Jon Stewart set to host Oscars

LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- As the clock ticks ever closer to the 78th Annual Academy Awards on March 5, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has finally found a host in Jon Stewart.

Sources confirmed Stewart's selection, which was reported Wednesday evening by the Los Angeles Times' Oscar watch site.

The assignment would represent the first Oscar-hosting spot for Stewart, who headlines Comedy Central's "The Daily Show." Stewart does have black-tie experience, though, having hosted the Grammy Awards in 2001 and 2002.

Oscarcast producer Gil Cates' choice of a host had become the subject of mounting suspense in Hollywood. Chris Rock, last year's host, was not asked to reprise the role. Reportedly, Billy Crystal, who has hosted eight times, turned down the honor.

Speculation also had centered on such other previous hosts as Whoopi Goldberg and Steve Martin.

I'm both happy and disappointed at the same time. Jon Stewart is one of the funniest satirists living today which should bring some refreshing humor to the awards this year. I'm disappointed, though, because I think the producers are going to try to keep in on a leash - comedically speaking.

I hope he takes the same attitude to the Oscars that he displayed on Crossfire: "I'm not going to be your monkey."

lol, I just assumed this was about Oscar De La Hoya, so when I first read it I was like "wtf"....

I find the rising cult of Jon Stewart quite amusing, this just adds to that amusement.

Eh, I'm sure I'll enjoy him, but I like my fluffy award shows to remain apolitical. It's always awkward when a presenter or winnner takes the opportunity at the podium to espouse his or her political views. The statement usually falls flat anyways. I'm all for subtle jabs though.

I remember Billys first run as host.....he was...shall we say....holding his own leash

I don't know why conservatives feel so threatened by him. They act as if he's on the DNC payroll. If they actually watch the show they'd see that he's owned his share of democrats too. I'm fairly confident that if Kerry had won he'd be just as relentless on him.

I watch the Oscars every year regardless of who hosts it, but now I'm looking forward to it even more :)

First words out of my mouth when I saw this: "Holy. Shit."

I think this will be seriously awesome. Furthermore, I'm pretty sure Jon Stewart is talented enough to pull off comedy without politics. He's a very smart man (also very good-looking).

Strange Famous 01-05-2006 03:44 PM

I wanna see Chris Rock do it.

Eweser 01-05-2006 03:53 PM

I always liked Billy Crystal, but I think Jon Stewart will do okay. Wasn't too fond of Rock last year.

People actually watch and/or care about the drivel that are award shows?

crow_daw 01-05-2006 05:58 PM

I used to watch the Oscars religiously, but I've fallen out of them as of late. However, I gotta say that I'm a big Jon Stewart fan, so I may have to make an extra effort to catch this year's show.

Am I the only one that thought Steve Martin did a fairly damn good job?

trickyy 01-05-2006 07:01 PM

jon stewart is kind of funny, but isn't it still 3 or 4 hours long?

World's King 01-05-2006 07:34 PM

At least he won't do an musical number like Crystal always did.

Cynthetiq 01-05-2006 08:00 PM
