WEREWOLVES, ZOMBIES, VAMPIRES...! ...ninjas...?
 

It's obvious that movies have trends. Lately, it's been zombies and vampires, with a few werewolves tossed in. Frankly, it's all good. But is it overdone? Are we headed for tilt? Maybe, maybe not.

The same thing happened in the '80s with movies about ninjas. They were awesome, no matter how cheesy they were. As a kid I loved the concept of ninjas: deadly martial artists who could appear and disappear, leaving corpses and the occasional shuriken as the only evidence that they were ever there.

I've been hiding it well enough here on TFP, but I'm into ninjas just about as much as Crompsie....er..Plan9...is into his monstrous triad.

Coming out of the '80s and into the '90s to today, the idea of ninjas in movies were mainly for comedic effect. Maybe it was warranted during our hangover from those movies. But are we over it?

Enter Ninja Assassin! It's funny, just a few months ago, I was lamenting the lack of big-budget ninja action. The martial art of choice in film these days has been kung-fu. And here seemingly out of nowhere---like the ninja---my despair gets assassinated by this Joel Silver/Wachowski-brother joint.

I don't care if it sucks and gets panned by the critics. I'm totally hitting this on the big screen.

Oh, and you must've missed the memo (and it's understandable, I'm quite forgettable):

Short summary: Last living vampire (a Japanese schoolgirl, if you would believe it) must vanquish demons and other baddies using her weapon of choice: a mastery of the martial arts and her (magical?) katana blade.

Not a true ninja-vampire crossover, but pretty close. She skulks in the darkness and uses advanced fighting techinques along with fangs, I guess, to conquer villiany, but she's pretty cold herself. Best you could hope for.

Usually movies and associated pop culture trends are a couple years behind what all my friends are wearing, moding on their clothing, and meming about on the internets.
The last big thing was us all going around crashing bars as zombies. Stopped that a few years ago, and all of a sudden zombies were on the rise, peaking in the last year. Before that were some other things, but mostly pirates and steam punk right up until Pirates of the Caribbean and similar pop trends. Oh and SantaCon. My friends started that in Seattle waaaaaay before everyone else.
So by that logic, dinosaurs are about to get big... which will quickly transition into dragons and fantasy in about 4 years. I know what you're thinking (that was just done! but just trust me, these creatures are different than LotR).

The problem with ninja movies is how predictable they are... the late '70s-early '80s saw a lot of bad budget ninja flicks.

I saw the preview for this movie a few months ago, my friend has a nut waiting in his pants for this movie. He is a huge anime geek (mostly my fault) and thinks this is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I'll be going, cause well, I love ninjas.

Baraka, does that mean that you will go rogue and break away from the clan? I'm all about swearing a loud and unneeded oath to kill you for breaking the trust of the clan. Then getting all mad when the team captain doesn't let me rush off and try to find you to figure out why you did that.
