Help settling a silly debate

All righty folks, here's the deal. For months now i've been trying to explain to Ace_O_Spades (yes you *glare*) that the expression: "Wednesday is hump day" is a legitimate Canadian/North American idiomatic phrase. It may be a little old, or only exclusive to Canada, but nonetheless IT IS REAL!

*again glares at Ace at his refusal to acknowledge a real expression*

Seeing as how he won't believe me in saying that i didn't make it up, nor does it stand for anything kinky, i decided to post it up here to see what our peanut gallery has to say.

Bobaphat 04-23-2004 04:52 PM

Yep. Wednesday.

bparker805 04-23-2004 04:52 PM

It is Hump Day because it is in the middle of the week. After Wednesday its all down hill from there to the weekend. I do however feel that we should all start a grassroots movement make it stand for something kinky.:D

moonstrucksoul 04-23-2004 04:58 PM

I used to work with a guy who referred to it as Hump Day, because it was the middle of the week, and cuz it was the one day of the week that his wife and him got it on, planned.

iccky 04-23-2004 04:59 PM

My girlfriend refers to it as hump day.

I like that .

Which kind of defeats your not kinky point, but on your side I'm not canadian.

FaderMonkey 04-23-2004 05:03 PM

I guess I'm out of the loop. I've never heard of it.

santafe5000 04-23-2004 05:06 PM

Has been and always will be Hump Day.

grayman 04-23-2004 05:23 PM

It pisses me off because it doesn't fit my schedule as middle of the week, but it is a common expression.

QuasiMojo 04-23-2004 05:35 PM

excuse me, but I resent and AM offended by this expression.
I think it shows a real lack of consideration for us...how would you put it...LESS ERECT.

~mojoedit~ummmm....nevermind.

Kaos 04-23-2004 05:48 PM

Legitimate expression...and well I get Wednesday's off from work, so it's a great day :)

yournamehere 04-23-2004 05:56 PM

Yup . . . . by Wednesday, you're "over the hump" and on the downhill ride to the weekend.

WarWagon 04-23-2004 05:57 PM

Yes, though I hadn't heard it until earlier this year.

ratbastid 04-23-2004 06:01 PM

Definitely. Get past Wednesday, and you're "over the hump".

Though I always thought it was a little silly, since more people have sex on the weekends...

greytone 04-23-2004 06:45 PM

Seeing how Tuesday is my day off, I think of Thursday as my hump day.

What the hell?! I never heard of it either! Man, you people are crazy!

Guess I better get it on with the group!

Polyphobic 04-23-2004 07:37 PM

I first heard that when I first moved to Denver. Now all the radio personalities use it here.

BoomTruck 04-23-2004 08:06 PM

I've heard it. Personally I think it sounds stupid, but I've heard it.

Karby 04-23-2004 08:17 PM

i've never heard of it, but it doesn't hurt to know.

Poloboy 04-23-2004 08:35 PM

I had never of heard of it before. My life is now complete.

cchris 04-23-2004 08:48 PM

Tons of potential.

Tirian 04-23-2004 08:52 PM

Been using/hearing it all my life. (well since Jr. High anyways)
Humpday = Wednesday for many years now.

Fire 04-23-2004 08:55 PM

yeah- ever since Jr. high, a term in common use

bermuDa 04-23-2004 10:29 PM

I have never heard that expression from any friends from the US or Canada.

makes sense, but I don't really care for the word "hump".

Ace_O_Spades 04-23-2004 10:45 PM

its not an actual expression

fallenangel 04-23-2004 10:45 PM

ACE!!!! @#$%#$% You are wrong, just admit it and move on, the debate is over.

well folks it's not about hump as in humping another person, c'mon now, it's hump as in middle of the week, like a hill you've got to climb... hurrah! :D Doesn't matter if you like it or not either, just if you've heard of it or not.

Thanks, this is awesome! :)

sam95519 04-23-2004 11:29 PM

Heard it most of my life.

CinnamonGirl 04-23-2004 11:33 PM

*nods* It seems like every one of my junior high teachers used the term.

Lebell 04-23-2004 11:37 PM

It's only dirty if you are so inclined, but it has been around along time.

So what did you bet? :D

Fob_Magi 04-24-2004 01:21 AM

yep I've heard it for years.. and I'm in texas...

Latch 04-24-2004 02:34 AM

I've heard it before.. and it also reminded me of this little chant that pissed (drunk) bastards usually sing repeatedly at the top of their lungs (yeah.. I've done it too)...

Leader: Monday's a working day
All: Monday's a working day
Leader: Tuesday's a drinking day
All: Tuesday's a drinking day
... and so on w/ the following days:....
Wednesday's a smoking day
Thursday's an Ahhh day
Friday's a fucking day
Saturday's a footy day
Sunday's a holy day

Leader: Is everybody happy?
All: You bet your ass we are!

Peetster 04-24-2004 04:15 AM

The urban dictionary agrees.

wednesday

cause it's downhill after wednesday; it's the hump you have to get over.

hump day

The middle of a work week (Wednesday); used in the context of climbing a proverbial hill to get through a tough week.

After hump day, the weekend gets closer.

RelaX 04-24-2004 04:54 AM

hmm... my girl always refers to wednesday as humpday... I liked it but thought that was just a figment of her dirty mind.
Actually I never even concidered any other meaning than sexual :D
A dirty mind is a joy forever

absorbentishe 04-24-2004 05:39 AM

Climbing the hump to Wednesday, going downhill to the weekend after you're over the hump.

Beefimator 04-24-2004 05:03 PM

Yup. Its a real thing. After Wednesday, you should be in cruise control the rest ot the week. NICE

Ha ha ha! You made me laugh. Stubborn little shit aren't you?

You are going to have to give in on this one Ace, fallenangel is correct. I am in the western part of the US and I have heard and used this term for many years. I know a lot of people throughout the states who use it as well. It isn't used as frequently as it used to be, but I do still hear it.

I am curious like Lebell is....what did ya bet??? ;)

Redjake 04-24-2004 06:15 PM

I'm from the south and it's used quite often. "welp, today's hump day. two more days and the weekend is here."

frequent useage.

bernadette 04-24-2004 06:18 PM

yup. heard of hump day first like 20-25 yrs ago.

TGIF : thank god it's friday

SHIT : sure happy it's thursday
although i don't get why anyone would be thrilled about a thursday... *shrugs*

/me *does a little victory dance*

Angel - We didn't bet anything... just the satisfaction of knowing how right i am and how wrong he is after a good year of debating. :D

tisonlyi 04-25-2004 01:28 PM

I always thought Tuesday was the hump day, you're in sight of the weekend again by Wednesday and I dunno about where you live, but Wednesday has always been a reasonable night out on the razzle dazzle wherever I've laid my hat.

Tuesdays.

Grrr.
