Predators

I hadn't heard of this until just earlier. Looks interesting.

"Predators" Trailer 2010 new!!! on Vimeo

blktour 03-14-2010 10:31 PM

that looks decent.

I swear the last couple of years is basically "remake" central.

Charlatan 03-14-2010 10:37 PM

I love this franchise. The casting looks great and they chose a great director.

This could be very good.

Plan9 03-14-2010 10:55 PM

Well, I'm giddy.

Baraka_Guru 03-15-2010 04:40 AM

I'm in.

LordEden 03-15-2010 05:20 AM

I could be, in theory, down for this. I like RR movies and want to see what he has in store for us.

I also agree with my Alaskan Twin, this has been "remake" central for few years.

ironpham 03-15-2010 01:09 PM

Yeah, I'm pretty stoked. I'm interested in seeing what this "new breed of predator" is.

Nikilidstrom 03-16-2010 03:42 PM

The casting of Brody killed this for me, much more than it being a dreaded "remake". I can understand not trying to find another Schwarzeneggar, but to go the complete opposite direction: skinny, brooding, pretentious? Just doesn't work for me.

Maybe he dies early and painfully, and as a result of hubris. Does that sell it to you?

Charlatan 03-16-2010 04:11 PM

The thing is... our idea of the cinematic hero has changed. Arnold's days are done. Stallone's days are done. You can't really go back. Bruce Willis changed things when they made Die Hard and Matt Damon put the final nail in that coffin when they made the Bourne Identity.

Today's hero looks more like a cross between Plan 9 and Will Smith.

I blame the spike in anime imports.

Plan9 03-17-2010 04:38 AM

...the fuck? You guys kill me.

...

I miss the Arnold and Stallone days, myself. Modern action heroes are a bunch of emo pussies.

LordEden 03-17-2010 04:48 AM

Seriously, especially seeing Planster IRL, I can say that the two gentlemen on the left are correct. Times have changed, our heroes wear a different type of "costume". We have moved past the muscle-bound "supermen" that we saw in Arnold's days, people don't relate with that. The baby-boomers don't go to action movies anymore, it's the gen-Yers and the up-incoming Millennials are watching movies. Pop culture has rejected the Arnolds and love the Damons. They don't want a guy who looks like he does nothing but spend his day lifting train cars over his head, they want a "everyman". They want someone who looks like he works out, but not enough to be scary. They want him to have fear, doubts, concerns; not just yell, "GET TO THE CHOPPER!" People know they could never look like those Mr. Universes of Arnold's era, but with just enough gym work, they could be Matt Damon's build. He doesn't have to be fearless, just get the job done.

Wait until the Indie "Superhero" takes over and we have skinny fuckers running around whining about saving the bunnies and the main female lead rejects him most of the time (causing him to write bad poetry about her, which he reads on camera).

Baraka_Guru 03-17-2010 05:09 AM

Today's "superhero" archetype is the geeky Jewish kid finally getting the hot girl.

Charlatan 03-17-2010 07:21 AM

Back in the day I loved Arnold's films. I still like to watch them. But you get the hero for your time. And Arnold's time has long past.

I was Jason Bourne. I want John McLean. I want Daniel Craig.

They are increasingly human while Arnold was always just a little to super human.

This sums up my thoughts perfectly.

silent_jay 03-17-2010 09:16 AM

Topher Grace is going to be in it? Now in That 70's Show I liked him, he was awkward, funny, played a good role, but I just don't see him in anything involving Preadators.

Nikilidstrom 03-17-2010 03:19 PM

I don't watch action movies to see how people feel. I watch them to see people kick other people's asses in violent and unique ways. "Your" (not our) heroes have become whinny, ineffectual pussies who I can't wait to see get blown up like so much cannon fodder. And don't lump Willis in with that group either, as he is fully entrenched with the bad asses of the 80's and 90's, regardless of his build.

I think we missed the chance to get back to that era when Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson decided he didn't want to be type cast and started making shitty Disney movies. He is big, bad, athletic, and most of all has an enjoyable onscreen persona that pretty much single handedly saved both Walking Tall and The Rundown. I was so excited to see what would come next for him, and then the letdown of his current streak of crap hit.

And I think there is still a crowd for that type of movie and hero. The success of most of Jason Statham's action movies (The Transporters and Cranks) can only be explained by people looking for an escape from the touchy-feely-doucheyness of Bourne and the like. And by no means are those high end films, but there is no arguement that Statham is a fully testosterone fueled bad-ass mofo in those flics.

And thats why I am wishing for a hugely successful opening weekend for The Expendables. The cast list was enough to ensure my attendance, but the previews have me counting down the days until its August premier.

blahblah454 03-17-2010 03:39 PM

Wow, I am in!

And I miss the hugely ripped superstars as well. Judging by all the new movies coming out with Sam Worthington as the lead it looks like the is going to be the new Arnie.

I agree about The Rock, he should go back to making action movies. Love that guy!

Charlatan 03-17-2010 03:53 PM

Die Hard, is the film that changed it all. John McLean is the father of the modern day action hero and as much as you would like to deny it, you can't.

Prior to Die Hard, the Stallone, Arnold, Segal, etc. hereos were all invincible. They almost never ran out of bullets and they were barely scratched in their various encounters. They overcame the odds in ways that were practically superhuman.

John McLean and his bare and bloodied feet changed that. By the end of Die Hard, he is practically dead.

It's interesting that you point to Statham as a return... I'd say he is a natural part of the continuum. He's a bad ass, much more in line with McQueen and Eastwood (the grandfathers of the modern hero) than Stallone or Arnold.

You can bitch and moan about a return to the good ole days, but they are gone.

Nikilidstrom 03-18-2010 03:05 PM

Statham is as visceral and one dimensional in his action flics as they come. He doesn't play a survivor or brooding, hard boiled type ala McQueen or Eastwood. He gets oiled up and kicks 10 guys asses at once, and hooks car batteries up to his tongue, right after he's been blown up in his suped-up car. I love McQueen and Eastwood, both great dramatic actors, but action heroes they were not.

And arguing with you over Willis would just boil down to personal perception. You think you are right. I think I'm right, and I don't have the time or the energy to go back and forth over such an inane topic.

Charlatan 03-18-2010 03:50 PM

Geez... where's the fun in that?

He can be the appetizer for the Predator.

Jove 03-20-2010 02:00 PM

I hope the sequel can live up to the original and what I mean is having a bunch of people with sweet weapons shooting and eventually destroying half the jungle just because they may have seen the predator. I may need to lower my expectations for this film, but it may be a fun action film.

And I agree with everyone's statements about past and present action stars.

ironpham 03-21-2010 05:52 AM

I think you guys are missing the real attraction of this movie - new badass motherfuckin Predators.

Plan9 03-21-2010 09:38 AM

Yeah, it is about hot-hot humans-being-killed action. I just hope they don't make a zillion obvious gun mistakes. Endless magazines are okay, napalm explosions are okay... but if I see 5.56 brass falling out of a Beretta M92, I'm going to get up and leave the theater yelling "BULLSHIT!" the whole way.

IdeoFunk 03-21-2010 12:26 PM

From watching that trailer it looks like they've taken a very logical and interesting approach to throw together another Predator movie, which will be just enough of the old but not so much its yet another piece of hackneyed garbage. Aside from zombie flicks what sort of decent blockbuster action movies have there been recently? I think this will put to shame the AVPs and Terminator Salvation, as this actually looks like it will be a super badass action flick... Im in.

Bang on! It's that part in Predator that really truly captures the essence of this style of horror: Humans pimped out with massive loads of guns versus an unfathomable ancient hunter-killer......... CLASSIC!
