The 4th of July is great. That is the date that we officialy thumbed our noses at England. However...I believe that the date that The United States of America really became a country of its own was October 19, 1781. The date that Major General Lord Cornwallis surrendered to General George Washington. The capitulation of the British to the Americans and French forces ended the fighting, and led to the [Paris?] Peace Treaty that formally acknowledged the independence of the American states.

For some reason though, that's not as much fun.

Happy 4th of July!!!!

Wow... is this just like our Canada Day? That's so cool that you guys decided to have a celebration just like us... only a few days later.

Damn, I was just on hold with Service Honda trying to see about my order. Waiting for the next service rep for 10 minutes! Long distance! Then I see this thread and realize they're closed. You'd think they'd change their message. It sucks that us Canadians have to work today! Happy Independence Day!

dlish 07-04-2005 08:43 AM

Happy Fourth everyone! May your barbecue be barbecuey-licious, your fireworks bright and sulphury, and your neighbors doing their piccolo petes elsewhere ;)

Happy Independence Day to all you Americans

Hardknock 07-04-2005 09:14 PM

I closed my eyes and pretended i was in iraq during the fireworks. It seemed like a more honest way to come to terms with what america really stands for. I thought about the absurdity of civilian america gathering in large groups to watch large explosions in the sky while american soldiers are across the globe are being subjected to a similar, albeit more deadly show. Then i thought about how all the random explosions throughout minneapolis during the last week might have affected anyone suffering from war-induced PTSD. It all seemed a little gaudy to me.
