Castro's tumble
 

Anyone see Castro fall on his face? Guess he broke an arm and a leg. The video, I'm sorry to say, was kind of hilarious. I can't seem to find it, though.

Yeah i saw that video too, it WAS hilarious... no question. All I could think of was him going "Whoops-a-daisy!!" then hitting the floor. Haha.

I busted up laughing, first quality news on tv in awhile.

I'm probably too young to think of Castro as an evil tyrant, or as a real enemy. I know the history, the relations between Cuba and the US, etc., but I just see him as an old man and I felt sorry for him when he fell. The fact that he was hurt so badly in such a mild fall just reinforced that notion of him as a weak, old man.

If I saw Hitler fall like that I wouldn't laugh, but I wouldn't feel sorry for him either.

am strugling also to see how watching an elderly man injure himself is funny. And Castro is no Hitler.

If you watch the video it looks like there is a step on the stage that he didn't see, so when he took a step out and didn't hit ground when he expected it he just tumbled over.

Broken bones at that age are very very serious.

It's not funny to see Castro fall and hurt himself because it's no longer "cool" to look down on him as a tyrannt. It's "cool" to look down upon Bush as one so thusly it's funny.

Personally if I saw any world leader bite the dust like that I'd be laughing be it the Pope or Kim Jung Il. I'd especially laugh if that person lived a life of being the perpetual hardhead and hardass like Castro.

I don't think its that funny. How old is Castro now, like in his late 70's or early 80's?

I dunno...thirty years ago, I'd have been laughing my ass off. Now, however, he's not so much the evil dictatorial tyrant that he was, so much as he is just a sad tired old man trying desperately to hold together that which he has built...however misguided.
I guess I have two schools of thought here.
1.) He's not going to be around much longer. Allow him a small measure of dignity.
2.) We all laughed uproariously when Ford fell down the steps of Air Force One. Well...those of us that were alive at the time did. I guess this is not that much different, except that I, at least, have done a little growing and maturing since then.

Heh... I always liked Fidel. He kicked the mob out of Havana and told the corrupt U.S. Government to go fuck itself.

Do you laugh at young people falling down?

From a purely comedic perspective, it's classic physical comedy and therefore funny to see.

From a realistic standpoint, I have a grandmother who is elderly and falls a lot, which I do not find funny since she has received some fairly serious injuries from her falls.

When I laugh, I'm not laughing <i>at</i> Fidel, I'm laughing <i>about</i> him.

Thanks. I think this applies very well. Yes, it's sad. Yes, he really hurt himself. But the video is funny. Not trying to make a statement or anything. It's just...wow, what a fall. It's ok to laugh; doesn't mean you're "not grown up" or that you hate him.

If you ever see someone fall like that, just on the street, stepping off the curb for instance, it's just FUNNY. It's human nature! I'm just happy it wasn't me, I've fallen like that, the inital adrenaline rush is crazy, then you're on the ground and your leg is all bent backwards and cockamaimie.

Sucks that he broke his knee, but he could be any person on the street, old, young, etc. it would still be funny to me!

I don't laugh when anyone fall in real life, only in movies (accompanied by wacky sound effects :D ). As for Fidel falling, while I don't find it funny, I don't pitty him either.

Hmmm, I don't find this funny at all. Sure, back when he caused trouble, but lately he's just a tired old man watching his dreams slip away.

As for Bush being worse than hitler, I'm sorry, but you've got some twisted ideas of history and right and wrong.

i'm planning a trip to Havana for New Years Eve 2009, and for him to be there for the 50th anniversary of the revolution would be brilliant.
if he passes away before then, and the floodgates are opened for an American commercial invasion, it just won't be the same... in fact, i'd cancel the trip.

I was downtown this past summer and saw a guy pushing a large woman in a wheelchair. The front wheel of the chair fell in a crack in the pavement, and the chair very nearly fell forward. The guy had to pull on the chair with all his might to keep the lady from falling face first into the ground. Then the guy spit in anger at the crack in the pavement. I had to bite my cheek to keep from laughing. Now, its not that I thought it was funny, really, but that was my reaction to this crazy non-fatal thing happening. My desire to laugh was not an indication of malice towards these people. Now, Castro falls and people laugh, maybe they laugh because there is such a great divide between the image of Castro as the revolutionary leader and Castro the klutz.

I hope this made sense. I'm pretty tired.

*edit- I myself would think this Castro fall was funny if he didn't break his bones. Knowing that he broke his bones made it not laughable to me. It just made me cringe.

That's pretty disgusting that you're defending the man who made a mockery of our integrity, economy, and the lives of the soldiers pledged to defend our country.

Sure, it's not 6 million, but these ones sure hit closer to home.

On topic, Castro was a pretty dangerous man. For those of you who learned anything in high school, Castro allowed the USSR to place nuclear missiles on Cuba which I believe is only 30 miles from Florida (off the top of my head). This was at the hieght of the Cold War. These missiles had the potential to kill several hundred thousand Americans and were capable of hitting many U.S. cities. Infact, the missiles were being pointed at the U.S.

Castro put the U.S. in a pretty dangerous positition. Infact, many of you who defend Castro now are probably democrats. Here's a little neat fact: during the Cuban Missile Crisis, JFK was president. JFK was a democrat too! Just thought you'd want to know that cool fact. ;)

Hitler was also responsible for a lot more American lives than Bush has been as well. Not to mention the millions of Jews,Poles,Russians, and any other type of person he felt he didn't like that he gassed and bombed to death.
While I have no love lost for Bush's war to rank him with HITLER is seriously down playing how bad Hitler truly was. This really scares me that within 100 years Hitler might cease to be possibly the most evil man in history to being just a misunderstood and proud German leader. Simply because people will try to compare one guy they don't like to another one that they think is evil while at the same time not realizing that the comparison likely will never be accurate especially not saying someone was worse than Hitler was. This to me is like saying some clown in 10 years when they kill a couple of people is worse than Charles Manson or Jeffery Dahmer. Sooner or later if enough people are called worse than those guys the sheer level of depravity and evil those men stooped to will be lessened and forgotten some what and that's not good.

No idea how Bush or Hitler found their way into this thread, but let's please kindly show them the exit...

Kruschev placed the missiles there in response to the US placing nuclear missiles in Turkey. This was before really accurate ICBMs and the only way you could target cities was by having missiles relatively close.

Whilst I'm not defending the deployment of nuclear weapons, I find it laughable that you would condemn the Soviet Union (and Cuba) for doing exactly what America had done.

Cuba is 90 miles from Florida.

My hub was in the Navy then and was an 'ear in Key West'. That's all I can say or else he'll have to kill me :) Most of you 'young 'uns' have no idea how close the USA came to war during those days. Thank God for President Kennedy!! Be glad your kids aren't needing to learn how to be hiding under school desks = to be prepared for nuclear weapons pointed at them. It was a real threat.

Just a little history for those who skipped class that day...

I also think it's interesting that you say "Thank God for President Kennedy", implying that he averted a nuclear war.

The facts are that the US Navy was ordered to attack the ships if they proceeded. If such an attack occurred, it was likely that the Soviets would retaliate. That would have probably escalated into war and then probably nuclear war.

One thing the US forces didn't realize is that the Soviet forces on Cuba already had tactical nuclear weapons. The Soviet General has gone on record as saying that he would have used them if attacked by US forces, without having to confirm with the Kremlin.

Anyway, all of this is historical fact. But to say that Kennedy averted a war, when his orders were those that would have precipitated it, is a bit disengenous. Don't get me wrong. I think JFK was probably one of the best Presidents the US ever had. But it was Nikita Kruschev who averted a conflict by ordering his ships around.

Both men should be considered when discussing the Cuban Missile Crisis.

I don't know everything about history. And I certainly meant no disrespect to you, your husband or the late President Kennedy. Indeed, as I said, I think he was one of the best Presidents the US ever had.

I was simply pointing out that it wasn't Kennedy alone who averted nuclear war. If anything he engaged in brinksmanship and it was Kruschev who backed down. That's all.

Funny. I am not from the US but I know about the Cold War and the Cuban Missile Crisis. It is just strange that most history books forget to mention the US missiles in Turkey. History is written by the winners and a good, old black and white picture of good and evil is much easier to accept.
