Van Halen reuninted...Almost

The press conference today confirmed rumors of a Roth led Van Halen reunion. The band its not 100% though as Bassist Michael Anthony has been replaced by Eddie Van Halen's son Wofgang

Quote:

LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- Rock band Van Halen has reunited with the group's original singer David Lee Roth for their first tour together in more than 20 years, they announced on Monday at a news conference.

Roth, 52, spoke virtually nonstop at the press event, promising that the band's upcoming 25-date North American trek was merely the precursor to a world tour and to a new album.

"This is not like the Police," Roth said, referring to another band that recently papered over personality differences to launch a one-off reunion tour. "The idea is that this will continue on and on and on."

"We think we got it right this time," Roth added. "You come and judge the performance harshly, please. I beg you, come on down and see."

The 25-date trek begins on September 27 in Charlotte, North Carolina, and wraps up on December 11 in the Canadian city of Calgary. Key stops include Chicago (October 16, 18), New York City (November 13) and their native Los Angeles (November 20)

But it will not exactly be a reunion of the classic lineup famed for such hits as "Panama" and "Runnin' with the Devil," because bassist Michael Anthony has been replaced by lead guitarist Eddie Van Halen's 16-year-old son, Wolfgang.

Roth heaped praise on the band's newest member, claiming Wolfgang picked the songs the band will perform, and "brings a young energy and a spirit to this that'll knock you out of your socks."

Asked about Anthony's absence, Roth said, "This is not a reunion. This is a new band. ... Usually when a band comes back like us it's rockers with walkers and this is everything but. Meet us in the future, not the past."

Roth and Van Halen were supposed to hit the road earlier this year for a reunion tour, but plans fell through when Eddie Van Halen entered rehab in March for undisclosed issues. His illness also scuttled a potential reunion at the group's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction later that month.

Roth, now 52, quit Van Halen in 1985, during the band's heyday, in hopes of attaining solo stardom. After some initial hits, those dreams crashed and Van Halen continued successfully with Sammy Hagar on vocals.

The band's luck ran out a decade later when Hagar and Van Halen acrimoniously parted ways, and a new album with a third singer tanked. Since then, both Roth and Hagar have briefly aligned with Van Halen, and the two singers even toured together, despite Roth's barely concealed enmity for Hagar.

Unfortunately, the closest they are coming to me is Charlotte (unless they add more dates) So I wont get to even think about seeing them

I'd almost make the drive to KC to see them. But the last time I saw an old band, it just wasn't the same. I'd hate to screw up what I can remember.

Tour to be canceled in 3... 2... 1...

I wonder if there's still interest out there to support such a tour. Not a band whose work wears well over time.

Anyone know why Michael Anthony isn't being included in this tour? Bad blood?

I think a lot of it has to do with him being close to Sammy and the brothers commanding 100% loyalty. From a Sammy interview I read maybe a year or so ago, he said that the brothers kicked Michael out because Michael showed up on stage with him (Sammy) at one of his concerts.

It could be Michael quit having had enough of the brothers shit and knowing they weren't creating anything new. But allowed the brothers to say he was "fired" or they knew he was walking so they came out and said "he was fired." before he had the chance to come out and say, "I quit."

Or maybe he was bopping Valerie, or he got cleaned up and sober and they didn't like it, or he decided to have a backbone and stood up to Eddie....

Don't know if we'll ever know. They have always been as dysfunctional a band as they were talented....

Either way I think it was best for Michael, I think he is the only one who probably has any true sanity left.

I'll have to agree, I saw them back in the 80's with Sammy, who I prefered over David Lee. I just cant see it being the same at all. I've changed, so I'm sure they have too. And having Wolfgang on stage with em, no Sammy or Michael Anthony, a bit strange.

Van Hagar and Alice in Chains seems kind of a weird pairing, but I guess they were trying to shoot for the younger crowd.

Dream Theater and Every Mother's Nightmare seem unevenly matched as well.

I saw them about 10 years prior to that. Somehow I just don't see myself standing behind the Tulsa Convention Center now like I did then yelling at the groupies to show me their tits.

Flipping through the channels tonight, I came across a replay of Van Halen's press conference announcing this tour on VH1. I wanted to change the channel, yet I couldn't help but watch with a feeling inside me that there had to be something I could do to make DLR stfu.

And damn I wish I had my old tic stubs.

Heard about this on Sound Opinions tonight...

Apparently Michael Anthony and Sammy Hagar are going to go on tour together as well. Pretty amusing. Anyway, I have pretty much no respect left for Eddie Van Halen and I have to agree with the SO hosts when they expressed their belief that this is all about the money.

Everybody wishes that DLR would shut the fuck up! Ha! :) :) :) I saw him on TV about ten years ago and he looked like death on a cracker. Way to much whiskey and coke, and I do believe he was snortin the whiskey and drinkin the cocaine!!(Flash Back to Pat Travers concert)

I didnt start saving my stubs till I saw Skynyrd in 88, and I saw alot of bands before that. The first concert I saw was KISS when I was 16,(1979) and I didnt even like them, but the stage show was a mind blower, especially for a first concert. Thats before MTV, before the net, and the only rock music on TV was the Midnight Special. Now thats the good ole days, not a few years ago when TFP first started......Please.

Van Halen?!? P-shawwww. Eddie and Alex can sit in a corner and rot. All the on again, off again crap wears on the fans. I can't ever see myself spending money towards VH in any way.

pan6467 08-25-2007 08:32 AM

I just saw the price of tickets and ..... um yeah, about that..... I'm afraid we'll have to let it pass. No one is worth that kind of money especially when this is a comeback tour and not promoting anything new or trying to win fans back.

I would love to have seen them, but not at those prices.

On the other hand, with the Van Halens HUGE ass egos they can say the tour flopped because no one wanted to see DLR.

Ya i hear this rumer is confirmed. I am wondering if dave is as entertaining as he was back then.
