Inglourious Basterds
Besides the fact this was an awesome movie, the one thing that bugs me is I cannot for the life of me remember the name of his Italian character. Any help?
Edit - I wasn't quite clear...I meant the names of the basterds when they pose as Italians...anyone remember any of their names, specifically Brad Pitt's? Last edited by emphant; 08-23-2009 at 11:33 PM.. Reason: clarification |

It was a pretty interesting movie. Lots of unexpected humor. The previews/commercials are a bit different from what the movie is actually like. I was expecting a non-stop super bloody action movie. While there was a lot of brutal violence there wasn't anywhere near as much as i thought i was going to see. Lots of funny when they were posing as Italians.

Positives: Great Story, Great Lead Characters, Good tension
Negatives: Music didn't work at all, some supporting actors were terrible (Mike Myers, BJ Novak), QT seemed to cram some of his "style" into places it didn't work |

I'm curious, what about QTs movies don't you like? Is it the violence because I get that, I know quite a few people who can't watch his movies because of the violence, or something else?

No it's not the violence, I can handle that. I just don't get the obsession. People love him and hail him as some sort of genious, when I think his movies are mediocre at best.

Meh, Tarantino just "works" for me for some reason, like country music "works" for other people; I don't understand why, it just does. I haven't seen Basterds yet, but I'm sure I'll enjoy it when I do.

I didn't care for Pulp Fiction or Kill Bill, but this one was really good. Very funny. Brad Pitt was fucking awesome with his accent and expression.
Edit: I agree about Mike Myers. He didn't do much in the movie. I guess expecting the usual Mike Myers humor was too much.

just watched this tonight. i thought it was a little too much talking even for a tarantino movie. And im a say semi fan of the guy i like about 50% of his movies i would say. didnt care for the kill bills or death proof but i love pulp fiction.
It was funny in a lot of parts but there was too much stagnant scenes in others. i was glad i went to a premium theatre to see it having it be so long too. I think its worth seeing personally, I will probably end up buying it in blu ray and or taking a gal to see it. Also i thought the randomness of Mike Myers was pretty funny, and yeah Brad Pitt was pretty entertaining, shame he wasn't in the movie as much as you would think. |

I really don't understand the "too much talking" comments I'm hearing (not just here). That's pretty much any movie QT has ever made. I think people sometimes forget just how much of Pulp Fiction was diologue and how little was action. Watch Pulp Fiction again you'll find it was paced very similar to Inglourious Basterds.
I wonder if people were expecting another Kill Bill action-fest, and to be fair the trailers don't exactly dispel this myth. Personally though the intro (Once Upon A Time in Nazi Occupied France) scene was one of my favorite QT scenes ever Spoiler: and I loved the reason to switch to English

And maybe to me it was all the foreign languages and having to read the dialogue that made it feel longer, like a more delayed reaction. The bastards scenes with the talking i thought much more enjoyable. |

I enjoyed a lot of the movie, but there were a lot of parts I did not like at all.
I thought the dialogue scenes with the mounting/building tension were amazing. That's something I think QT does the best and is possibly where most of his talent lies. The humor was pretty good too, from Pitt's hilarity to how badass Stiglitz was. And let us not forget the awesomeness of the Bear Jew. However, probably contrary to most peoples' motivation for going to the movie, I did not enjoy some of the action sequences. The one that stands out to me the most is Spoiler: the second to last sequence, when the theater is burning down, and Donny and Ulmer are on the balcony mowing down Nazis. Now on paper, all seems fine to me; killing Nazis like cattle, though calling them cattle would be an insult to livestock. However, the way the scene was presented, and I'm not even going to try to speculate if it was intentional, it didn't seem like good ol' nazi killin, but rather it looked like a bunch of people trying to get out of a burning building getting mowed down by some Columbine kids. I think that maybe QT was going for this conflict of feeling though. He's always gone for a visceral reaction with his flicks, and this one I certainly felt. I will have to agree with Brad Pitt's closing line, which is an obvious wink to the crowd from QT, even while thinking about the parts I didn't like. "I think this might just be my masterpiece."

I feel like I need to see the movie to post in this thread, I'm just having an enormously hard time doing so after Kill Bill and Death Trap. Kill Bill (esp. part 2) and Death Trap were just...so bad...that I don't know if I can bring myself to drop $10 on another fetishistic, dialogue heavy outing from him, my appreciation for Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction notwithstanding.

I haven't seen it yet but I'm gonna go ahead and agree with the "QT is overhyped" crowd.
It's about on par with internet meme's in terms of bandwagon factor. One group says OMG QT IS OSSM! and well, people want to be in the "IN" crowd. back to your regularly scheduled lolcats/animatedgifs/leetspeek/facepalm.jpg's *clearly i'm too cool for the internet* ![]() |

I enjoyed Inglourous Basterds, personally.
It made me forget why I was home for a brief period of time, and it is a very well-made film. I loved a lot of the shots and scenes. Still need to see a few other movies on my list.

I went and saw this opening day, at the opening show at noon. I dug the movie, and really loved the opening scene. I thought parts were brilliant, and parts didn't work so well.
My favorite part of the entire thing was Spoiler: a large number of people in the theater cheered every time a nazi got brutally killed early in the film. Then, late in the movie, we got to see the nazis in their theater cheering every time an ally got killed. The mirror was so frighteningly held to the audience I was sitting with it literally made me uncomfortable to be near those people. Beautifully done.

the thing about this one is that it is the first "deep " film QT has made- and he actually succeeds at it0- notice, all the nazis, except the high ups, are presented as more complete, multi dimensional characters than the good guys- and the theater scene mentioned above, and a bunch of stuff throughout, make it a movie that draws a bunch of americans in to see a lot of nazi killing, and shows then instead a movie that highlights the inhumanity of war.... I for one was damned surprised that QT pulled that off, and a little disturbed as I Like the idea of a movie that glorifies killing nazi's

I thought the movie was absolutely brilliant. The pace worked for me and the opening of the movie starts you off on the right foot. The only part I didn't care for was the shot of the guy getting his face shot off, in the theatre.
