Does anyone read or subscribe to "The New Yorker"?

For a long time I thought "The New Yorker" was a magazine for tourists travelling to New York, and just recently (last night), found out that it was in fact a magazine that covered culture, politics, and also featured submissions of both fiction and non-fiction.

This made me a little regretful that I had missed out on the magazine due to my misconceptions about what it was, but it also made me wonder if there was anyone out there that subscribed to, or read, the magazine?

I'm curious about what you think of the magazine, and if you had any comments you wanted to share about it, either positive or negative?

I will try to pick up a copy of it after class today, but would appreciate some general feedback about the magazine, and how it compares to other magazines that are of the same "genre." I am not aware of any others, so seeing a few listed would be a learning experience also.

Thanks!

I have been reading The New Yorker off and on since I was in college, having been turned on to it by my creative writing pals. I read it mostly for the fiction and poetry, but the articles are good also. During an excursion to Manhattan, I found the section on the broadway shows quite valuable. Otherwise, I wouldn't have known anything about any of the shows. Other magazines in the same "genre" that I pick up are The Atlantic Monthly and Harper's Magazine.

those are my favorite three magazines, and i read them regularly. i find them to be quite insightful, although i guess they are also considered liberal. the new yorker and atlantic monthly are somewhat expensive to subscribe.

unlike to other two, the new yorker comes out weekly, so the information is a bit more current. it also has the infamous cartoons. sidenote: although some of the info is exclusively about new york, i think their readership is actually higher in california.

alternately, the atlantic seems to have more reflective/investigative articles that are several pages long. the statistics and primary sources pages are usually interesting. i'd say this magazine is more geared toward politics, while the other two include a bit more art.

harpers compiles short blurbs information gleaned from other sources that makes for a fun read. the second half of harpers contains longer pieces similar to what you find in the other two mags.
