Sheesh... I'm behind the times here.

Last time I tried to donate, PayPal was not an option due to the "adult" nature of the board. Has that changed?

It's rather interesting when people who opposed capitalism finally feel the full force of the bankruptcy of their ideology.

Just sayin'.

Well you aren't donating to tfp technically, you are donating to Halx as a person -- whatever the money is used for is not really paypay's concern :)

Cough cough... Kiss my way?

greytone 06-11-2005 10:14 AM

I sent some too. I am sorry to say this, but it seems that running the TFP may have one thing in common with being a minister. People (me included) just don't think about sending in donations unless someone reminds us. Constant or regular requests may just be necessary. I will try to do better however.

snowy 06-11-2005 11:06 AM

Things are a little tight around here at the moment, but I sent what I could. I hope it helps! :)

Opposed to capitalism? WHAT?!?!? Where in the holy fuckin' shit did you pull that out of?

All I could possibly think of is my refusal to put ads on this site. Well, you obviously haven't been around for long enough, because I have tried ads. They didn't work. Here is why: The truth is, the TFP gets very few unique visitors in comparison with the total traffic. All the bandwidth gets racked up by the same users hitting the pages repeatedly. So, in terms of traffic, TFP is not the grand central station you think it is, it is, rather, a large company break room.

In other words, if I put ads up, it'll be a case of the same people viewing he same ads over and over. Now, I'm guessing that if you didn't click on an advertisement once, you won't click on it when it's presented to you again. And again. And again. And again. In fact, all that advertisement will do is take up space. That's all they have done in the past. That's all they will do, if applied to the TFP.

So.. opposed to capitalism? Wow. You have got to be missing some major people skills to think that up. You don't know me, and before I just typed that out, I'm going to assume you probably had no clue about the dynamics of internet traffic and advertisement. Please, stop and think next time you want to undermine someone else, kick them while their down. Yeah... that's the ticket.

The fact is, donations work excellently as a form of sustenance for the site, but only if I advertise for them. The users of the TFP are fuckin' awesome (well, MOST of them) and the only reason why I haven't been getting much in the way of donations is simply because I haven't been actively asking for them. Mathematically, the rate of donation-per-member is magnificently higher than any click-per-impression rate any ad company can dream of even imbellishing. Now, think that if the MINIMUM donation is $5 (nevermind that the AVERAGE donation is a little above $20) and the most you can get per-click is.. ohh.. 3 cents, maybe you'll start to understand why THIS capitalist (meaning ME) stays FAR AWAY from advertising on his humble little site.

Now, before I proceed to shove your hoof even farther down your throat, are you happy you made that statement? Have you proved your infinite wisdom and superiority by sniping at my methods from behind an anonymous screen name? Just sayin'.

The TFP is not a business. It is a hobby. It's a project. As I've found, you cannot even incorporate it into a physical institution as a business plan because the fact of the matter is - discussion is not a commodity. It's a freedom. FREEdom. My intention with the TFP is to provide a place for people to discuss their views and learn from others without interruption from some unwarranted complications (such as an idiot who thinks they know better... or some flashy, annoying banner ad) and all I can say is... we're getting there.

*exhale*

kramus 06-11-2005 01:36 PM

I'm all for being asked. Otherwise the structure behind the community that is TFP would slide right into my blind spot.

It's your fascist little thought police project with heavy handed moderation.

What you have done quite aptly demostrates the tragedy of the commons. You have something like 50,000 regs, and can't get enough monthly donations to foot the bill? Wow! That is about as stark as it gets.

SinisterMotives 06-11-2005 03:11 PM

99% are here for free pr0n.

Considering that pr0n is one of the most profitable businesses on the internet, it's rather pathetic that the board owner can't figure out how to create a $400 per month income stream from pr0n in order to cover the expense of the board.

Could we at least try to not make up statistics?

Please, could you check out the threadcount and post count for the TB, compared to the rest of the board? As well, check out how many replying in the TB are also making quality posts in other areas of TFP. Yes there are those who just come for the free pornography in the erogenous zone but it is certainly not 99%. I don't even think it's a majority.

dylanmarsh 06-11-2005 04:12 PM

Color me a donator.

Halx 06-11-2005 04:14 PM

So not only do I hate capitalism, I am also a fascist. Heh. You have issues. Major fuckin' issues.

The TFP is obviously not the place for you, McCarthy, but why are you still here?

You keep making statements that demonstrate how LITTLE you know about what goes on here at the TFP. You forget that life is all about PERESPECTIVE and your opinion is being formed from only a singular point of view. You forget that you may not have the correct angle. You forget a lot of things.

The TFP has about 50,000 member records in the database. Of those, I'm willing to bet that about 5000 of them are actually active. The reason for such a dramatic difference? Over 2 years of dead accounts from lurkers, banned users, unconfirmed accounts, and people who simply decided the TFP was not for them. I could prune the users, if I wanted to. It's always handy to keep it there though, so people like you can make your bogus accusations to show how little you actually know about the REAL process.

Once again, we're using our brains here. Calling the TFP fascist is about as dynamic a thought as calling your arab neighbor a terrorist. How could you possibly hope to know what goes on with the thought process of the staff? I need to remind you that life is all about perspective. Everyone approaches a situation differently, with different biases and different experiences.

I hate to put it so bluntly, but I'm really ticked off that some of you people feel the need to make this bullshit accusations. The bare truth is that you do not know shit about the things you are commenting on. You are trying to call other people on what you THINK they are about. You have never met them in your life. You have never had a person to person conversation with them either. Yet, you somehow feel comfortable calling them fascist? WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU?!?!?

God damn it, I cannot believe the ignorance under which some people operate. Yeah, I know I'm going a little over the edge here, and I probably have no chance of making you see eye to eye with me because I'm attacking YOU, but right now, I could give a shit about making friends with some jackass know-it-all on the internet. I'll spend every ounce of energy and will that I have in defense of the people who have given me their trust (the loyal users of the TFP, the staff of the TFP, the generous donors, and my real friends) and saying anything like what you've been belching out is an attack on the ideals of ALL of those people. I will not stand for it.

Actually since everyone has to meet a certain number of posts BEFORE they are open to the porn I guess, that blows your theory out of the water.

Plus if 99% are here for the free pr0n. that still leaves 3000 active that aren't.

Instead of being bitter, realize that Hal created and worked extremely hard to make this a wonderful place, that is pretty much censor-free, allows free thinkers to post on any topic they so desire and get feedback, a place where TRUE friends can be made and a place where one can learn on any subject because there is someone here that can help.

This is a diverse and beautiful creation and we owe Hal thanks for his vision, not to condemn him or bad mouth him anonymously while we take full advantage of HIS site.

I believe this creation can become so much more than just what it is and I for one am thankful that we have someone like a Hal that is willing to try. He surrounds himself with great people (the admins and mods), Artelevision, Analog, Maleficient, Tecoyah, UnclePhil, Sin, Lebell are just some of examples of the wonderous minds he has surrounded himself with.

This is not to brown nose because I DON"T HAVE TO. I can take advantage of this place and mind my business and not say a damned word and noone would think any less or more of me.

I choose to write this because in all honesty I love TFP and the diverse people here, and it is because of Hal and who he has chosen to surround himeslf with that makes this place what it is.

So once I get a physical addres some of my hard earned dollars will go to Hal to keep this haven, again, NOT because I have to or because I have ulterior motives, but solely because I believe in Hal and the people that make this place a home and family to those of us who choose to see it, believe in it and use it for what it is.

Perhaps if you had bothered becoming part of this community you would understand.

Instead you are one of those sad individuals that comes into someones house, spreads shit on the walls and calls it "free speech". Then you complain when the owner cleans it up.

Why don't you go somewhere else?

Actually with the headaches from people like you and the daily headaches we on the outside never see, I'm surprised and grateful to Hal, the Admins and Mods for staying and keeping this place going.

I can honestly say I probably wouldn't. I'd say fuck it and close it down.

I think it takes a strong and secure person to do what these people do and to ask for help, well sometimes people realize no matter how great ideas are, they can't do it alone.

Whatever you think is appropriate, based on what you can afford and what you get out of TFP.

Every little bit does help out...

As mal said, whatever you feel is appropriate. If you can kick in $5 - $10, that would be great. If you can send more, we certainly wouldn't complain. Just send what you're comfortable sending, that's plenty. If everyone just chipped in a little bit, Hal wouldn't have to worry.

wonderwench..if you call the TFP "fascist"... and start your experience here by talking a load of crap about people trying to do good, and criticizing their attempts to keep this great community running... then don't be surprised when our little regime (i assume thats what you'll call it) gangs up on you.
You just got here, the 1st things you say are negative. You invite yourself in the TFP and talk shit about the guys running it. How do you expect your opinions to be valued???
TFP is evolution, and you're all the way at the bottom. You probably haven't even had a good look at the greatness of communication and exchange of ideas and ways of thought here.
If you're gonna post the same kind of indirect "just sayin" crap, then you've missed the purpose of this system. stay at the bottom.
Halx, please don't ban him yet. I'd like to see how stupid and senseless his comments get.

snowy 06-11-2005 11:21 PM

Obviously the person attacking Hal and TFP knows little about both. That has been established thoroughly, and all I wonder is if perhaps said person IS here for the TB?

Personally, that's not what I came for and that's not why I came back after a year and a half away. It's also not why I stay.

I come for the people. I come for the open affection I get from many other TFPers, for the opinions, for the advice. I come for the "ladies in arms" feeling I get from the LL, the opportunity to offer my expertise in Sexuality. But really, I stay because of the people--because of Halx, sweetpea, Charlatan, Gilda, kramus, Shanifaye, K-Wise, tecoyah, abaya, amonkie, Lebell, sexymama, ngdawg, ratbastid, lurkette, TOK, Squishor, Sage...I could go on and on and on with my list as to why I come here (and if I missed you I sincerely apologize).

And THAT is why I donated.

BuDDaH 06-11-2005 11:39 PM

I have two words for you and your stupidity or ignorance to get the message of what we stand behind here at the TFP.

I donated as soon as I saw the announcement, but just found this thread.

Bam. Done :D

FallenAvatar 06-12-2005 01:16 AM

Plan to donate what I can spare tomorrow after I check the bank account.

ShaniFaye 06-12-2005 02:51 AM

Payday is wednesday....it wont be a lot, I have my own bandwidth bills and a wedding but once I figure out how to use Dave's paypal account (mine is attached to ex hubby's crackhead bank account and paypal wont let me set up a new one cause Im on Dave's account and for some strange reason you can have more than one paypal on the same account) I will def send something

Mondak 06-12-2005 06:39 AM

Not sure if I donated because I like this place or to see if I could swing a kiss from Sweetpea for it. Either way - the money went through on Friday and was confirmed.

Halx and everyone else, I am very sorry that you have to have threads like this with folks who are such a pain in the ass. You don't deserve that just to keep the doors open.

SinisterMotives 06-12-2005 07:15 AM

BuDDaH,

This isn't surprising. Her trolling has caused wonderwench to be banned, shunned, or run off of every board she's posted on this year. You would have had to do it sooner or later, I think.

oh, .... the ... uh, humanity ... or something.

The only thing better than that post would have been a recording of you saying it into a camera, followed by a frenzy of clicking the ban button, kind of like the apartment scene from Pulp Fiction.

Thanx Becca.....very much

You get a Kiss from me...

Me, too. I'm new, and would hate to lose what I just found - intelligence, compassion and such variety! This is a fantastic place, well worth supporting.

Beccarain 06-14-2005 05:33 AM

Woo hooo, my first tfp kiss . . . back at ya tacoyah
Cartuni, very well put!

Y'know, it appears that tfp needs a steady stream of donations. If enough of us commit to donate what we can each month, I'll bet we could spare Halx from having to crack the whip again.

So how 'bout it? Everyone budget something for tfp (I heard the groan, c'mon, it's not as hard as it sounds); set a monthly reminder using a wall calendar, school planner, Outlook, Daytimer, a sticky note on the mirror with coffee dribbles on it . . . whatever works for you. Those of us without a steady income, give what we can when we can . . . those with a regular paycheck, plan to set aside $10 or whatever we can comfortably afford.

Saving a little money here and there can really add up. Everyone's financial situation is different; look for ways to redirect some of your spending. Perhaps you can skip going out to dinner one night, or wait until the movie that just came out at the theater is on cable. If you are a regular at the local Starbucks, just pass it by a few days each month. Maybe stay home on Friday night and read a book instead of blowing $20 on beers at the bar. Pass on that lap dance. See where I'm going with this?

We all benefit from tfp in some way or we would not be here. Halx has provided us with the best forum I have found in countless hours of searching for intellegent conversation. tfp is well worth our investment, don't you think?

Redlemon 06-14-2005 05:44 AM

I remember WonderWench. She seemed interesting, then she went all Ann Coulter in the politics section, then she vanished. I thought she had been banned long ago. And, checking her profile, looks like she hadn't bothered to post anything since August 2004. Yeah, she'll be missed.

I guess it would be bad form to post in this thread without donating... (opens second tab, opens paypal, hits send)... donation on the way.

Unfortunately, this type of behavior does not seem to be isolated to wonderwench or the political threads, lately.

Quoted since it is well worth repeating. I just donated a lump sum to cover for the lack of donations in the past and will make sure to donate consistently in the future.

tecoyah 06-14-2005 04:07 PM

Last month....I started a TFP Jar....seriously. All my change went in it, and the occasional bill from pockets. I ended up with fourty bucks after about five weeks.
Looking at it now (sent the $40 on donation request day) theres already five bucks in it again. Thanks for the reminder Hal.

Tec, that is an AWESOME idea. I probably have $20 on my floor alone. Too bad it's all covered with dirty clothes. Ew.

Now that works for me

Whenever I think of onesnowyowl in her room with her clothes all over the floor I'll put some change in my "wish I could be there" jar

Hey, if it works for me . . .

sashime76 06-15-2005 04:02 AM

To some of us, TFP has become a part of life. I arrive at work early in the morning to avoid traffic and to get home early to play with my boys. I may or may not have a very hectic day ahead but I always log in to read on the new threads / make replies to some. It's just like sipping a cup of coffee or tea everyday. Let's hope TFP stays around for a long time.

It is a cyber community we helped create, anyone is free to join or leave as they please. There is no need for any targeted attack. Don't like your cyber mates here? Can't stand the mods? Hate the rules? Don't log in then!

I tried to make a payment through PayPal to help out...but alas I have no credit card and I don't get how to send the money otherwise...if anyone can offer any advice I'd be grateful. I'm such an ass. :p

I shall be soon donating again, but by Paypal (it's my only option, sorry).

Please keep up the good work.

I think it was a limited time offer, and I just missed the cutoff as well. I really wanted one while she still had the Pea avatar, our avatars could have made beautiful music together. Ah well.

If you have a checking account, you should be able to connect Paypal to that and use that to donate :) My Paypal is set up for direct payments from my checking--it's easier and faster than a credit card anyhow :)

Awww, thanks! :D

Sounds like something to put the collective tfp-brain to...
