My daughter's stuff.

Every once in a while I have to come around and brag about my daughters' artwork. Usually it's my oldest daughter, but her younger sister is very good, too. She has this furry character she has been developing for years she calls Kera. People pay her to draw pictures of this character on spec - yay the internet, 'cause she needs the money, lol.

She made this poster to show the progression over time. I thought it was clever.

...and this is one of the latest pieces that she has done.

I'm not a huge fan of this genre of art and she knows that - we have an understanding - I'm just too old, I guess. But I can recognize that she does fabulous work, my little girl. :p

lostgirl 02-20-2009 01:34 PM

I'll say, these is very well done. She is a talented artist!

ratbastid 02-20-2009 01:43 PM

Wow, well I am a BIG fan of this kind of art (usually not furries, but for sure comics) and I've got to say, she's as talented as any professional artist in the market. She really ought to be getting her stuff in front of comics editors, could be a very real career option for her.

At the very least, I can see Kera as a webcomic character.

ring 02-20-2009 01:59 PM

Thanks for sharing these well done pieces.
She has given Kera genuine personality.

Nice.

Esoteric 02-20-2009 02:29 PM

The progression from 2005 to now is incredible. She's very talented and I second ratbastid about this being a serious career option. Thanks for sharing mixedmedia. :]

mixedmedia 02-20-2009 02:42 PM

I know, but to her it is a hobby and something to do for a little money on the side. Currently she is studying to be a veterinary technician - she loves animals and that is the direction she has decided to follow for now...but she's only 20, you never know...she has changed her mind about what she wants to do three times since her senior year in high school, lol.

pig 02-20-2009 03:06 PM

First of all, I'm SOOO glad this isn't what I thought it might be when I first read the OP title on the "New Posts" button...:)

Second...I'm umm..second or third the praise. Very nicely done. I wish I had more visual art talent, but alas I was shortchanged. You never know when a hobby might become a career, but I think it's smart to get a degree / career direction that can pay the bills if it doesn't work out. Neat stuff.

I love saying neat.

Cynthetiq 02-20-2009 03:10 PM

pig... i thought the same thing, but realized it was from mix and my concerns went away.

:) very cool, well done. bravo!

mixedmedia 02-20-2009 03:13 PM

lol, my daughter's stuff.
ew. ;)

YES. I wholeheartedly agree. Your daughter is amazingly talented, mixedmedia, and she should pursue this talent--someday! Even if it's not what she wants to do now, she should keep honing her skills.

Thanks for sharing this with us. It's very cool stuff. I'm happy to know she has a supportive mother in you :)

Charlatan 02-22-2009 04:24 AM

I see the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

mixedmedia 02-22-2009 05:13 AM

Well, I will assume you are referring to her interest in all things seksy, because I certainly don't share the talent that her and her sister have. I'm quite awed (and thrilled) by it. :)

Jove 02-22-2009 07:13 AM

Impressive detail in all the pictures. And what characters are on the last picture, that are on the red drapes? Does she speak the language?

mixedmedia 02-22-2009 07:24 AM

Frankly, I don't know. Knowing her she looked them up...she's a stickler for those sorts of things. I will ask her.

dlish 02-22-2009 08:27 AM

wow..just wow!

mother AND daughter have talent!

Fly 02-22-2009 08:48 AM

did she by chance use you mixed as her inspiration for the character?

777 02-22-2009 11:08 AM

Hey MM, is this the same daugther that also drew the pin up art with the squid-faced monster?

mixedmedia 02-22-2009 11:38 AM

fly, lol, no. But pretty much everyone here knows what a fan I am of old pin-up art and exposure to it has influenced the work of both of my daughters in different ways.

no, 777, that was my oldest daughter...she is still drawing fabulous stuff, too. :)

blktour 03-10-2009 12:41 PM

Wow! jaw dropping.

I cant even draw good stick figures.

hunnychile 03-10-2009 12:47 PM

Your daughters work is wonderful! But even better is the fact that she has a "medical mind" and wants to be a Vet! How fantastic. She can do both and have a terrific life. It's my understanding that vets are harder to become than MDs. And she must be quite smart and well studied to go forward on that path to become a vet. Please keep us posted and kudos you two! What a great family you are!!! Best of luck.

World's King 03-10-2009 01:02 PM

Wow... She is really good.

ShaniFaye 03-10-2009 01:24 PM

those are awesome....she's a lot like my daughter but older, she wants to do the vet thing but she sits and draws anime stuff all day long. I got her a tablet for christmas and her drawings have improved greatly. I wont hijack your thread lol just wanted to say your daughter is very talented

Actually, she is only studying to be a veterinary assistant at the moment. She will be done in December. She's on the fence about going the whole veterinary medicine route. Maybe later on.

And thanks. :)

Shani, thank you and please, you can gush about your daughter here all you want. I understand. :)

Kid_Karysma 03-10-2009 03:59 PM

Wow, when I clicked this open, I thought it would be people's crappy little drawings. This is amazing. I love that progression piece. It really shows how much practice it takes to be a great artist.

little_tippler 03-11-2009 02:00 AM

really, with this kind of talent, she's not doing it professionally? I don't get it.

Awesome stuff mm, you should be very proud!

mixedmedia 03-11-2009 02:22 AM

Well, I think she just enjoys it and doesn't want it to turn into work. But like I said earlier, she does make some money off of drawing commissions. She's only 20, you never know what will happen. :)

Both of my daughters could be professional artists, though, some sort of freak of nature that they turned out to be my kids, lol. Their father is very creative and can draw, but not like them. Can't say I don't love it, though! They do make me very proud.

Dammitall 03-11-2009 08:53 AM

Echoing what everyone else has already said... this stuff is amazing.

Strange Famous 03-14-2009 03:02 PM

I presume she is a professional artist?

mixedmedia 03-14-2009 03:13 PM

No. As I said in my post she is not. But she does commissions for fans. Right now she is doing a lot of commissions (often of other people's characters) because she needs the money.

She is really excellent - and most of that comes from her level of sophistication. She has always been exposed to art of all kinds and she is aesthetically mature that way. I know she is great and I love it, but there are a lot of people out there doing this kind of work...not all of it excellent, but a lot of it is. She is certainly not alone.

Strange Famous 03-14-2009 03:34 PM

Sorry, didnt read all the posts. She certainly draws at a professional standard.

mixedmedia 03-15-2009 04:52 AM

Here are examples of the stuff she does on demand. She says it takes her about 2 hours to do one of these (sketching first on her Wacom pad and then filling in with color and placing on a 'found' background) and she charges $25. I think she could charge more, but I guess the market is mostly young people without a lot of money to spare. I think she does it mostly because she enjoys it...and, frankly, I'm sure she likes the compliments she gets. She says they call her The Machine at the furry site she posts these at because she can churn them out so fast. :p

Oh, and I hope it doesn't sound like I am trying to sell her work 'cause I'm not. I'm just bragging. :)

grumpyolddude 03-17-2009 06:48 PM

Not a fan of the furry stuff, but an admirer of true talent. She's wonderful, mm! Keep up the enthusiastic, yet gentle, support.
Congratulations on giving your children the freedom to explore their talents and express themselves! If only all parents would....

deadkitty 03-24-2009 10:30 PM

That's real high quality stuff

Fly 04-12-2009 07:00 AM

you brag away mixed............

Jetée 05-07-2009 09:01 PM

Great stylistic and creative imagination, mixed('s daughter).

I might've even come across some of her work in passing on deviantart (assuming she's on the network, but if not, someone else is producing very similar artwork to hers).

Other than the mention of a "furry website", I am very impressed with her progression and method to portraying her artwork.

Another thing I'm wondering is how she would incorporate & illustrate her unique vision with a charchter such as my avatar? (Not really asking for a commission, but pondering about her mindset on how she "morphs" ideas/personas to fit her demiurgic mold)

mixedmedia 05-10-2009 01:17 PM

yes, both her and her sister have been on deviant art for many years, it's likely you have seen her stuff there.

I really have no idea what her process is. From my understanding, people approach her with characters that they have already developed and she puts her stylistic spin on them, so to speak.

newtities 06-06-2009 09:08 AM

she has go excellent talents

Shauk 06-06-2009 11:03 AM

Does she have an online profile at like deviantart or anything? She's quite talented in her art style, even if the subject of that art is a bit niche.

mixedmedia 06-06-2009 11:09 AM

yes, she does: t3h-dyl4n on deviantART

and, this is her sister
HomicidalManda's deviantART gallery

I suppose it is obnoxious to so shamelessly promote my kids' talent, but I can't help it if they're awesome. They deserve it. :p
