Simply disgusting, I don't understand how human beings can be capable of such outrages.

Probe into baby 'burned in oven'

Detectives are attempting to discover if a three-week-old boy found with horrific burns was dumped in an oven before his death.

Officers are searching a house in Grimwade Close, Peckham, south-east London, where the child was discovered.

The boy, who has not been named, was confirmed dead in King's College Hospital nine hours after paramedics rushed him from the scene for treatment.

It is understood the infant was not discovered inside an oven at the address, but police said inquiries will establish if he suffered the burns after being placed inside the cooker.

A 39-year-old woman was later arrested and sectioned under the Mental Health Act, but police refused to say what relationship she had to the baby.

Relatives of the child are being supported by a family liaison officer and have been informed of the results of a post mortem examination.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "We were called by the ambulance to a baby suffering injuries. The three-week-old was taken to King's College Hospital suffering burns and died at 1.05pm."

He confirmed that a post-mortem examination was carried out at Great Ormond Street mortuary, but said police will not discuss the cause of death.

Detective Chief Inspector David Marshall, leading the inquiry, said: "This was a tragic and traumatic incident and a family liaison officer has been appointed to the family.

"Detectives from the Child Protection Command Major Investigation Team will be conducting house to house enquiries and speaking to witnesses already identified. The examination of the scene will continue."

I hope it is a hoax, but it is being carried by the BBC, and I dont think they would quote a Metropolitan police source if they werent sure that was what the source really was... and there is no way the police would release a false statement like this.

It's hearing things like this that make me both WANT to and NOT want to volunteer to help abused children. I have been trying to decide for a while if I could handle it. Instead of sitting here thinking "how does this happen?", I could be doing something constructive to prevent it.

While I find it horrible that such a thing happened, this is not all that shocking or new a concept. People have been doing such things- gruesome murders- for a very, very, very long time. We hear about them more now because of internet, satellites, etc.

There are 6 billion+ people in the world, many types of known psychoses, and many more we have no way of directly identifying. Sometimes people's brain chemistry just... gets fucked all to hell, to put it plainly.

These people are disturbed, to be sure, but that does not mean that society as a whole has a breakdown in morality.

Based on the fact they wouldn't release the autopsy results, and she has been institutionalized, that the woman really did put the baby in the oven and bake it. If not, it's possible she strangles/drowned it and THEN decided to burn it to get rid of the body. Thing is, burning flesh stinks and it might have freaked her out into stopping the oven.

Some people are intentionally sadistic, but some people are just mentally dysfunctional.

What I really find interesting is the amount of extra "outrage" there is when it's a baby or child. They are not more important than adolescents or adults, in my opinion.

The point is a baby can't defend itself, and also cannot provoke an attack, where as an adult or adolescent can. Most of us have a genetic instinct to defend children, and for people who have had children it actually is more outrageous for someone to murder a baby than to murder an adult.

Also, not to keep labouring the point, but I wonder would have happened if someone like me had make the "baby back rib" comment and it was someone else's thread. But it's all a matter of degree I suppose, calling American soldiers murderers is one thing, and joking about dead babies is something else.

No, it's a matter of context. King's comment was his own way of drawing the horror out of this situation in his own way... and he does not have a "dead baby joke" attitude in every post he puts in the TFP. This was not even a dead baby joke, he didn't create it. The story was there, he made a satirical comment to it.

As for your comment about weighing the two and what would have happened to you if you said it- you would never make such a comment, and you know it, so this is a moot point at best. No such comparison can exist. (If I were a monkey, could I fly?)

Why ask such a question? Oh, that's right, because it would be provocative and stir some shit up.
