My bodypaintings for 2009 - NSFW

I guess it's a testament to how long I've been a a member here that my nick is "bodypainter" since I haven't really painted any bodies in 6 years. Until now, that is. My wife and I are returning to Fantasy Fest this year and I have rescued my airbrushes from storage and am practicing for this year's event.

So, I am hella rusty right now. Even worse, I'm not much of an artist even when I am well practiced. Anyway, I wanted to share my efforts so far this year. My goal is to go to Key West at Halloween with a dozen paintings and accompanying costume bits that I can do without lots of effort so we can all get on with the party. Here's what I've done so far.

The models are my wife and a few of our friends. Much thanks to them for being so patient with me. :)

A scene oft-repeated the last few weeks!

These next couple paintings will look a lot better when we've got the wig and face makeup that goes with.

A just for fun painting.

Experimenting with airbrush makeup instead of paint.

I gotta work more on this concept.

Another just for fun painting.

Your basic sunset scene.

That's it for now, but probably more tomorrow and periodically through the end of October!

Love the stars. Thanks for sharing.

Meditrina 09-19-2009 06:34 PM

Those are so cool. I really like the one with the stars.

Jetée 09-19-2009 06:38 PM

The "concept" one was funny; I was wondering what you were going for there as well.

How long, on average, do you take to complete your body-painting?
I've heard of others in the body-painting industry as having to work continuously alongside the model for upwards of 6-8 hours, but I'm guessing that depends upon the exact intracacies and type of paint finish (top-grade) they typically use. It'd be more personal to know how much time and effort you expend, in comparison.

DaniGirl 09-19-2009 07:40 PM

Wow you are very talented. I really like the last photo. Thanks for sharing!

powerclown 09-20-2009 05:26 AM

Wow...cool and unique. I like the red one.

I'm trying to spend no more than an hour on each one, including drying time between colors. In competitions and photo shoots I'm sure the artists spend many hours on a painting, but we're going to Fantasy Fest to party and I don't want it to turn into a job.

thirdsun 09-21-2009 05:49 AM

Cool. Ah, so the name bodypainter is actually titular, I see....nice work!

dlish 09-21-2009 07:30 AM

another 2 thumbs up for the stars job

great stuff bodypainter. i'd love to see more!

bodypainter 09-26-2009 04:37 PM

Update time!

I didn't really like this one, but it was good practice.
http://oldweakandpathetic.com/galler...2/DSC_0962.jpg

We had a professional airbrush artist over today to give me some tips. We painted side by side for several hours and here are the results.

Me painting my wife.
http://oldweakandpathetic.com/galler...2/DSC_1031.jpg

Finished. I was happy with most of my work (on the left) but not happy with my tree (which is hard to see in this pic). I need to work on details like that.
http://oldweakandpathetic.com/galler...2/DSC_1065.jpg

Next up, a neighbor that lives down the street and her friend. I was more happy with my work this time (on the left) but still need a more natural touch.
http://oldweakandpathetic.com/galler...2/DSC_1067.jpg

I got a big kick out of these two walking home, about 4 houses down the street, in their paint. :)

Last up, a starfield scene.

The girls admire their paint one more time before washing it off yet again.

More to come!

Xerxys 09-26-2009 06:21 PM

These are really good.

Jetée 09-26-2009 06:26 PM

Lost..in..Space!

I love it. Rippling universes, shining stars, and big moons.

Grasshopper Green 09-26-2009 07:07 PM

Wow. Those are awesome. I like them all but really love the beach ones.

little_tippler 09-26-2009 07:14 PM

great work, love the spacescapes! I have always wanted to do body art like this...I can see your skills being perfected in each set. Looking forward to more :)

bodypainter 09-27-2009 03:00 PM

Today I practiced a couple of yesterday's paintings by putting the designs on my Mac Planters. Pics!

Start with a few splotches of color.

Brush in some details.

And finish it up.

Back in service.
http://techquarium.com/gallery2z/d/31858-2/DSC_1171.jpg

That was fun, so I tried it again. Here's the end result.

Then to top off the day, we did a little role reversal and I walked the girls through painting me!

I think they did a terrific job for their first try.

blahblah454 09-28-2009 07:38 PM

Wow those are really good!

Tully Mars 09-29-2009 02:17 PM

Looks damn good to me. Certainly looks as good as any other work I've seen at FF. Have a great time! Wish I were going this year, hopefully next.

bodypainter 09-29-2009 03:21 PM

Thanks everyone!

Here is today's work. Again we are working on practice for the girls. Today, I painted Dianne, Dianne painted Dorleen, and Dorleen painted me. I sort of made this design up as we went along, and my little War Of The Worlds alien ships didn't work very well, but overall it was great practice and looked pretty good.
http://oldweakandpathetic.com/galler...2/DSC_1193.jpg

As an added bonus, here are a couple pics from a few days ago. Not a very good painting day, but we had a lot of fun.
http://oldweakandpathetic.com/galler...2/DSC_0986.jpg

And if you're wondering how we get this paint off, this is how. :)
http://oldweakandpathetic.com/galler...2/DSC_1003.jpg

That's all for today, more to come!

bodypainter 10-11-2009 11:29 AM

Update time. Fewer pictures now that I'm mostly re-painting stuff I've done earlier. We are nailing down the Key West portfolio. Here are some from the last couple weekends.

http://oldweakandpathetic.com/galler...2/DSC_1274.jpg

http://oldweakandpathetic.com/galler...2/DSC_1254.jpg

Dianne continues to practice. It's going to be very different this year because I'll be painted many days as well.
http://oldweakandpathetic.com/galler...2/DSC_1263.jpg

This one frustrates me to no end. The next (and final!) time I practice this I am going to delete the hole + laces effect completely. I just can't make it look like I want it to look.

Pants Rocket v2
http://oldweakandpathetic.com/galler...2/DSC_1288.jpg

Which brings us to today. Today I am playing with lace and this was the first result.
http://oldweakandpathetic.com/galler...2/DSC_1297.jpg

Our neighbor Michelle stopped by early this afternoon to give Dianne a break from modeling.

Black base with white lace later painted blue. The lavender paint in the chest area was a failed experiment. Wouldn't do that again.
http://oldweakandpathetic.com/galler...2/DSC_1298.jpg

White base with blue lace and the white later painted gold.
http://oldweakandpathetic.com/galler...2/DSC_1304.jpg

Both white and black base work well. Both use a lot of paint but go on really fast. These took about 1/2 hour each. At Fantasy Fest I'll be painting the back also so add another 10 minutes and that's a fast paint job.

Any opinions on the color combos for the lace, particularly the white versus black base are welcomed.

Redlemon 10-12-2009 04:55 AM

Are you spraying through actual lace to achieve that effect? Also, what would it look like without a base coat behind it (black/flesh)?

bodypainter 10-12-2009 01:50 PM

Yes, spraying directly through the lace. I tried it without a base color and the results were poor. The background color is what actually becomes the lace because the stencil is a positive (where one would want a negative).

The best result I've ever seen was with a white background topped with a flesh color. That make the paint look very much like white lace and only white lace. I may play a bit and see if I can mix something that's close enough to achieve that effect myself.

Anormalguy 10-13-2009 04:48 AM

Wow, those are cool, I especially like the lace.

bodypainter 10-13-2009 04:24 PM

We did a couple more lace practice runs tonight, holding ourselves to just red and white. Here is a a white base with red on top.
http://oldweakandpathetic.com/galler...2/DSC_1310.jpg

And the reverse with a red base and white on top.
http://oldweakandpathetic.com/galler...2/DSC_1316.jpg

I remain impressed with how fast and easy the lace stencil thing is.
