Comic Book Heroes Unmasked

Did anyone else see this special on the History Channel? It was wonderfully done and extremely interesting. As of right now in US central time, it has 40 minutes left, but you'd be better off watching it from beginning to end. Heh, it's worth watching the whole thing just to catch the "hidden messages" in the old Wonder Women comics.

Any thoughts on the show?

i missed it but it sounds interesting

I thought it was quite well done. Lots of the background to what was going on in the real world & how that effected the comic book arts. It was a little D.C./Marvel oriented, but since those are the big boys, that was to be expected.

And yeah, the wonder woman bit was great... something I'd never thought of before

Ill add my opinion that it was a very interesting and well done show. I think they did a good job of giving recognition to the non-DC/Marvel comics.

I was just glad to see them mention Watchmen and DKR, especially Watchmen. Just don't think it get's enough recognition for the genius book that it is.

Sad to see they couldn't talk Alan Moore into being on the show, but glad to see Kevin Smith and Frank Miller. All and all, it was a great show. I'm contemplating getting it on DVD.

what was said about wonderwoman?

sweeze 06-24-2003 02:15 PM

well, wonderwoman always had herself bound up in many many issues (since binding her armbands together took away her powers). apparently nobody recognized the presence of that particular fetish .

I thought it was a pretty well done piece, at least for the parts of it that I saw (missed beginning)

I have it on my Tivo. Now I can't wait to watch it.

People today looking back on the old Wonder Woman comics noticed that there was a lot of BSDM behavior in some situations. Nothing screamed it of course, just little implications.

I never knew that comic books had been so involved in politics and social issues during the 60s and 70s. It was a really great documentry.

They mention Sandman, Spawn, anything by Dave McKean? Sorry I live in New Zealand, will have to download or buy the DVD online.

I thought it was excellent. I just stumbled on the program and they were wrapping up the WWII era books. I watched the rest and it was really well done.

MrDeflok, Giaman (sp?) was one of the interviewees, giving his opinion on all the eras and the future.

they mentioned both, did a slightly better job on sandman than on spawn, but i thought the coverage of more recent developments (image, etc... really everything after 1980) were sort of rushed over in an effort to fit into an hour tv slot.

Sounds very cool, thanks.
