juno

i finally watched juno the other night, and after a couple days to think about it, i have to ask... am i the only one who thought it sucked? sucked may be a bit too harsh... but it wasn't good, just mediocre and forgettable. and incredibly overrated and should not have won an oscar?

edit: it seemed like the movie glossed over her actual pregnancy (they only made much mention of it like 3 or 4 times after she told her parents, other than the ever growing stomach), no one got upset or freaked out about her being pregnant, and it seemed like the movie was 3 or 4 stories (juna and bleaker, juno and the adoptive parents, juno and her relationship with her step mom, and juno actually going through the motions of pregnancy) that all got wrapped up at the end, but never thouroughly developed.

i did a search and didn't find a thread on the movie in this forum, so correct me if i'm wrong...

no thanks. i'm not interested in a "who should have won the oscar" conversation. i'm curious if others also think it's mediocre and overrated, or, if not, discussion on why not.

I saw it with my wife and we both loved it. I don't think it was Oscar worthy, but then again, I did enjoyed it at recommended to other parents. In my opinion it showed the whole issue from an interesting view, and knowing first hand how hard is not to be able to get pregnant, we could appreciate Juno's decision even more and relate with Jennifer's emotions. Jennifer Gardner's acting was amazing by the way.

next time you want to review a movie, I recommend using the "RATE THE LAST MOVIE YOU WATCHED" thread. instead of making a new one unless you want to have a huge discussion about it.

If you click the link "review" in my signature, you will go to that thread. I have recently reviewed this movie and gave it a rating of 3.5 out of 10.

the one thing i can definitly say positively about the movie, is that the acting was, by and large, rather good. other than michael cera, who i think could have potential as an actor, his character (and pretty much everything thing i've seen by him) seems to be a moving statue. he walks and talks, but his characters seem so muted.

ellen page was pretty good, and i loved her in hard candy, wish she would do more challenging roles.

and i thought jennifer garner and jason bateman were excellent.

i saw juno for the first time the other night.

it was a decent movie overall. not terrible, but at the same time, oscar-worthy? i'm not a professional critic and i don't watch too many movies, but something tells me that the academy wanted to reward a great story (ex-stripper writes a better than average screen play -- let's make a big deal out of it rather than reward the same ol' guys who write great material every year). not to take away anything from the achievement, as the writing was pretty clever overall ... i'm just saying that perhaps if it was just another screenwriter who wrote the script, maybe it wouldn't have won...

the acting and performances were all good, and i enjoyed the movie overall. a solid movie, but perhaps a little bit overrated, though.

the one thing i didn't really believe was just how nuanced and mature this 16 year old character was. The teens at my high school, myself included, were nowhere near as hip/mature/emotionally intelligent as Juno herself, so I found it difficult to believe that there could be a teenager with this sort of maturity.

I think the movie made the point that kids are under estimated. Personally all my life I felt like I was an 'old soul' because I was always more mature than others in my age group.

I can see how people see it as being "overrated" cause when ever you hear a big hype about something, it usually gets ruined for you. But to me, it's my favorite movie ever, from the cast to the soundtrack to the message.

I just strongly related to it because that was me in high school, that quirky awkward girl who liked 70's rock music and B rated horror movies (I still do). There's also a quote at the end about how "normalcy isn't their thing", same goes for me and my SO.

Plus, it's probably the most original "romantic comedy" I've seen in years.

I love romantic comedies - the more "artsy" the better.

And maybe it's because of that that I thought Juno sucked but I seriously thought it could've been a lot better. Just as mentioned above, there are real significant and challenging issues - real questions to ask and some pretty tough choices to address when you consider teen pregnancy.

Juno glossed over 90% of those issues in an attempt to make Juno seem much smarter and less conflicted than any person her age could ever be. They practically ripped her character straight from an episode of Daria and in the end - I barely cared for her or her situation.

Ughh.

I don't see the disconnect regarding her age to her personality and maturity. Some people are much more mature much earlier on. Look at the disposition of her parents in the movie. They aren't the overbearing type. They seem like the "live and let learn" type, which generally results in much more mature kids. My mom has a friend with a boy who is 10 or so. He's far more mature and comfortable with himself than most 20 year olds I know. By the time he's 16... he'll be much like Juno is portrayed... I'd bet on it.

At any rate, TM and I enjoyed the movie quite a bit. I thought it was sweet, funny and very well written and acted.

Yeah, I'd agree with this. I can't think of anything else off the top of my head in this genre that's come out in the last few years that was as good as Juno...

what romance? bleaker knocks her up, ditches her, asks someone else to prom, adn then juno pours her heart out to him. other than the last 10 minutes of the movie, there's no romance...

there wasnt' that much comedy to it either...
