XXX-DVDs a new hazard for drivers
http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/03/10/dri....ap/index.html
I really don't know what to think about this. Part of me agrees with the fact that people shouldn't be subjected to this if it offends them, but then again, part of me is saying you're either far too close to my car if you can make out what's going on on a 8 inch screen, or you can just look away. What does everyone think? Please answer in the poll and then post a response. |
is it really that widespread of a problem? i think that people should just mind their own business about what's being viewed on a screen in somebody's car. If you happen to see something you don't like, then speed on around them and forget about it.
|
Personally I don't think movies/tv should be playing while the person is driving, but other than that, who the hell cares? You shouldn't be looking in other people's cars to begin with, and nobody's forcing you to watch it.
|
Now it makes you wonder why isn't the driver who is complaining
keeping their eyes on the road....... Hmmmmm....... :/ |
w00t!!!! I'm from Buffalo Grove :D My hometown got mentioned on CNN :D
Anyways, while it may be in someone else's car, one cannot simply turn of peripheral vision or, worse yet, their bored kid in the back seat that's looking around. As art mentioned in my journal, this isn't much different than putting your TV in your bay window and facing the street. |
Hoo boy.. This struck me by surprize too.
I'm not against porn movies, but I am *strongly* against movies in general, playing in the car. This is at least as bad as chatting on the cell phone. The average driver has enough distractions, drunk drivers, and road-raging maniacs to worry about, and having to add people who watch porn in their cars to this list is ridiculous. Its not just the driver that becomes at risk, its everyone around them, so yea, watch your movies - porn or otherwise - at home, and keep your eyes on the road. |
Keep in mind, the drivers are not watching the movies. The passengers in the back seat are as the screens are mounted behind the driver's seat in the middle of the roof. Even if there is a screen in the front, and assuming it was manufacturer installed, then it is only able to be activated when the car is not in motion.
|
I have nothing against XXX movies in general, but having them to play them in the car is to play them in public, and there are probably laws against that sort of thing.
|
Looks like im in the minority here, but I dont really think this is an issue. I dont think it is as bad as Secret makes it out to be--the movies arent exactly broadcast for everyone to see.
How could one enforce this anyways? The only way to do so would be to ban the players from cars in general, which I dont see as an appropriate solution. |

I totally agree here. Mind your own damn business on the road. There's enouigh to watch out for other than 8" movie screens in other people's cars. |
I could care less what anyone watches in their home but in public, there should be some sort of accountability. If you need porn in the car, tint those windows!
|
The thing about this case is, its starting to infringe on privacy rights. I am not sure, but I do believe that cars are private property, so if the police start enforcing what you do no your own property (within reason of course), then this would cause some problems.
|
they shouldn't be allowed because if you're in an area with heavy traffic or something minors could look into your window. I bet parents would be hella pissed off
|
You can't do anything anymore without offending someone.
I didn't realize there was a huge epidemic of people watching porno flicks on their car dvd players. I don't know anyone who even HAS one. |

if you're driving you can't help but see what's in front of you. |
I'm starting my own business. I'm going to start selling Window Blinds for cars!
"Are you tired of Paying 500$ fines for watching pornography while stuck in traffic? Try our new product, Benz Blinds! Stop those peering children from ruining your day! Get Benz Blinds today!" Sadly I think this falls under the same catagory as having sex in front of your window, Although you're still on private property, It's still indecent... |
I know of a better way to fix the problem. Just ban all sex.
Since sex is so evil we should just get rid of it all togetter. |

that statement alone is pure evil. |

I think some people take their privacy issues a little too far. There are 6 billion of us walking this planet - it can't always be about "my privacy" when you're in the middle of a public place. There is a time and a place for everything, and - as much as I enjoy porn - can't you just wait till you get home? Or an empty parking lot? |

until they can beam the image directly into someone's eye like headphones... you gotta have a little respect for other people. So let's take this the other way.... would you mind having antisemetic images played on TV screens in cars? If you defend the porn, you have to defend the antisemetic imagery. |
I don't really know what my take on this issue is. On the one hand, I want to say to mind your own damn business and keep your eyes out of my car, but on the other hand, that type of movie probably doesn't belong in public where little kids can get a glimpse.
I don't think it's really any different than leaning over and giving my boyfriend head in the car while he's driving though... and that's why I'm torn on the issue. |
Television screens flicker and glow, they automatically draw attention. I find myself drawn to them in other cars when I'm driving, and for some stupid reason I want to know what it is that they are watching. So, I dislike all TVs in cars. Read a book if you are bored in the backseat.
That aside, we were watching porn on the overhead screens on a college bus trip back in 1990, so this isn't new. |
I almost forgot...
if it's okay on the TV screen to have porn... then live action should be fair too. And it's not, it's indecent vis a vie the laws surrounding the late 90s porn of driving 405 in LA. I don't know the actual penal code but I do recall reading about it. |
There should be no video entertainment in any moving vehicle, unless it is equiped with privacy glass. The distraction to nearby drivers constitutes a hazard.
But, then, I believe that anyone caught holding a cell phone while they drive should lose their license. |
Reminds me of a story a flight attendent friend of mine told me.
A man was watching what ammounted to a wet t-shirt video on his laptop. The lady next to him complained to my friend. He reviewed the video, reviewed the airline's policy and determined it wasn't pornographic. The lady still complained and my friend told her, if she didn't like it, quit looking at his computer. |
I strongly believe in privacy rights and the 1st amendment, but you also have to use common sense. This is material that is highly offensive to many people. Most people that aren't even offended by it wouldn't want their kids watching porn either. If we are going to be allowed to watch our porn, it doesn't need to be shoved in the faces of those who don't.
|
Why can't people who find sex offensive just stop haveing sex?
If these people stop reproduseing alot of problems would be solved. |

Again, I say, if you think that's fine, then the anti-semetic, the KKK, should be able to show videos that fit their lifestyle, lynching of black people, killing of jews, etc. If you defend that as vigorously as you do your own desire then I'm all for your position of 1st Amendment rights. |
this isn't about adults averting their eyes to save themselves from seeing porn, this is about children and minors, kids are supposed to be looking around when you are out driving, what are you suppoesed to do, say "eyes forward, don't look anywhere but the back of the seat" WTF? that's no way to have them get interested in the outside world away from tv and video games. kids don't avert their eyes, they are curious and don't know (usually) whether something is for them or not. i would go through the roof if my daughter was exposed to some chick sucking cock on the dvd, which you can see just fine driviing next to someone or at a stoplight. If you want to watch porn, cool, so do i, but not in my car where the outside world can see me.
this isn't about the privacy of your vehicle either, unless you are [b]ON[b] your own property, the same laws should apply as if you were standing outside your vehicle. BTW, YoungNastyMan, let us know when you have a couple of kids that are in gradeschool so we can sit down and watch some porn with them, if you haven't already exposed them to it:) |
You can't make out that tiny screen unless you are incredibly close. Some friends and I did this on a road trip about 2 summers ago. We were in a van, and we were recodring fun parts of our trip on a videocamera with about 72x zoom. We saw a van with a movie playing in it and decided it to be fun to try and see what it was. So we kept egging the driver on to get closer and closer to the van to see what it was. I was camera man and we literally had to be right next to the dang van and I still had to zoom about 4x to make out that it was Star Wars Episode I.

a law is unnessisary... who cares what people are watching.... they shouldnt be watching anything... xcept the fucking road!!!
and why are you looking in other peoples cars? keep your eyes on the road.... o and for passengers such as kids.... well... might as well c porn in a car... gonna c it on the internet anyway... |
I'm very much against people playing movies in their cars WHILE they are driving, but if they do, who the hell cares what they play..... you should be paying attention to your driving, not what others are watching in their car....
|
I don't see why it would be such an injustice to take away the privelage of watching porn in a car, so I would be fine with having it outlawed. Wait til you get to the privacy of your home for that stuff.

I suppose i'm biased however, since I do not find pornography offensive in any way and do not have children. It doesn't really affect my life... |
Common sense dictates that you can't display porn on a TV and put that TV out on your lawn for all to see, even though it is still your property.
I see no reason why it should be different in your car. Get tinted windows and be done with it. |
I wouldn't allow my back seat passenger to watch porn while I'm driving; semen is such a persistant stain.
