The New Star Trek Cast
I've never been a huge fan, but this had me as well as others who saw it chuckling for a while.
http://tinyurl.com/3xtsc9 This version is being handled by J.J. Abrams of LOST fame, so hopefully it will turn out good, however, that cast is the most unfitting I've ever seen. |
Color me massively disappointed. I am a huge fan of star trek. I was happy that the cast of the original series was allowed (hmmm... Motion Picture, Wrath of Kahn, Search for Spock, Voyage Home, Final Frontier, Undiscovered Country, and half of Generations) 7.5 movies. Many of them... several of them were really good. I own several, even. They were given many chances to entertain and they came through. Then it was time for TNG to take over. It was good, almost too good. First Contact was arguably the best of all ST films. Then some bad stuff happened.
The point is that this is a massively stupid and moreover unfair idea. First off, no man alive can play Kirk or Spock. Sorry, game over there. Second, are we really ready to screw over DS9 and Voyager like that? Why can't we have another Generations, and this time make it TNG, DS9, and Voyager? And then let it be the last movie? |
From what I've read this will be a prequel of sorts documenting the crew's life at the Academy. However, since I'm not an expert on the ST time line, I could be wrong.

If it's good, it's good. If it sucks, it sucks. Let it do it on its own terms. |

Let's see what they can do with the material. |
Remember when they said a movie coming out about Alexander the Great would concentrate on the fact he was gay? That's the last time I gave a bad premise the benefit of the doubt. Star Trek has to earn my trust and loyalty.

Yeah, that's why I don't bother with Aintitcoolnews anymore. Those guys bitched and moaned for MONTHS about the casting of the fucking Scooby Doo movies. Good grief. What a miserable waste of emotional energy. This film sounds so far removed that I have no idea what to expect. I'm going to keep it that way and wait for it to release before judgement. You'll never enjoy a Hollywood movie if you steadily build up rigid expectations beforehand. |
With something like Batman I am far more capable of watching a movie "on its own terms." Thing is, Star Trek is a specific idea/style/universe, and it's not something people want to see "reimagined." Star Trek is what it is - as opposed to any other sci-fi show - because of Gene Roddenberry's vision. The lack of quality in the more recent Star Trek endeavors is directly related to their lack of adherence to that vision. If Paramount wants to create a sci-fi movie about 20-somethings in space, then go ahead and do it, and I'll be happy to watch it and judge it on its own terms. This is a Star Trek movie, though, and I'm not interested in it being more like some other sci-fi concept. I want to see Star Trek. And Star Trek is not about 20-somethings at the academy, "reimagining" classic sci-fi characters.
The sad thing is...I'll probably see it in the theatre anyway, and Paramount knows this. Then again, perhaps I won't. We'll see what the reception is like. Like willravel said though...this whole thing is seriously unfair to DS9 and Voyager (and, worse yet, to TNG). If nothing else, the TNG crew deserves a proper send-off. The end of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country was a really great way to say goodbye to the TOS crew...signatures in the credits and all. I want to see that same kind of respect given to the TNG crew. After all, TNG is arguably the best of the Star Trek series. |
And I have the script! And it's better than Lost.
Yes, I want to see Jean Luc and (hopefully skinny) Riker and Geordi and Worf and family in a really decent goodbye, and let's have Avery Brooks for god's sake. |
I don't like the idea of prequels in the Star Trek Universe. Prequels are limited to what can be done. You can't kill off any of the characters, You can't introduce and new gadgets or aliens we haven't already seen before without questions like where the hell were these guys when Kirk and Picard were captains!? The movie is going to have to rely on the same gimmicks that Enterprise relied on. It's going to play to the crowd that enjoys seeing the first person to use the transporter or the first time someone did warp 5.
As for the cast, I think there's some cool actors in there. Simon Peg as Scotty and Zachary Quinto(Sylar on heroes) as Spock... |
I want to see post DS9/Post voy god damnit! There are some good actors in there, but i want Star Trek, not 'omg-star trek-is so-like-back-omg!'.
I'll still go watch it though... |
I live with the motto " any Trek is better than no Trek". I would rather see a new crew with new missions. That said I will watch.

Hey, if you can get Frakes to drop back down to 180 again, more power to you. I won't watch Riker at 260, though. He's supposed to be the Indiana Jones of space. I don't mind that he's getting older. I've made my peace with that. But if I can't watch Frakes follow Shatner. I just... can't.

|
As a Trekkie, I'll watch it, regardless of cast or timeline. Here's to hoping it's worth the $4 to see it!
|
bummer. the trailer is in quicktime.
oh well. i'll probably go see it anyways. why not. seen all the other movies and own most of them. |

I don't, but I looked at the source code, downloaded the HD trailer, and watched it in VLC ;)
|
Yes, this code, but how did you bypass the quicktime security?
|
quicktime security?
oh, and as for the teaser...visually it's ok, but using Leonard Nimoy for the voiceover just struck me as a little silly and it reminded me of the things about this movie that don't sound so great. But, like a good lemming, I'll pay to see it in the theatre anyway and enjoy it well enough :p |

Spoiler: I've heard that Nimoy-Spock ends up going back in time and talks with Quinto-Spock, because some Romulan also goes back in time and wants to do something bad. (I don't remember much of the details.) If it's only Nimoy voicing over, that's a little less annoying, but having the crew of Kirk's Enterprise together in any way whatsoever still doesn't make any sense.

i don't like quicktime. had too many problems with it in the past. |

Unfortunately, it's way too late for them to use my screenplay which follows the cannon religiously and would blow everyone's minds. |
Will, if it were fact that you have written an actual screenplay for this Star Trek movie, it would give me serious concerns about your ability to treaty people psychologically...
/kidding/ Like I can judge considering I have been writing a Doctor Who episode for a year now. I will go see it just to see it. I am an overall fan of science fiction so I can't discriminate this movie as it is a Star Trek. |

Damnit, you quoted me before I realized my typing error.
Maybe. However, I have my doubts for the casting of McCoy... can he really pull off the, "For God's Sake Jim...!" I don't know... |
All he has to do is play a crotchety young goat imitating Kelly's crotchety old goat.
I just hope Kirk will go: "Spooooooooooooock...". BTW, http://www.tribute.ca/tribute_object...chris_pine.jpg + http://www.nancy.cc/wp-content/uploads/2007/02/ham.jpg = http://www.eskimo.com/~bpentium/shatner.jpg |
 That deserves to go into my friend's new math book called "Boozylogic."
/recalls the MST3K movie/ "Spooooooooock..." Wait, Shatner is a ham... so that would make ... that other guy the identity of addition- zero. |
