Phobias

I got this from watching a show on Nation Geographic Channel, first there was a girl who was Claustrophobic, and then next was an Arachnophobic person.

This just makes me ask the question.

Do you have any Phobias?

me i cant think of any, but when talking about internal organs and how they work, kinda freaks me out.

Yours?

Shokan 06-01-2003 08:48 PM

Hornets and wasps and bees. I have never been stung by one, but I don't know if I am allergic to them.

I don't want to find out.

clavus 06-01-2003 08:50 PM

Ledge fear.

Don't...want...to...be...closer...to...the..edge...

MacGnG 06-01-2003 09:03 PM

used to be heights and dark but im pretty much over it now

Sun Tzu 06-01-2003 09:18 PM

Roaches; especially the ones that fly

NetterButter 06-01-2003 10:17 PM

snails and caterpillars, couldn't give me a million bucks just to even hold one.

phredgreen 06-01-2003 10:24 PM

i have a fear of being left alone.

Daval 06-02-2003 05:37 AM

Rats scare the crap outta me. The big ones that look like small cats.

I was at a cousins house who lives on a farm and I could hear the rats running around in the floorboards.

I got up, went to the barn and got two of the barn cats (that I am allergic too) and took them into my room with me.

My eyes were watering like mad and my nose was running, but those rats weren't gonna get me with my protectors.

krwlz 06-02-2003 05:58 AM

Slight clausterphobia here, nothing I can't overcome, but it still bothers me.

Oh, and I HATE when peole come up behind me, especialy if I didnt hear 'em. Drives me NUTS!

Glory's Sun 06-02-2003 06:08 AM

spiders freak the hell outta me.. dunno why..just always been like that. I'm better than I used to be about it but nonetheless I don't want to be near one

Unknown Poster 06-02-2003 06:14 AM

I don't know if it would technically claustrophobia, but when I was younger, I would freak out if I couldn't move a part of my body. If I was wrestling with someone and they got me into a hold I couldn't get out of, I would go nuts.

I am an incredibly sound sleeper and my only fear is waking up with a shotgun pointed at my head.If a light goes on anywhere in my house,I will wake up,but I can't hear a door slam if it meant my life. Since I live alone, maybe it's time for a dog,or a shotgun.

BoCo 06-02-2003 06:45 AM

Mostly just snakes. If they're in a cage, it's fine, but in the wild they scare the crap outta me. I don't ever know which are poisonous, and you never know when they're going to strike.

Omar12 06-02-2003 10:40 AM

Spiders
centipedes
snakes
Scorpions
heights
broken glasses on the floor

WhoaitsZ 06-02-2003 12:46 PM

I use to have arachnophobia. i would wig out if a small spider got close. i realized i was affraid if a small got to me i'd be stuck and unable to defend myself or even to stand up and shake it off.. defenseless

the big spiders never bothered me.

one day a spider dscended right in my face. my instinct was to kill it. i resisted the urge to kill, after all i preach Thou Shall Not Kill life... so i watched it... it was hard, but I did it. i put 100% effort into not panicking. i watched it.

a week later it happened again. this time i had much less panick.

now they don't bother me. i can't say i won't wig out if a black widow gets on me, but i feel good for controlling myself.

last Fall i did a southern No No! i found a recluse spider that managed to get trapped in a sealed jar. how the hell he breathed is beyond me.... i went and turned it loose.

now i respect them very much.

its not a phobia, but one thing that can make me queesy are worms. i have to give my lizards them, though, so oh darn. but they just...... gross me out.

as far as other reptiles or animals

i've held and played with a gator, dozens of lizards, dozens of snakes, frogs, turtles, pet rat that weighed about 2 pounds (huge), gerbil, birds, parrots, couple great parrots.... so on so on

Prophecy 06-02-2003 12:50 PM

When I was little was afriad of sleeping alone in the dark, but that was from watching the Gremblins movie.....

Now that I'm older I can't really think of anything I'd call a phobia... Though I am worried about losing my father...

I would say both...And get a pistol permit while your at it.

snowy 06-02-2003 01:04 PM

I'm claustrophobic. It sucks, especially at concerts, because then I have to be in the back in case I need to escape.

I also have a deep-seated fear of nuclear war. When I was in 9th grade, we watched a bunch of videos about the atomic bomb and its effects on the people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It was sick and sad that we as human beings could do that to people.

I am also extremely frightened of bridges. I have a recurring dream where I drive off of the end of an unfinished bridge and drown. A book I once read suggested that such recurring dreams associated with strong fears or phobias is how you died in a past life. That provides some comfort...lightning doesn't strike the same place twice, right?

cchris 06-02-2003 05:37 PM

Chicks with dicks.

krwlz 06-02-2003 05:41 PM

cchris, I didnt even think of that, but you are ABSOLUTLY right!

guthmund 06-02-2003 07:52 PM

I've got a phobia about razor blades. Specifically cutting anything with razor blades.

Of course any of my old girlfriends would tell you I've a phobia of commitment, but I don't seem to see it :D

MSD 06-02-2003 08:12 PM

Spiders, getting better.

Claustrophobia, not the generally seen type, but being stuck somewhere and not being able to move is terrible. I can deal with being tied up, but put me in a box with my head sticking out, and I'll panic. I've panicked when sitting on the end seat with two other people in the back seat of a car. the lack of range of motion does it. I guess it's restriction of movement by being pinned against solid objects.

silverback 06-02-2003 09:19 PM

I do not like high places...kinda strange because when i was younger it never really bothered me. Maybe getting older does give you more common sense

komodo 06-02-2003 09:33 PM

I'm afraid of damn near everything, but I've overcome pretty much all of my fears when I need to. For example, I hate ledges... but when I was hiking and the rest of the group was waiting for me on the other side, I just walked over it. Basically, fear is a matter of convienence for me. If it's inconvienent to be afraid, then I'm not. The rest of the time, ledges make me crap myself.

Lebell 06-02-2003 09:49 PM

When I was younger, high places and needles.

Now no problem with high places and I have three pierces.

Go figure.

butthead 06-02-2003 11:37 PM

Social phobia.

madsenj37 06-02-2003 11:44 PM

I fear instability, the unknown, heights, snakes, dying alone and not accomplishing anything in my life.

MrFlux 06-03-2003 12:14 AM

I don't have any phobias but I scare pretty easily.

Loup 06-03-2003 03:37 AM

Coulrophobia (the fear of clowns).
I kid you not, I hate them, scared shitless of them.
I'm also not fond of sport team mascots.

GoldenOuroboros 06-03-2003 04:27 AM

Poisonous spiders, poisonous snakes.

Same as clavus with the fear of ledges.. hate them.. but seem to have to test myself always..

Exact same thing here. When I was younger heights didn't bother me a bit. Now, high places just freak me the fuck out! I would imagine that if anyone were to videotape me cleaning out the gutters on my house, they could clean up on one of those "Funniest Home Video" shows.

Ratman 06-03-2003 05:26 AM

Carnies. Circus people. Really small hands. (AP)

Troublebot 06-03-2003 05:54 AM

Not real big on spiders and snakes. Little spiders don't freak me out, but the big nasty looking ones do. Blech.

Not real fond of hights. I can get up on my roof and clean gutters and I love the window seat on the plane, it's standing on top of a building and looking straight down that freaks me out. Recently I was in a meeting in a hotel in downtown Chicago. The room we were in was on the 40th floor and had an impressive view of the city. I was sitting in a chair, facing away from the windows and had the strange sensation that the chair was slowly sliding toward the window, where I would fall to my death. Made for a fun meeting.

'Course, I still want to skydive and bungee jump. Gotta face your fears!

SiN 06-03-2003 08:18 AM

creepy-crawly things.

bugs, spiders mostly.

snakes and rodents are ok..more so, at least.

but bugs, especially the ones that fly or are nasty-lookin like roaches or centipedes....*shiver*

and there's lots of spiders here in Germany, more than there were in Minnesota.

G_Whiz 06-03-2003 08:21 AM

I do have a fear of heights, but I love to fly and sit by the window.

Go figure.

LutherMac 06-03-2003 09:42 AM

I only have slight phobias... I'm afraid of heights, but only when I'm on unsteady footing, such as a roof, ladder, tree, etc. If I'm peering down off the top of the Empire State Building or out of an airplane window, I'm perfectly fine. Get me climbing an eight foot ladder, and I go crazy!

Also, I'm a bit claustrophobic (sp?)... I can't stand being in really small areas where I can't stand up and walk around easily (ie Crawlspaces, ductwork, etc) and also can't stand to be in crowds where I can barely move around....

Other than that... I'm pretty much fine with everything..

World's King 06-03-2003 11:15 AM

Aquaphobia.

spectre 06-06-2003 06:41 PM

I'm afraid of something bad happening to my friends or family.

There are other things which bother me a little, but I can usually ignore them when I have to. For example, I'm not a big fan of public speaking, but I have given a few public speeches without too much trouble.

boggled bologna 06-06-2003 06:56 PM

holy crap. roaches can fly? now im scared

spankthru 06-07-2003 12:46 PM

I once had to climb ub a 12 foot ladder into a front-end loader bucket on a tractor to side a house. I never want to do that again!

snowace56 06-07-2003 09:31 PM

snakes and spiders, omg they send shivers down my back. and now apparently sharks as i jumped in finding nemo when the shark popped up...that was the sadest moment in my life....lol

GakFace 06-07-2003 10:42 PM

well.... Mine is kinda weird, and i don't know the name.. as its quite specific.

I'm scared of Spiders...... But only when they are indoors, and spin webs. Once they get tarantula looking, They don't scare me even if they spin webs. Basically if they are hairy, they don't bother me. I have seen some pictures of spiders that are bigger than clocks.... that might freak my out enough to put holes in my walls with a pistol. Whenever I see a spider in my house, I have someone else dispose of it, as i can't get near it.

WetSpot 06-08-2003 12:09 AM

Needles. BAD. I pass out if I see one touching skin. Passed out giving blood for my mom. Passed out sewing a button on a shirt. Screw it. I'll go w/o shots and buttons. YAY ZIPPERS! Really, though...is this called hypophopia? or what is the clinical name for it?

fuzzix 06-08-2003 07:18 AM

I'm afraid of geckos. I don't know why, but I am.

Averett 05-24-2004 12:25 PM

*bump*

I hate Stryofome. Drop ceilings? Are the devil. At college we had them, and my roommate wanted to move the TV to the other side of the room, so she had to run the cable through the ceiling. I had to leave the room. The sound of the stryofome. Shudder! I hate packages that come with that in it. Creeps me out. I don't like it when resturants put the leftovers in a stryofome container. Everyone knows I hate this stuff, so they will rub their hands over it, making that noise that I hate. Bastards.

I'm slightly claustrophobic. I don't like being in crowded elevators. Sometimes when I'm in the back seat of a car with 2 others (3 in a row) I get very nervous. I can't sit in the middle. I'll get very fidgety. I was at a concert a week ago... Front row. 2nd opening act came on and everyone started pushing and shoving around. I had to get out of there. I started to freak out. I worry that I'll get crushed.

Escalators freak me out too. I hate using them when they're broken too. The lines on them really screw with my vision. And I worry that it will start working when I'm going up/down it. Heals on an escalator? Forget it. I'm certain that my shoelace will get caught in an escalator.

mystmarimatt 05-24-2004 12:41 PM

Snakes. I freakin' hate snakes. I want to kill every sake on earth, no matter what the ecological damage. slimy, evil fuckers.

And really old women. That's a deepseated fear, my step-greatgrandmother was a naturally bitter, mean person, and i was deathly afraid of her. During family functions, we felt obligated to invite her, and I have vivid memories from when i was 4 or 5 of my dad and grandpa teasing me, saying "Matt, we're going to go get Gran-Gran, want to come?" And i'd go run and hide in the little space between the piano and the wall.

bobbobbobbob 05-24-2004 12:47 PM

Sponge. The artificial stuff, not natural sponges. I just can't bear touching it. Certain foams are the same, the ones found in cheap seats etc. Makes my spine twist even thinking about it.

StormBerlin 05-24-2004 01:04 PM

The dark and heights. More so heights than the dark... well actually they're about even. I was never afraid of those things when I was a kid, it was brought about when I was a teenager... I don't know why though.

maleficent 05-24-2004 01:58 PM

Down Escalators

Clowns - they completely and totally creep me out, I have crossed streets to get away from them.

la petite moi 05-24-2004 03:01 PM

I'm afraid of the dark sometimes, closed spaces, heights, spiders, and getting fat.

Oh, and escalators!!! I'm afraid they'll eat my shoes!!

05-24-2004 04:35 PM

falling & high places- especially steep slopes- it mainly derives from many dreams I've had of slipping down a steep slope of some sort......

Wayngo 05-25-2004 06:32 AM

I hate spiders and have a fear of heights. just something about not being in control when your that high up that freaks me out.

Not a big fan of the dark either. Outside anyway.

Polyphobic 05-25-2004 06:40 AM

Fear of heights. Fear of large amounts of insects. Alone or in pairs I have no problems. Plus, clausterphobic.

Nachimir 05-25-2004 12:50 PM

I had extremely severe social phobia in my teens, but as I took more possession of my identity and found friends I truly valued, I gained control of it. I think it centred around feelings of unworthiness.

I still have difficulty in some respects; though I don't actually experience aversion to crowded rooms or dislike myself anymore, my motivation to socialise is still unusually low.

I love darkness and heights.

Karby 05-25-2004 02:38 PM

spiders. and snakes.
i think those are the two biggest fears i have. there could be others, but those are the first things that come to mind.

amonkie 05-25-2004 04:39 PM

I intensely hate/fear getting knocked over by a large wave and getting pushed around by the wave under the water. Too many times I try to swim "up" and instead end up crashing into a rock at the bottom, or getting my mouth full of water from panicking.

Chemical 05-25-2004 04:47 PM

Remember the scene in Kill Bill V2 where Uma's character is buried alive? That part freaked me out completely. I almost had to leave the theatre. Just the thought of it is freaking me out.

SixEdxMia 05-26-2004 11:37 PM

I assumed that phobia meant an irrational fear of xxxxxx.

I consider alot of these posts to healthy respect for dangerous things. but what do I know?I'm such a fuck that I cant leave the house alone, and I live alone So It's just easier to stay in.

Agoraphobia.Carnophobia,Nosocomephobia.but I am getting better... right? : /

Phobia
Written by: R. Davies (the KINKS)

Published by: Davray Music Ltd., 1991

Lyrics:
Everybody got something hidden
In a darkness deep inside
Everybody gotta fatal flaw
Everybody got something to hide
Take a look into my eyes
See the fear and silent cries - phobia
Deep inside, take another look at it - phobia
Everybody got a phobia
Take another look, what you got - phobia
There are alleyways of your psyche
That have gotta be analyzed
Psychological penetration
Of the fear you cannot hide
There's a key to a door to be opened
And I wanna take a look inside
And in the darkest shadow of your mind
What you gonna find?
Phobia

Out under a technicolor ray
It all disappears on a bright, sunny day
But even on a crowded street
Somebody you might meet
Might trigger a repeat of phobia
Strikes again, fear of fire and being buried alive
Dizzy heights, wire coat hangers
Things that crawl and go bump in the night - phobia
Fear of germs
Creepy crawlies that make you squirm - phobia
Images of long ago, memories that you hardly know
A minor childhood incident
Triggering something deep below
Spiders' webs and black cats
Cockroaches and sewer rats
Full moons and witches hats
Creepy crawlies, vampire bats - phobia
I'm talking about phobia

Crowded rooms, too many faces
Suffocation, open spaces
Everybody gotta weird sensation
That they wanna keep trapped inside
Maybe it's a sexual deviation
Hiding beneath a respectable guise
If you are of this persuasion
There is just one explanation - phobia
Started out a long time ago - phobia
When you were small you may have seen a sight
But you were too young to know - phobia
What you got - phobia
Everybody got phobia, what you got - phobia
Everybody got phobia, take another look, what you got?
Everybody got phobia, what you got?
Phobia

spiders.... i swear i have a spider sense (not like spiderman) but when i walk into a room, somethin clicks and i know there is a spider somewhere...i have gotten so good at throwing my shoe across the room just to kill it, that if shoe-throwing was an olympic sport....well shit..i'd have the gold, and i blame it all on the movie arachnaphobia that i saw when i was like 7.....stupid stupid movie.

punx1325 05-27-2004 07:05 PM

I am afraid of spiders and snakes. Mostly snakes, there is just something freaky about an animal who can kill you and not ever hear it coming...

Redjake 05-27-2004 07:57 PM

Clowns, bees, puppets, animatronics

dogzilla 05-28-2004 01:55 AM

Bees, since my father was allergic to one type.

Climbing anything more than a few feet high.

Odd thing is I'm sort of ok around cliffs and will walk on narrow trails near a cliff edge, but it does bother me.

zxello 05-28-2004 09:16 PM

i have a DEATHLY fear of needles, I actually knocked my brother down cause he was in a doorway standing in my way to get out of the room when i had to get a shot at the doctor. I very RARELY get shots, I HATE THEMM!!!!!!!!!11!1!1!!!one!11

im feeling sick / nervous already just thinking of them.

Here's a list of phobias if you want to look up the official name: http://www.phobialist.com/

Otherwise, mine is swimming in large body of water. I have no problem swimming in pools but in lakes or oceans, it freaks me out since I hate swimming in someplace where anything could come up and kill you...

maleficent 05-30-2004 03:45 PM

What's truly frightening is that my bizarre fear of clowns actually has a name (Coulrophobia)- -so I'm not the only freak who has this fear?

canuckguy 05-30-2004 04:08 PM

very irrational fear of spiders, they freak me the hell out, no other bugs scare me, not snakes. nothing, except maybe death i guess, although i think i would rather die then hold a hairy spider. dunno why spiders but damn they are freaky. oddly i get great joy out of looking at them in pet stores and on the net.:)

forseti-6 05-30-2004 04:53 PM

I fear old age... meaning when I hit an age where family members are dying, when I have incontinence, when I just can't do anything I want anymore. I sure hope I am never bed-ridden or need a wheelchair or anything.

analog 05-30-2004 06:36 PM

basements.

i have no specific reason to be- i.e., no basement-related trauma. in fact, i was never afraid of the basement in the house up morth... and i've never had a basement in any house i've lived in since then... but I am deathly afraid of basements.

I love the dark, btw- the basement could be lit up like 4th of july... there'd have to be several people down there to make it ok.

I literally broke a door to get out of a basement once. Got left in there alone, i was napping. I wake up, i'm in the basement alone. I try the door, it won't open. I tried to get it open, but nothing I did worked. Turns out it WAS jammed. I broke the door down to get out. Damn near died I was having such a bad anxiety attack.

*bump*

I have a phobia of dogs. It is really a pain in the ass and makes life very difficult. I'm constantly on alert whenever we go to the park or in the canyon to go hiking because no one obeys leash laws and their dogs run wild all the time. Whenever I go to someone's house for the first time, I always have to ask if they have dogs. And then explain WHY I want to know if they have dogs and if they do, can they please lock them up somewhere. I've never been bitten by a dog in my life, so I don't know where the phobia came from. I have gotten some control over it, so that if I'm faced with a situation with a strange dog I don't have a panic attack, though.

I also have a fear of heights (I don't like flying but I can, and I can ride rollercoasters if I make sure I don't look down. The ferris wheel...forget it). I used to have major arachnaphobia too, but if the spider is small, I can deal with it. Large spiders, and large centipedes too, scare the hell out of me. Hubby thinks its funny when I scream and squeal when I see large spiders.

Elphaba 05-10-2005 03:48 PM

Fear of ledges more adequately describes what I thought was a fear of heights. If I am safely contained as in an airplane, I have no fear response. Even seeing someone else near a ledge scares me to into stomach lurches.

Fear of needles is one that I've been working to overcome. I'm ok with one poke with a lot of self-talk. "Oops, I missed, let's try this again" will turn me chalk white and tumbling to the floor.

Lead543 05-10-2005 04:05 PM

I have a penis phobia...well...more or less a sperm phobia. NO BABIES!

I also have a phobia of pain, I hate it when anything hurts and I'm afraid to do things that might cause an injury.

Annddd the classic bug/spider/bee/reptile phobia. Ugggghhhh.

I am also afraid of escalators. I do use them, but I have a hard time getting on them, especially when people are behind me.

I also have a phobia? extreme disliking for anything touching or hitting my head. Can't handle a pillowfight or friendly taps to the head.

I *hate* the dark. Martel and I went up to Mt. Pisgah last night about midnight, and were up on an overlook on the parkway and I was trying not to freak out- I would'nt go more than a foot away from the car!

I also HATE baloons- not the helium kind but the other kind. Wave one in my face and I go ballistic.

What?!

At least I don't drive as bad as Adam...

My phobia...I fuckin hate swimming in the ocean or lake. There's always something in those things that I don't want swimming up to me...

Spiders and Mice.

There is a good story why, and I thank you for reminding me.

Time to write it down and post again!

I used to be the same way... I had never been stung by any insect, and was really freaked out whenever there were bees/wasps around. If one flew around me while I was outside, I'd spaz out and run away as fast as I could.

I was finally stung when I was about 12. I think I went into shock. I must have stared at that little stinger sticking out of my leg for a good 5 minutes watching it pulse as it pumped venom into me. I thought I was going to die.

I remember going to the nurse's office (I was at camp) and waiting there for her to come back. All the while with the stinger stuck in my leg. I finally realized that I wasn't going to die (and the nurse STILL wasn't back!), so I took matters into my own hands and just yanked it out.

I couldn't get over how it wasn't painfull... just felt like a little slap. Here I had been expecting excruciating agony! What a let down! :)

Since then, I've been stung dozens more times. It's just a minor incomvenience and itches like crazy after. But I still have those few instinctual seconds where I still spaz out before I realize I'm not afraid of them anymore.

Like Indiana Jones said many movies ago, "Snakes.....it HAD to be snakes."

Me, too.

Even if they show up on TV, I get gee-gee.

I'd add both of those to my list of phobias -- professional interaction is easy, and I have no problem with that - it's the social that I can't do..

Fear of Needles (Aichmophobia): I've gotten a lot better at this one... I used to almost pass out and now I can sit there and barely feel it.

Fear of Heights (Acrophobia): Anything over 10 feet and I need a safety rope. I'm not sure I'd classify it as a phobia, as I can do it, I just look like an idiot with all the "safety precautions" I take. Strangely enough, I'm always the one in the family that ends up on the roof when something needs to be done up there. Go figure.

Claustrophobia: I got stuck head first in a culvert once when I was young. I was hysterical. Being buried alive really freaks me out too.

I'm agoraphobic. I dont like wide open spaces, I dont feel safe in them and I get very nervous and panicky. Lately that's been subdued somehow, so that's good. I am also a bit arachnaphobic.
