Just think of the things that we don't know about.

They were OLD underpants. I'm sure they were washed in between then and now. Sure, it sounds gross, but you also have to remember that you do reuse underwear yourself. You throw it in the washer when its down, then toss them back on your butt the next week.

Then you cannot forget that dishrags are notoriously dirty things. Stale water, bacteria, whatever is laying around is on those things. I fail to see the difference between the two.

at least they were cleaning the dishes...

there are lots of places that I've eaten around the world that reused garnishes.. you know. the parsley and such... well sometimes if you didn't eat the veggies that came with your burger.. they came back to the next person that ordered it.

which looks worse stains on a dishrag washing tables or stains on underwear washing tables...
yeah, its all in the head, but it is the thought that counts

hm. i use old underwear as kitchen rags too...i don't think this is so bad--of course they MUST have washed them before...with bleach...right?

the funny thing is, we only know what they find.

Who doubted SARS started in China? That's pretty disgusting though but I'm not surprised. Old clothing, rags, etc. are often used in Chinese culture as wash clothes.

I can think of worse things.

If I were to play devil's advocate for a moment- aren't the clothese worn under your clothes potentially the cleanest thing you're putting in the laundry? At least underwear usually isn't subjected to anything other than our skin. I'm not naive enough to dismiss the issue of stains. I just think it would be a completely different situation if they were using, lets say, old aprons. Having worked in bar that had a kitchen, I can tell you that plenty of things left on the aprons before laundering were just as nasty as anything that could be left on underwear. Little knicks that drew blood are clotted on the apron, wiping your nose or sneezing are some examples I can think of off hand. Hell, the napkins on the table are laundered the same way and plenty of us customers blow our nose, or wipe god knows what on them. I can't imagine anyone would bat an eye if they used old napkins instead of underwear.
I'm not saying it's the same thing. I just think they're both pretty gross- but we only care about underwear because, well, it's underwear.

now thats disgusting. i use old undies as rags for cleaning, but not for doing the dishes.

This is nothing compared to what you'd get in an English fish and chip shop or an American McDonalds. 15 year olds in a deadend job at McDs, mastubating in burgers out of sheer brainless MALICE. Seems like the Chinese place was kinda just being economical.

Pretty hypocritical for the west to point a finger when it comes to hygiene, in some ways we're just as filthy.

I am really glad I read this after I got back from China. I had one meal in Chongking, which is the next big town east of Chengu. (Chengdu is where the pandas we have on loan here in Atlanta came from).

I have some knowledge of travel medicine concerns and this really is not that big a deal, when you think about it objectively. The amount of transmission of coloform bacteria from one colon to another's mouth is amazing in this country, and it is far greater in less developed countries. Dirty dish rags are a significant source of contamination in the best of circumstances. What I really find encouraging, is that there are health inspectors that closed the place. Many countries do not have that system in place.

I would encourage anyone travelling to check out CDC.gov for recomendations. Furthermore, if you are going to Subsaharan Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia, or Central America, I think you should really consider seeing your doctor, or a travel medicine specialist. If you are going for work, get your employer to cover it, because health insurance will not.

I know that this is a little off topic, but it is one of my little soapbox topics.
