Going to Mexico!
Well, I'm off on a cruise to Mexico next week. I never have any luck picking up souveniers; so I want your advice. What could a college kid who wants to get something memorable from Mexico pick up?
Recommendations involving Tequila and crap I can put in my apartment are always welcome. |
Sombrero and a poncho. Siesta whenever you like, where ever you like for the rest of your life with it.
|
SOmbrero to hang on the wall.
a tourism poster or tequlla ad that you can frame (a disease would be a really bad thing to pick up and remember for the rest of your life :) |
a senorita

If you go to a flea market, haggle, haggle, haggle!!! Every single store sells exactly the same stuff. No shit. Went to Cancun for my honeymoon (not sure what city you will stop off at) but we went to the flea market and seriously got "raped" by all the vendors. Their prices are so damn high, it is basically so you can barter.
Don't get any hot sauce. Holy mama! edited cuz i said barter, when i meant haggle (duh me) |

Sombrero is a definite. Whatever you buy from the markets.. make sure you haggle. Prices are high.. you are supposed to haggle em down. |

cynthetiq's got the right idea for what to buy.
If you know spanish, you can get things for extremely cheap!! crack some joke about the cute ass on the chick walking in front of the store, get the clerk to laugh and start a conversation, and then ask if you can buy whatever you like, and then say "oh, I only have this much money", they'll almost always gladly come down to that price. My brother and I have done this too many times... |
multicolor blankets are exquisite and theyre long-lasting and the colors stay brilliant.
small figure sculptures done in the ancient style. and yes - the key is negotiating price. speaking Spanish earns an instant negotiating edge. |
Look for some gourds or pottery items.
