I need a nice name for a dog
My parents have just taken delivery of a German Sheperd Dog.
Our family have had many Sheperds over the years, and we have always called them german type/style names. Not nessesarily as in person names, but more "generic" type names. Leibe-harben (harbon?) was one, for instance... I want lots of suggestions, please! The dogs now 9 weeks old and is still being called "puppy"! Please help us find a nice name. The dog? Male, Long hair, black & gold. V E R Y long pedigree, but this dog is purely a family dog, not for breeding. Thanks all.    |
I'm still a fan of "Deeogee" (pronounced "D-O-G")
|
I've always thought it was hard to name pets - you have to see their personality and then thing of something and run with it.
Personally I like historical names, our first cat is named Jefferson and the second was named Meriweather - which is fitting because of the Jefferson/Meriweather-Lewis expedition. Good german names: Helmut Mercedes Wolfgang Rocky Otto Oskar I've also heard 2 syllable names are good for pets because it is easier for them to understand. |
Marvin
Jerry Malcolm Terry Boris Alan Allan Harry |
Baron.
I have known 2 dogs named Baron, a Rottweiler who was a magnificent speciman, and my own mutt ( a Samoyed, Black Lab mix) who was named after the first Baron. It's a cool name, which can be familiarized to Bare, or Bear, of Bear-dog. All of my friends thought it was a cool name too. It's strong, and fits a dog. I've known German Sheppards named: Tochu, Lady and Achmed. |

I call our dog "Flea Fest", more so than her real name..."Ruby". |
Shiloh.....have no clue what it means
|
Striker.. sounds like a good shephard name..
btw. Congrats on the German Shephard.. I love that breed! |
hmmm...angel or roxy are my favorite dog names :)
|
Achtung would be cool. Especially if it's a german shepherd. Imagine the look on a thieve's face when you started yellling "WARNING!" while your dog bears down on him.
DaVinci is another one I like, mostly because I like the man. |
Gunner
With a name like that, he's bound to turn into a hero dog. |
Stay .........as in come 're Stay.
|
Ryot, Bacardi, Target, Cache, Paddy, Almost of the seven dwarf names, Cuervo, Bombay (nice liquor names, eh?), Cider, Harley...there are a million of them :D
|
Before I met her, my wife called her dog .. . . . ...

I think I'm getting a kitten today (if the animal shelter has any) and I'm going to call it Holden (after Holden Caulfield in Catcher in the Rye). I like naming pets after book characters. |
Darwin sounds like a good dog name to me. :)
Or Tonto. |
I've always been a fan of the following names for male dogs: Rex, Sparky, Max, and then just for random sake names from tv shows, or Joe.
Females usually have been named after flowers, Daisy, Lily, Rosie etc |

Hey I like that.... Now for a pronounciation.... But then again... I read that in a lifetime, you will call your pet 30,000 times. Stey... might be a problem when hes on the other side of the park.... maybe: comebehind! ? But thanks for all the suggestions, I'll pass them on. Keep em coming! |

My grandfather had a series of dogs called Gunner. While discussing events in the family sometimes we refer to the Gunner timeline like: "Remember when so and so went into the air force? You know around Gunner III?" I've had a series of German Shepherds. We followed the biblical theme. Judah, Shiloh, Samson, Delilah and etc. My uncle named his German Shepherd Shiva. If I get to name another German Shepherd, I'm going to name him Schultz after the guy on Hogan's Heroes. Possibly Klink. |
KOJAK
it sounds like a tough, crime fighting name :) |
Phineas. It's a great name for a dog.
|
Max, its a killer name for a Dog. Thats what our cross german sheperd / doberman was named
|
Go with George Constanza and name him "Seven."
|

Good German names....
Nacht-night Geist-Ghost I had a German Shepard named Spike and my girlfriend has one now named Killer. I told her if we ever get one together I'm going to name it Spiller. |
Good German names (with their meanings) from BabyNames.com:
Braun, Conrad, Decker, Hank (like H-ah-nk, Ruler of the Home), Kaiser, Sprague, Ulmar (Wolf), Varick (Honorable defender), Vilmos (Steady), or Zelig. Oh I wish I had another puppy prancing around the house to name!! Good luck! |
Blitzkreig (Blitz for short)
Mauser |
Call him Fido
|
How `bout Pickles?
|
I named my dog Indy. Its not german, but it is people-friendly. Great name!
There are definitely some good names on here, I'm going to have to write them down for when I have a kid or something :) |
Gunther is my Grandma's dogs name. He's a shepard that my mom had given to her as a pup from a friend who worked at a pet store. He had a heart palpataion (spelling is awful sorry) and had to have major surgery to fix it. This dog couldn't be sold, so my mom made a few phone calls and placed him with my Grandma and she had the surgery taken care of immediatly. This dog is HUGE for a shepard (well for any of the ones I've ever seen) and is a mass of awesome doggyness. I love his name, and it's fitting for him somehow! :)
I also like Baron a lot too :) |
Rolph maybe?
|
i've always wanted to name my next dog stains..."come stains"...hahahaa
