyed by King's style in this book. He is addressing the reader too much. Statements like: "I would have you see the Ka-Tet like this..." It's too much, takes me out of the moment.

If I had to guess I would imagine that everyone dies on the steps of the Dark Tower except for Jake.

I'll be back.
