Where were you when.....?

Answer as many as you remember.

Where were you when....?

a) JFK was shot
b) Apollo 11 landed on the moon
c) John Lennon was shot
d) the Berlin Wall fell
e) the 9/11 attacks occurred

A) I was only 3 and I have no memory of it.
B) Watching it on TV at home with my parents and siblings.
C) Came in from a date and turned on Monday Night Football just in time to hear Howard Cosell make the announcement.
D) No memory of the actual moment I heard.
E) Driving to work. The radio interrupted for a special report at the same time that my cell phone started ringing like crazy.

Cynthetiq 05-09-2003 06:52 AM

a) a sparkle in my father's eye
b) just a baby
c) watching Return of the Pink Panther while mom and dad played Mah jong...
d) working and watching the TV
e) walking to work in Times Square when first plane hit. Was at my desk watching TV seeing the 2nd plane hit.

Sticky 05-09-2003 07:03 AM

a) JFK was shot. I thought he died in a plane crash
b) Something landed on the moon
c) John Lennon? I don't listen to country music

OK enough with the stupid trying to be funny answers.
a) My parents had not even begun dating
b) Still year away from being born
c) I have no recollection of anything in the year 1980
d) Not sure where I was but I remember seeing it on TV many many times. An interesting note, I remember where I was when I watched the Pink Floyd The Wall concert that took place in Germany right after the reunification. I watched it live from Israel.
e) I was at work when I first heard that it happened. I was actually in my car parking when it happened.

Liquor Dealer 05-09-2003 07:10 AM

a) JFK was shot - in a Freshman English class.

b) Apollo 11 landed on the moon - Working for a police department in a suburb of Oklahoma City

c) John Lennon was shot - Teaching School in Kansas

d) the Berlin Wall fell - Still teaching school in Kansas

e) the 9/11 attacks occurred - At my store waiting for the beer trucks to show up

It may seen strange to me but the 9-11 attacks are the only one of these incidents that really seem to matter to me. I am several hundred miles away from being a JFK fan - He was a piss-poor excuse for a president that has become much larger than life because he was assassinated - History would not have been kind to this man had he finished out his presidency.

The moon landing was a great accomplishment in proving that it could be done - Has it changed anything? Have we benefitted in any way from this? No.

John Lennon - never did care for the Beatles and he was married to a total freak.

The Berlin Wall finally coming down was the finale to a lot of change. It is symbolic of the fall of communism and beginnining of the end of the Cold War. It is mainly symbolic - like the statue of Saddam coming down.

The 9-11 attack hit me rigfht square in the gut. It is probably the most memorable event in my memory. I will never forget - or forgive.

splck 05-09-2003 07:22 AM

A) JFK - I was still sucking on my mom's tits.
B) Moon landing - My dad told me to get out of the pool and come watch the tv.
C) John Lennon - Driving back from a mall with some friends and heard it on the raidio....should have been Ringo!
D) Berlin Wall - Wasn't a big deal to me, so I don't remember.
E) 9/11 - Watched for a bit on the news and went to work.

Some of these answers raise some interesting points. I have a crystal clear memory of watching Robert Kennedy's assasination live on TV one afternoon, but it didn't happen that way; it was not live, and it was at night.

I wonder how many other things get twisted that way in our memories. In "Mr. Holland's Opus," he drives home from work in the middle of the day when Lennon gets shot - which actually happened near midnight. Weird.

It's because of that, I'm not sure of the time of day when I watched the moon landing, and whether or not I saw it live.

niccoli 05-09-2003 07:30 AM

a) JFK was shot - not born
b) Apollo 11 landed on the moon - WAY not born
c) John Lennon was shot - not born
d) the Berlin Wall fell - in school.....don't remember exactly what I was doing....probably trying to play doctor with a hotty in 2nd grade :)
e) the 9/11 attacks occurred - At my apartment, just getting ready to head to my Windows 2000 class in college....we went home way early that day

spectre 05-09-2003 08:49 AM

a) Wasn't born yet.
b) Wasn't born yet.
c) Wasn't born yet.
d) Was about 8 and saw it on tv.
e) Was getting ready for class when my aunt called me and told me to turn on the tv. Spent the whole day at school staring out the window looking at the Sears Tower (my mom works on the 80th floor).

Funny thing is, on September 11, I remember writing an essay late at night and getting a call from my father who told me to turn on the TV. That's right, 11pm at night and my memory isn't faulty...you figure it out.

Needless to say, I didn't get much sleep, and went outside at 3am to see great stormclouds on the horizon.

This thread is going to date a few people.

a) Wasn't born yet.
b) Wasn't born yet.
c) A few weeks old.
d) Don't remember exactly but a friend's parents had a chunk of the wall encased in lucite. Pretty interesting kinda souvenir
e) As written above.

Grey Death 05-09-2003 02:37 PM

a) JFK was shot
Waiting to be born.... about 2 years later!

b) Apollo 11 landed on the moon
Watching it on television in my living room. I was about 4 and the clearest thing I remember about it was my father feelings that this was REALLY important. It started a long love of space, and space travel. I still try to tune in whenever there's a launching (and lets hope we get back to it soon, and safely)

c) John Lennon was shot
Sleeping. I had fallen asleep with the radio on and when I woke up I actually thought I'd dreamt it. Wasn't too long before the DJ set me right.

d) the Berlin Wall fell
Working. Watched the clips when I got home.

e) the 9/11 attacks occurred
Working. I had just gotten into work, turned on the radio and within about 2 minutes the host (I primarily listen to NPR) broke from format to announce what had just happened. They were calling it an accident at that point, but just a few minutes later, with the second hit, we all knew what was up.

fearofmear 05-09-2003 02:44 PM

a)-c) I wasn't born yet

d) I remember seeing it on TV when my mom was making dinner.

e) I was doing some physical chemistry homework at the school library when I decided to walk over to the student union and get a snack to eat. I saw all of the students huddles over by the TVs and wondered what was going on. I watched for myself and ended up not even turning the homework assignment.

Atropos4 05-09-2003 03:11 PM

a) JFK was shot
b) Apollo 11 landed on the moon
c) John Lennon was shot
d) the Berlin Wall fell
e) the 9/11 attacks occurred
------------------------------------------------

a and b -Not born
c- In my mom's belly waiting to be born
d- I don't remember if I watched it live but I remember my dad and I watching it fall on tv.
e- At home sleeping..Was actually on vacation from work..
My sister came over and woke us up and told us to turn on the tv..I will never forget. I just sat there for a long time with my hand over my mouth in disbelief. Later that night I went outside to view a jetless sky..very strange..

The_Dude 05-09-2003 03:14 PM

i can only remember 911, i was on my way to school.

good morning america was on, and they had footage of this, but they did not know what happened.

they thought it was a fire or something.

G_Whiz 05-09-2003 03:55 PM

a) JFK was shot
In my Sophomore English class in High School.

b) Apollo 11 landed on the moon
I watched it on TV and cheered when they announced that "The Eagle has landed".

c) John Lennon was shot
I actually didn't hear about until I read my morning paper the next day. Then I turned on the TV news.

d) the Berlin Wall fell
I came home from work and watched it on the evening news. I was totally fascinated because I had a teacher in High School who worked for the CIA in the Berlin. He had plenty of stories to tell about the East and West relations, or lack thereof.

e) the 9/11 attacks occurred
I was at home getting ready for work. The TV news interrupted their broadcast to get the network feed about an "accident" in NY. Then I watched the second plane hit.

The Kennedy assassination, the Moon Landing and the 9/11 attacks had the greatest impacts on me. Of those, I watched two on live on TV.

rockwaldo 05-09-2003 05:03 PM

a) not born yet
b) not born yet
c) not born yet
d) At a football match

b) NA
c) Not old enough to understand.
d) Not old enough to be interested but saw it on telly, and was pissed 'cause there was no A-Team or whatever.
e) At work, got ready for DR, company I work for is a major player in the FS sector and our NY HQ was evac'd and closed due to damage. - As an aside a mail went out to everyone to tell us to stop watching it on Cisco IPTV 'cause it was using up all the networks bandwith....

i wasn't born for a&b.

c) i think i was home watching cartoons. i remember my mom being very upset.

d) 9th grade, i think.

e) in the lobby of my office bldg, where they have a TV, just coming in to work. i saw the second plane hit, and we knew then that it was not an accident. we were supposed to downtown to go to downtown DC for a satellite trade show, but the city was locked down and obviously it was all cancelled. we have an air traffic control display of the US where i work and it's normally speckled with white dots, and it was very spooky to see all of them disappear when the planes were grounded. the entire company was gathered around the big-screen TV on our floor for the rest of the day, and we all went home early.

N/A

N/A

c) John Lennon was shot
One of those things I don't remember

d) the Berlin Wall fell
Another of those things I don't remember

e) the 9/11 attacks occurred
At work in the school's library. We had the TV on from the very beginning (we always watched the news first thing in the morning). As we were watching the live news feed, we all saw the second plane. At first we didn't know what we were seeing as we were all in disbelief. Being so close to the events, we had plenty of students with parents who worked in NYC, so you can imagine the thoughts going through their minds.

I think I'd like to add to this list of "where were you when..."

f) the first attack on the World Trade Center occured?
g) the Gulf War started?
h) the US Space Shuttle Challenger accident occured?
i) the US Space Shuttle Columbia accident occured?

f) at work in the bank listening to the radio.
g) at home watching TV with my boyfriend at the time. I remember being worried about him being drafted.. damn I wish they had reinstated the draft back then ;)
h) home from school, sick. Watched the launch on TV like I knew my classmates were doing.
i) Just waking up, turned on the TV and it was all over the news.

ratbastid 05-10-2003 03:34 PM

a) JFK was shot

My parents hadn't met yet.

b) Apollo 11 landed on the moon

My parents weren't even trying to have kids yet.

c) John Lennon was shot

I was 4. No idea where I was.

d) the Berlin Wall fell

I don't remember this like an incident, but I know it was happening the summer before my freshman year of college. My parents took a trip to Germany and came back with a couple chunks of Wall that they'd bought on the street.

e) the 9/11 attacks occurred

At work. Sometime about when the first tower fell, somebody ran home and brought in a little TV, and we all crowded around and watched.

There's an item missing from this list! Who else remembers where they were when they heard about the Challenger disaster?

I was walking out of History class. I think I was in 9th grade. A classmate was standing in the hall, and I noticed he had a cut on his chin. I asked him what happened to him, and he said "It blew up." I said, "Naah." He said, "Yeah!" and made a "blowing up" noise.

I didn't know what he was talking about, but I assumed it had to do with the cut on his chin.

Later in the day there was an all-school assembly, and I found out what he meant.

Double D 05-10-2003 06:48 PM

Where were you when....?

a) JFK was shot
Can't remember the precise moment- I was just turning four years old- but I remember feeling sad for Caroline & John Jr. when I saw them in the funeral procession.

b) Apollo 11 landed on the moon
Watched it with the extended family, gathered round a little black & white TV at our cottage in Canada, on the only channel that we could pick up. I remember being really excited that I was allowed to stay up past my bedtime to view the coverage.

c) John Lennon was shot
This was really painful - still is. I was 20 yrs old and a beach bum/student in southern CA, pulling a shift as an ice cream jockey at Haagen Daaz. We had the tunes playing, when at about 11 am they announced that Lennon had been shot dead the night before. It felt like a punch in the gut- I went through the rest of my shift like a robot. When I finished work, I fell apart- the tears wouldn't stop. I still can't listen to the Lennon version of *Imagine.* I cry every time.

d) the Berlin Wall fell
I'm bit chagrined to not recall where I was.

e) the 9/11 attacks occurred
Just waking up- my husband called me from work as he listened to reports as the attacks were occuring. He said a plane had just flown into the WTC. I turned the TV on just in time to see the second plane hit. That image was seared into my brain the first time I saw it. I absolutely did not need to see it played
repeatedly and eventually tore myself away from the tube sometime that evening,

E) I was home, sleeping in after having pulled a midnight shift the night before. My gf at the time called and told me to turn on CNN immediately. I walked out, turned it on and sat on my phone with her in silence watching. About 5 minutes later the second plane hit. It was a completely surreal day...

H) I was in elementary school and several classrooms had been combined to watch the launch on TV since we'd been doing space studies for our school-wide project (what are those things called again?). When it happen my teacher made a sickening suprised sound and nobody looked away from the TV for what felt like hours. Eventually one of the teachers turned it off.

I remember sitting on the sofa arm for hours watching the scenes unfold. Strangly enough, i was watching a documentary with a friend of mind who is a paramedic in london, and he was naming half the paramedics in all the stills, and explaining what happened to loads of the injured. It was comforting to know that all the images that stick in my mind are of people who survived.

a) 9/22/63 was a little less than 20 years before I was born, had I been alive, I would have been devistated. JFK was a very interesting man.
b) July 20, 1969, still not born yet. I must say, this is still one of my proudest acheivments as an American. It's facinating that we were able to do the unthinkable and have a human being on a body in space.
c) 12/8/1980, well getting closer, but still not born yet. Lennon is one of my favorite figures in the modern anti-war movement. Truely, he was a great man.
d) I watched over and over the Berlin Wall falling with my grandfather. He told me stories about what the implications of the wall were and the fact that it was finalyl being torn down had atrue and echoing meaning accross time.
e) I was getting ready for school when I saw the second strike inturrupt whatever I was watching on TV. I watched for about an hour, and then went to school. Everyone was talking about it, and people were crying and such. I volunteered to speak over the intercom system to the school (the student elected president was home 'sick', probably afraid of his duties). I opnly spoke for about 15 minutes, but I think I got my point across: "today is about healing".
f) I was on vacation with my vamily in Monterey, I think.
g) I was in school, but I had to have the situation explained to me a few times. I still don't really get it.
h) Home. Too young to remember, though I've read about it.
i) Home.

e) I was a freshman at DePaul University in Chicago. I was sleeping in that day, since I didn't have an early class, and woke up when one of my roommate's friends burst in, screaming, "Someone blew up New York!!!!" I ran to the lounge, where I found several other people watching the TV. I arrived just in time to see the second tower fall, and I spent the rest of the day donating blood and walking around Lincoln Park, as all classes were cancelled.

Ample 07-03-2006 06:10 PM

A-D) wasnt born or too young
e) the 9/11 attacks occurred - I had alread had news radio on at work. I still remember all the wrong info that came out right away. At first they said that a sesna(SP?) hit the building. After the second plane hit I went out to have a smoke. Looking in the sky and wondering if the city that I worked in (Wilmington, DE) was next, almost all the major banks are HQed here.
f) WTC I- Too Young
g) Gulf War One- Glued to the TV in my family room. I have those missles shooting aross the sky through night vision burned into my head.
h) the US Space Shuttle Challenger- We watched it Live in my 3rd grade class. Everyone cried. Im pretty sure we went home early.
i) the US Space Shuttle Columbia- At work listening to news radio.

Martian 07-03-2006 06:25 PM

I'm one of the young 'uns. I was alive for the Berlin wall, but too young to remember or care. As to the WTC attacks, I know that one. It was my eighteenth birthday and I was skiving off school. I woke up around 10:00, came downstairs and mum had it on in the living room. I watched the events from then on as they unfolded.

ngdawg 07-03-2006 06:48 PM

a) JFK was shot
4th grade. The 7th graders were watching/listening to his Dallas visit in class and came running down the halls of the school, shouting into every classroom "The President's been shot!" My teacher thought they were playing a cruel stunt. We got sent home soon after.
b) Apollo 11 landed on the moon
Outside playing with a visiting friend, but then, just as the sun was going down, we went inside to watch.
c) John Lennon was shot
Monday night. Had just gone to bed, spouse was watching MNF when it got interrupted with the news. I cried myself to sleep. Work the next morning was surreal for everyone.
d) the Berlin Wall fell
Don't remember where I was, etc. Just that it was about fukkin time. Seeing the news highlighting families divided for decades was cool
e) the 9/11 attacks occurred
At work at the middle school. At first, a few teachers put on their tv's in their classrooms to see the coverage of the attacks and the tv's in the lounges were on. I was in one of the lounges watching as they tumbled. Two teachers had direct connections; one, her husband. He called in sick that day. But the other one had a son who worked there and after the collapse, ran out of her room screaming "My David!!!!" and she had to be taken into a secluded area. As it turned out, David had overslept and was on his way in at the time of the attacks.
My cousin was a NYFD lieutenant and was just heading home from his shift when he got the call. He lost a LOT of friends that day. After the clean-up he retired.

a) JFK was shot
Tiny glint in my fathers eye
b) Apollo 11 landed on the moon
Slightly larger glint in my fathers eye
c) John Lennon was shot
Still a glint in my fathers eye
d) the Berlin Wall fell
I was 4, no real recollection of this.
e) the 9/11 attacks occurred
I was getting ready for school, my junior year. Each morning i watched CNN while I cooked break fast, so I watched the initial aftermath of the first, and the second live. at the time of the first collapse, I was in my car, listening to it on the radio, I lost control of my car when it collapsed, and did a 270 on the freeway. My first class was American history, so we ended up going to the library and watching the news and surfed the internet for news all morning.

Gilda 07-03-2006 08:32 PM

a) JFK was shot Let's see, 1963, right? My mom was seven at the time. I doubt she remembers where she was.

b) Apollo 11 landed on the moonAlmost a decade before I was born.

c) John Lennon was shotHmmm. I was alive for this one, but only about four or five, I think. I doubt if it would have meant anything special to me.

d) the Berlin Wall fell: I was 13, so probably in front of the tv in my living room.

e) the 9/11 attacks occurred:

One of my students asked me first hour if we could watch it on the tv in the room. I didn't know what he was talking about, as I hadn't seen the news yet--I typically don't watch the news in the morning. I turned on the tv, and there was extensive coverage on every channel, and that's what we did that day, watch tv. So, about 7:50, in my classroom. That would have been close to 11:00 Eastern time, so both towers had fallen by then. I'm grateful that I wasn't watching as it happened.

f) the first attack on the World Trade Center occured? It would have been about 5:45 California time, so probably just getting out of bed.

g) the Gulf War started?Watching tv in my living room.

h) the US Space Shuttle Challenger accident occured? At school, fifth grade, I think.

i) the US Space Shuttle Columbia accident occured? Watching tv at home.

b-not born

c- not even sure what year it happened in, in any event unaware of any memory of it

d- in Jr high- remember going hiking with a friend after school, and having watched some of it at school, remarking that everything was changing now- he did not get it-

E - was asleep, as I worked nights at the time- but was woken up by phone calls from the various friends and relatives, and turned on the tv to see every channel covering it- went to fuel my nearly empty car and there were gas lines- and then drove into work to see every single restraunt and gas station marquee with a patriotic slogan- and then being ordered to patroll the roof of the building I was assigned to guard (a factory) (i was a security guard working for a complete moron) in case terrorists tried to climb up there to do....something.. )did I mention we had GLASS doors- and windows, and loading docks with unlocked doors oh, yeah, thats right I worked for a moron......

a) JFK was shot - I was 1 year old, so I don't remeber the actual incident. I do, however, remember watching the funeral procession on TV.

b) Apollo 11 landed on the moon - I was glued to my families black and white television set. Even then I was a "space nut".

c) John Lennon was shot - I heard it the next day, on a news report over my car radio, on my way to work assembling Egg McMuffins.

d) the Berlin Wall fell - Saw it on the evening news. I thought it odd that after all those years in the cold war...it was over...just like that.

e) the 9/11 attacks occurred - Mrs. ORights called me up at work and told me that a plane had just crashed into the WTC. I asked..."On purpose?"

f) the first attack on the World Trade Center occured? - Saw it on the evening news.

g) the Gulf War started? - The company that I worked for was hosting a meeting of a professional organization. The news broke and the meeting abruptly ended as everyone watched the news.

h) the US Space Shuttle Challenger accident occured? - I was in the Air Force, and was just getting ready to go to work when the news broke. As I recall, I was in the process of lacing my boots.

i) the US Space Shuttle Columbia accident occured? - Watching cartoons with my second amendment. He was highly annoyed that his shows were not on.

I'm digging all these old threads coming back up. I didn't get to answer the addenda questions, so here I go.

Visitng my parents. Normally, my folks left their kitchen door wide open because they were known for having a parade of folks "drop by" at suppertime. This particular night, Grancey and I walked up to the door and it was LOCKED?!? When finally I got my mother to open the door and I asked her why it was locked, she said it was because "the war just started." She was dead serious; she locked her door because the U.S. was bombing Kuwait. I didn't laugh out loud, but I was DYING inside....

At home preparing a poster for a band I was playing in (Saucy Jack). I was sitting on the floor with all my material scattered around me and watching it unfold live on TV in front of me. The phone rang and it was a secretary with the Board of Education at a school system where I'd just applied for a job (I'd just gotten my teacher's certification in December) and they wanted me to come in for an interview. I would end up getting the job, but the secretary had no idea what was going on when I tried to explain to her about the shuttle.

Heading to a storage unit that was 30 miles away in order to clean it out and listening to the truck radio.

I'll tell you where I was when I _heard_ these things, not necessarily where I was when they happened:

a) JFK was shot

It was my birthday. I was eight years old. I was in school, playing on the playground at recess when our teacher came out to tell us that the president had been shot. She looked upset, so we acted grave. When she went back inside, we started playing again. After recess, she made us put our heads down on our desks for a while, but I think it was for her, not us.

Later, I was peeved that I couldn't see my favorite TV shows on my birthday because of all the special programming. But I did get a phonograph as a present. Kids. What ya gonna say?

b) Apollo 11. In the TV/stereo section of a department store with my parents; I was 12, I think. A big, silent crowd formed around the television and watched patiently. There was tension during the LEM descent. I don't remember any kind of big cheer when the lander touched down; but I do remember, when the "Eagle has landed" message came through, seeing Walter Cronkite lose it on camera. All he could say was "Golly."

c) John Lennon was shot

In a Tower Records in Concord, California. I have a horrible confession to make; I always though that John Lennon was George Harrison, and that George Harrison was John Lennon. I had them completely mixed up. It took his death to straighten me out.

d) the Berlin Wall fell

Don't remember; didn't make any impression. The conclusion was forgone; the falling wall was just the exclamation point on the sentence.

e) the 9/11 attacks occurred

I was out bicycling for exercise before work. When I came home my wife had the TV on -- unusual for her in the morning, but she'd picked up the news off the Internet. And I watched that plane slam into that tower again and again.

f) the first attack on the World Trade Center occured?

No idea. It was just some bomb plot in New York. I'm on the West Coast. It was too small and too far away.

g) the Gulf War started?

No idea. The buildup to war took months; it was obvious that war was coming, so the actual commencement of hostilities doesn't stand out.

h) the US Space Shuttle Challenger accident occured?

The shuttle program was still relatively new, and Americans had a lot of emotion invested in it. I was at work, on the second floor of a two story office. The president of our company ran upstairs and shouted "The Challenger has exploded!" Everybody ran downstairs to see the footage on his TV. I stayed upstairs, alone. I wanted to process the tragedy in my mind before I let TV hit me in the face with it. I avoided seeing the explosion footage for two days, until I was finally ready.

i) the US Space Shuttle Columbia accident occured?

Saw it at home on TV. Didn't affect me nearly as much. I, like many Americans, have distanced myself from the shuttle program. It's no longer America's future; it's just another government program that's not going to accomplish very much. I got a lot more out of the X-Prize-winning flight of Burt Rutan's SpaceShip One.

One other thing I remember well, as an old-time resident of the Bay Area: where I was when Mayor George Moscone of San Francisco was shot. This was in '78 or '79. I was in a print shop in Dixon, 90 miles away from SF, picking up a job. And even the folks in Dixon were shocked. The SF Bay Area has no leader, but in those days the Mayor of San Francisco was the most well-known politician in the region, the symbolic head of the region and its ambassador to the world. That's no longer true, but it was then, and we were all affected. I can't tell you when I heard about Jonestown, but I do remember Moscone's death, so that tells you something.

snowy 07-04-2006 10:21 AM

a) JFK was shot--not born yet
b) Apollo 11 landed on the moon--not born yet
c) John Lennon was shot--not born yet

d) the Berlin Wall fell

I remember watching the wall fall on CNN. We were big into watching CNN in those days. Before the advent of other cable news outlets, they were the only place you could get this stuff live.

e) the 9/11 attacks occurred

I woke up at 5:30 PST that morning because I had cut my finger pretty badly on a meat slicer at work the night before, and my mom wanted my dad to look at it before he left for work. Once up, I couldn't go back to sleep, so I settled down on the couch to watch the early morning news with my mom. Shortly before 6am, the national news interrupted the local broadcast with the word that a "small plane" had crashed into one of the towers. I watched live on TV as the second plane hit the WTC. I'll never forget that.

I also remember where I was when we declared war on Iraq the first time, when Operation Desert Shield turned into Operation Desert Storm and the Persian Gulf War. I was in the checkout line at the grocery store with my mom, and the manager came over the PA with the announcement that we had declared war. Again, we watched the war on CNN.

Challenger: my mom was crying, and all I could wonder was why she was crying at two clouds that to me looked like bunny ears.

Columbia: my mom called me at college and woke me up with the news that the space shuttle had crashed again.

Grasshopper Green 07-04-2006 04:04 PM

JFK - Not born.

Moon landing - Not born.

John Lennon - Too young to remember.

Challenger - I was in third grade and the principal came over the intercom and told everyone what had happened. My teacher left the room crying.

Berlin Wall - I watched it on TV as it happened. I had been studying the Cold War in school (I was in 7th grade I think), so I was glued to the TV all night.

Gulf War - I was riding home with my family after having eaten dinner out; I was terrified that something bad was going to happen to us. I was in 8th grade.

First WTC attack - I was in high school, but I really don't remember what I was doing when I first heard about it.

9/11 - I was 5 months pregnant at the time and had just dropped my hubby off at work; he had been gone for a month long military training and had flown in the night before. I had to take my mom to the dentist that day and didn't actually get to see coverage until late afternoon; I listened to everything as it happened on the radio.

Columbia - I think I was at home, but I don't really remember that well.

How about Waco? I remember that clearly...I was in 10th grade health class, and my normally very boring, very calm teacher ran in wild-eyed shouting "Waco is on fire! Waco is on fire!". He turned on the TV and we didn't do any work the rest of the day.

MoonDog 07-04-2006 10:50 PM

Where were you when....?

a) JFK was shot
b) Apollo 11 landed on the moon
c) John Lennon was shot
d) the Berlin Wall fell
e) the 9/11 attacks occurred

A) Not born yet!

B) Watching with my parents. As the first steps were taken on the Moon's surface, I decided to copycat the astronaut and took my first steps as well! All of my parents friends who were there thought that was cool as hell!

C) I was in 7th Grade. It didn't mean much to me at the time, since I wasn't a huge Beatles fan, nor even really aware of them.

D) I was in college at the University of Buffalo. I don't remember much beyond that, except that all of my friends and I were wondering what would happen next, and if all hell would break loose because of it.

E) I was sitting at my desk at work. I was trying to research something, and the Internet was DAMN slow, so I went onto the news sites to see if there was a major Internet outage. That's when I discovered that the tower had been hit. I told everyone in the office, and we sat around while I tried to glean info from the net and the local radio. At that point, we weren't sure if we were under military attack or terrorist.

After about 30 minutes, my boss says, "OK - we all have things to do, nothing much to learn right now". I couldn't believe it, because we had no clue as to what happened, how many people died, who was attacking us, etc. All I could think of was that, when Kennedy was shot, my boss probably stayed glued to the radio.

Average_Joe 07-05-2006 05:11 AM

A. JFK shot: not even sperm yet.
B. Apollo 11: only a toddler, no memory
C. John Lennon: I was in 7th grade, and I had not yet begun to appreciate his music or the Beatles, so my memory of this is vague. I do remember watching it on the news in the morning before school, and then all of the radio play his music got soon after.
D. Berlin Wall: Listening to the events on the radio while driving around during my college days.
E. 9/11: At work. The TV in the cafeteria showed the events on CNN. Saw the second plane hit on live TV. I was in total shock for the whole day, and got no work done.

One event not on this list that I clearly remember is the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster. I was listening to it on AM radio in a truck with my cousin during a snowstorm as we were plowing the snow. Just before the launch, my cousin said out loud to me, jokingly, "bet this thing blows up". About 5 minutes later, his prediction came true. He sat there in stunned silence for a long time.

a) JFK was shot
wasn't born yet

b) Apollo 11 landed on the moon
I was in utero

c) John Lennon was shot
I was in 7th grade, maybe 6th. I remember there was one girl in my class that wore black for the rest of high school after that. I thought it was weird then and still think it's weird now. She didn't go goth, goth wasn't the thing then, wasn't even A thing then.

d) the Berlin Wall fell
In college; we knew it was going to happen about a year before. No one knew it was going to be such a huge event like it was. Seeing the images on TV of it being torn down was great.

e) the 9/11 attacks occurred
At my desk at work talking to a friend of mine on IM who was talking to his sister on the phone who lived just a few blocks away. We couldn't get any feeds on the internet so we went next door to the gas station where they have tv's mounted on the wall. We stood there in awe at the whole scene unfolding. I had a friend working in the Gannett towers in Arlington, VA that overlook the Pentagon and I talked to him as he was evactuating the towers. It was one of the most surreal things I have ever experienced.

water_bug 07-09-2006 06:09 AM

I wasn't born for JFK, Apollo 11, or John Lennon. When the Berlin Wall came down I was in second grade, and didn't have a clue what the signifiance was.

911 was interesting. I was going to the bathroom when I heard my stepmother screaming from the other room. When I came out she told me aplane had hit the World Trade Center. All I could think was, they shouldn't build buildings that high. I had no clue that it was terrorism, not untill the second plane hit. Then me and my step mom and my dad sat, glued to the TV, all day.

a) JFK was shot
b) Apollo 11 landed on the moon
c) John Lennon was shot
d) the Berlin Wall fell
e) the 9/11 attacks occurred

c) fetus- lennon died December 1980, I was born March '81.
d) Nov '89... I was 8. I was probably watching cartoons or asleep or something.

e) 9/11/01 - I was 20. I was standing in the cafe portion of the campus bookstore at the University of Central Florida. My bag slung over my left shoulder, I was holding what is normally a coffee cup full of regular milk, because on that day they'd run out of regular plastic cups. I had just finished eating a cinnamon raisin bagel and gotten up to browse the bookstore before heading to class. The speakers in the ceiling were playing music. The exact song I can't recall, because it wasn't very loud and I wasn't paying attention to the sound coming from the speakers until they had changed the audio over to Katie Couric and Matt Lauer covering the first crash. It was 8:57am and the volume on the speakers was also raised to a loud level, gathering the attention of everyone in the cafe and bookstore. No one spoke except to mutter quiet expressions of shock over the "accident". Practically no one moved a muscle while sitting or standing in place, listening to the shock of the "accident" and hearing Matt and Katie try to give updates on what info they had. At 9:03am, the second plane hit the second tower, and pretty much everyone knew what that had to mean. I only stayed for a minute after the second hit, and there was nothing but shock on the faces of the people I saw as I ran out of the cafe. Some had begun crying and tearing up already. I went right to my car and drove straight to my parents' house. For the first minute or two, several radio stations were still playing their normal stuff... but after that, every single radio station was playing either ABC or CBS or NBC or CNN or whatever station they feed from for big news. When I got home, I sat down and started watching Peter Jennings... after a period, I watched as the towers collapsed. After that, I watched Peter Jennings for the entirety of his continuous 48 hours of coverage. When day two was over and Jennings finally signed off, I realized I'd not slept the entire time. I had, in fact, only left the couch to answer the door for two pizza deliveries, to get more water to drink, and to use the bathroom. I didn't lose anyone personally- I could have because my uncle sometimes had meetings there- but I was calmly handling the shock of the loss of life and the horror of it all by shutting off the rest of the world. (I can literally replay pretty much every waking moment from the event to about 3 or 4 days later, almost to the minute. It's like... tattooed on my brain.)
