Best TV/Movie writer
I've been talking in the Clerks sequel thread about Kevin Smith as a director and a writer. It made me start thinking about people who write really well for the screen, both small and silver. While I love Kevin's writing and enjoy his movies, you can pretty much lock the camera down and watch the people talk, so I guess what I'm looking for when I say "best TV/movie writer" is someone who marries both the written word and the visual.
For my money, few come close to Joss Whedon. His work on Buffy, and to a lesser extent, Angel and Firefly, is second to none. Check out some of the Buffy eps on DVD to see what I mean. If it's written and directed by Joss, it's going to be damn good.
What do you think?
