TFP Toronto Meeting - November?
Does anyone feel like having another meeting in November?? I'm just really jealous that I couldn't be around the other day so I'm organizing another party.
I'll be back in action by Monday the 7th of November (i.e. overcome my jetlag and caught up with my lady), but I'm guessing the weekend jives more with school and work, but I know family stuff also takes place on the weekend. This hasn't stopped us before... I am fairly open in November so far. If we're looking at Saturday nights, I can't do the 26th, but others seem fairly open. I have a gig on the 19th, but I think it's done by 8p.m. so I could scoot over to wherever the party is. As far as a venue, I think the Victory Cafe worked well last time, but I'd be happy to do it anywhere. If I have full availability for the evening we choose I might be able to talk my wife into letting us use our new apartment (which would be great for a small get together), but I realize this presents issues of parking. So let's think about the following dates: November 11th, 12th, 18th, 19th Suggestions please!! |
Please not the 11th or 12th, since I have a term test on the 13th of November. I'm just the bringer of great news aren't I?
But, if everyone else can't do any other times, i'm sure I can slip away on the 11th for an hour or 2. |
Dang, I'm only in Toronto on the 12th, guess I can't make this meeting either :(
|
I am pretty sure I can make any one of those dates. I am in Santa Monica from the 2nd to the 9th or 10th and then I should be around for a while...
Let me know what date gets settled. |

So far it's looking like the 18th is the best night. I'm still waiting for others to chime in. Who's up for it?
|
Nov. 18 is fine by me
|
Decide on a date and I'll try to make this one. My schedule is too volatile right now for me to conclusively say that I'll be available or not on any of those days.
However, if we do it on November 11 and I am there I do traditionally observe a moment of silence at noon. Assuming that's the date you're all welcome to join me or just leave me alone to do it, but that's your fair warning. |
The 18th would be best for me!
I'm glad we're getting together again! |
WAIT!!
Harry Potter comes out on the eighteenth!!! I can't miss Harry Potter! :| What is a girl to do? |

|
Maybe we can extend the meet-up: an earlier show for Potter fans, and a meeting afterwards for those not interested? I'll look into it in more detail (showtimes and whatnot)...
|
You know what? I'd be willing to go to Harry Potter on Saturday if we're meeting up on Friday. :)
|
Hello!
I found two new and legitimate reasons as to why I can't get together with people on the 18th. 1. In class essay for BritLit 2. In class essay for Short story collections. -_- :stress: |
What .. you don't wanna ditch class ... again? :p (soooo just teasin hon :icare: )

My mind is still at work to find the best day here. This will be fun I think no matter how few can make it. I am optimistic.
To open up the possibilities here, would anyone consider lunch on the 19th? If enough people are available, it might be an even better proposition. And I'll try to think of the cheapest place possible (Pho Hung?) if this goes forward, so nobody feels any pressure. Just throwing that out there (he says a la Stewie). |
If it's lunch, I could get the car for the day, and make a trip down from the 'burbs... Where is Pho Hung?
|
Pho Hung, for those who don't know, is a vietnamese place near Bloor and Avenue. The two drawbacks I foresee are that it can be hard to get parking around there and that Vietnamese food isn't that vegetarian friendly, but before I discount it, what do people think of this idea?
Also cheap and veggy friendly that comes to mind is Sarah's Falafel near Bloor and Bathurst. Slightly easier to find parking and both veggy and carnivore friendly. Of course I need to know if a lunch hang is better than an evening one. |
Fine with me. So far that day is free too. And I love Vietnamese food. If I'm late, just order me some Bun with BBQ Pork and spring roll!
Aberkok: Are you thinking of the Pho Hung on Bloor, or the one on Spadina? |
I'm always up for Vietnamese food.
18th and 19th are both fine by me. Perhaps it would be best for those who CANNOT make it to voice their opinions? Then we can try to work something around to accomodate for the highest number of people. |
hehe, I'll be happy to go to any place near Fairview Mall! There's a great Noodle place nearby. But just say when and where, Viet is fine. So is Harvey's!
|
Lunch on the 19th would be scads better than dinner, or next to anything on the 18th.
|
hehehe... you said "scads"... I though only my Mom and I used that word.
I doubt I would be able to make a lunch on a Saturday I have kids to ferry around to various activities but I will see what I can do. |
I'm only in Toronto mondays to thursdays, usually.
|
I occurs to me suddenly that I'm unavailable all four days.
|
So far the most positive response has been for Saturday the 19th lunchtime. I'm also getting some good feedback about the choice of place, so as it stands now, that's when we'll do it.
Saturday, Nov. 19th - say 1p.m.? At Pho Hung Restaurant, 200 Bloor St. W (Just west of Bloor and Avenue Rd.) If you need some better directions, or if there is an overwhelming desire to change the time, then post it here. I wish everybody could make it, but November is a very busy time, and I think we'll accomplish a lot even by getting 4 or 5 of us together. I'll post another reminder and maybe a roll call might be useful too... |
Some directions would be great. I'm coming from York Mills Station. I would assume take the subway south to Bloor, get on the Bloor train and take it west. But from there, i'm lost.
|
Hello Everyone!
Are we still getting together? I would really like to. Saturday November 19th, at 1:00 PM. At Pho Hung Restaurant, 200 Bloor St. W (Just west of Bloor and Avenue Rd To get there, either: Take the University line to Museum. Get off at Museum and walk up Queens Park to Bloor, turn left on the side of the street opposite the ROM. There's a set of stairs with a red cow sign that reads "Pho Hung" Or Get off at St. George station and walk up Bloor in the direction of the ROM (sorry, I'm lousy with North South East West type directions.) until you reach the set of stairs with the red cow sign that reads "Pho Hung" |
I'm all for it. If it ends up being just me and Cello, that's totally cool too :D

Hey Cello, what do you think about a get together sometime between Christmas and New Years, for us transplanted Ontarians who are studying out of Province?

I can't make this one but would like to know of any other meeting.
|
sorry, can't make a Saturday meeting (too busy with kids in various programmes...) But the Pho Hung, is that the Viet place just next to the McDonalds across from the museum?

I'm sorry to say that I won't be able to make it either. Some family stuff has come up and I don't think I can get out of it. :( I'll try to eat some Vietnamese food in your honour.
Have fun, post pics, and let's arrange another meet before too long! |
So far it looks like it's just Seige, Cello, Cello's SO and me. No problems there. Just a heads up to anyone who this might affect, the Santa Claus parade is that day. That means there is no car access to Bloor in that area and the subway will be crowded.
For those who I know are coming, this shouldn't pose much of a problem, but I thought I'd mention it. Hmmmm... Maybe I'll give some thought to the next meeting. Doing it before Christmas sounds like a ridiculous challenge. This coming from the guys who initiated a jalapeno eating contest last night. |
You guys are meeting on Saturday the 19th right? The Santa Claus Parade is on Sunday the 20th.
It would have been completely nuts at the corner of Bloor and Avenue Road during the parade. That's where all the TV cameras set up and where there are the most camera whor... I mean families. |
Hmm. Bad news, I might not be able to attend because of one of my school projects. I have to schedule an interview with a speech therapist and chances are it will either be on Saturday or Sunday. Hopefully Sunday!
I'll know by tonight most likely. |
Now it turns out that my mom has cancelled christmas for my family (due to surgery, not scroogeness) so now all my christmas plans are up in the air. I knew as soon as I made plans to come home, this would happen. Memorial University also has the most fucked up spring break in the academic world Feb 20-23 (monday to wednesday, wtf?) so now I don't know what to do
|
Cancelled Christmas! How does one cancel Christmas?
Blast you, woman! |
Ok, my interview is no longer happening, so i'll be there on saturday :)
|
Huzzah for Siege!
|
oh shit! did this happen? damn damn damn but I think I was busy anyways. anybody up for a weekday lunch meeting in the winter?
|
So how did the lunch go?
|
Wow. I've been so busy I haven't even thought about reporting on Saturday's brunch! I was really great to meet Simon (cannot recall his TFP username at the moment), and Siege. Cellophane I (and we all) know pretty well by now.
I did a lot (too much?) of the talking, asking them all about what they do in school (Simon - English at York, Siege - Psycho-Linguistics at U of T). I've got about five years on everyone who was at the table, so for me it was like being back in the "salad days" if you will, remembering what it was like to be in school, especially in November, when times were busy and deadlines loomed large. The food, as always, was great, but as I've come to expect with Pho Hung, the service leaves a little to be desired. After about 30 mins. of waiting (Cellophane and Simon already about 15 mins. into their meals), I finally got up to ask about mine and Siege's food. I'm still not convinced it would have come if I hadn't asked for it. And it wasn't exactly rocket science to throw a bunch of raw beef into a bowl of broth and noodles. Unfortunately none of us had the foresight to bring a camera....d'oh! Well...we'll have to make up for that. When I get some energy up I'll start pushing for a January meeting. |
Do you have any gigs coming up? Perhaps some of us could drop in and see you in action.
|
I know it might be a little bit of a drive for both sides ... but anybody up for a Niagra Falls meetup? ya ya it's cold as hell out, but I haven't been before and it'd be about halfway for both sides.
|
sounds like a good time. A time of times. Too bad there was no photographic evidence.
|
Niagara Falls would actually be closer for some of our members in Kitchener/Waterloo and London/St. Thomas.
It's only about an hour and half to two hours from Toronto. |
I start the move Jan 1, give me a week or two (or three :|) to get settled in and find a job if I don't already have one .. then i'm up for whenever.

Oh and by the way...I'd definitely be into a Niagra Falls trip!!! December is pretty busy though, but if I can do it I will!! |
I think if there is going to be a trip to the falls it will be in January once Amonkie has had some time to settle into her new digs in Rochester.
|
Damnit someone has to tell me about these:(

You guys thought of carpooling down to the falls? You were saying it was a long ways from you, Pain Train, but if you could get yourself to Toronto, I know there's enough of you there if someone was willing to drive and the rest of you split gas - it would definitely bring the cost down for each person ...
|
Depending on when this is, and depending on if I can actually go, I would LOVE (need) to carpool with people.
|
Well, my track record for actually making it to these things is pretty bad so far (0 for 2) but I do genuinely want to meet all of you. I'd be game for Niagra Falls, assuming I can get the time in January. And if carpooling is being suggested, I'm always happy to provide chauffeur duties. My car is a smoking car (smokers - yay!) but if someone is deathly allergic or just really, really hates cigarette smoke, that rule is flexible. (non-smokers - yay!)
