Public Executions, The reality show.

I haven't heard of any such thing, but I just know the networks are trying their hardest to put together some sleezy shit like this.

I can see it now, 8 death row inmates competing in games, voting each other to death, the winner gets a stay of execution, then have a few episodes dedicated to showing each of the losers in the chair. Of course the families of the losers get a little chuck of money and the inmates get to tell their story. Then, Viewers can call in and vote to save the persons life.

What do you think? Will it be on FOX or ABC? Will the masses gather around to watch real emotions like they do the fake crap on all the other reality shows?

I don't think we're there yet, but in a few years I can imagine something like this seriously being considered for a reality show.

That's all.. Move this whereever you think it belongs.

mystmarimatt 02-21-2004 03:21 AM

yeesh, that's rather morbid. :(

...

I think this thread needs a smiley face to cheer it up.

:)

But generally, much as we as a people have this kind of voyeuristic nature that lends itself to why Reality TV is so popluar, something tells me the FCC wouldn't be ecstatic about an idea such as that one.

Shpoop 02-21-2004 04:32 AM

i hope we never get that far...but if we do, it will definitely be fox! Thinks about it, they have 'my big fat obnoxious fiance', 'the littlest groom', and 'man vs beast'... if you ever sit down and watch one of those shows, its pretty obvious that FOX has no moral standards

SabrinaFair 02-21-2004 06:00 AM

Oh lord.

I can definetly see that getting good ratings, despite how morbid, and in my opinion immoral, that is.

Shokan 02-21-2004 07:21 AM

To be honest, if the reality show craze doesn't slow down, something like this will happen. The media has alot of sway in matters of these types.

To totally derail this thread, we can always go to Saudi Arabia, where executions are held in full public view in a stadium.

LutherMac 02-21-2004 07:54 AM

Say... wasn't this already a book/movie? Oh yeah... Running Man.

I really have no doubt that this will become on of the future generations of reality tv if the craze doesn't die off. Even with the dreck thats out there, millions of viewers continue to watch.

Can't say I blame 'em.... I'm one of them. :) Think I lost 12 IQ points just last week.

Bill O'Rights 02-21-2004 08:06 AM

The truly sad part is that, given the current level of crap that's out there, something like this really wouldn't surprise me. What's even worse than that is the fact that I can see this being a ratings bonanza. I hope that no one in the entertainment industry sees this thread. You seem to have put an awful lot of thought into this, cybermike. :hmm: Are you sure that your not in the entertainment industry?

Aletheia 02-21-2004 08:08 AM

He is really pooling us to see how the public would react.

Holo 02-21-2004 08:30 AM

Just remember hanging and executions were quite public in the old old days. I think we're more moral now of course, but it really isn't a stretch to think public executions would happen again. I think a lot of ppl would've liked to watch McVeigh get executed, and IIRC they even tried to make it PPV or a streaming broadcast but it got shot down. I personally would watch someone who hurt my family get executed, and even gladly pull the switch/ push the plunger on them myself. I would watch it if they made it but I don't think I'd let my kid watch it until she become a little hardened.

LStanley 02-21-2004 08:36 AM

yeeee haw!!!

Comin from the in-bred state of Texas.. WHO GETS THA ROPE!?

lol... j/k... these shows are seriously gonna be a waste of effort and money... people will watch them though... so I guess its a good buisness venture.. on every other aspect.. I say its garbage

I was thinking it sounded like Logan's Run with the "Governator" staring as Logan -- but maybe I'm wrong. I'll have to make a trip to Blockbusters. Good movie.

Destrox 02-21-2004 09:01 AM

Till the goverment actually steps in and controls the media, I wouldnt doubt if this ever happens.

The media is out of control, and the media controls TV.

Logan's Run was about Spoiler: getting killed at your 30th birthday regardless of criminality.. Running man is closer to the the original post. Still a good flick tho.

JStrider 02-21-2004 09:16 AM

Whoa, i totally forgot about that movie. Great show!

Fremen 02-21-2004 09:24 AM

ESPN even has a new reality show coming on.
I think they compete to be a sports writer or broadcaster.

kpxrob 02-21-2004 09:49 AM

thats a stupid idea. but i bet you that someone is willing to see it happen.

StormBerlin 02-21-2004 12:07 PM

This post reminds me of The Lottery. I don't know if any of you read that story in school, but it's pretty twisted... Look it up if you haven't.

Skettios 02-21-2004 01:52 PM

Everyone had to read The Lottery in school. I'm pretty sure you can find it on the internet somewhere. They even mention it in the Simpsons... ;-)

LutherMac 02-21-2004 02:35 PM

The best interpretation of the "Lottery" that I can remember was an episode of Sliders...

default_i 02-21-2004 03:34 PM

Anyone ever play Smash TV so far back when? It'd be fun!

Honestly, though, I agree with most people. If they thought it'd make money, they'd hop on it in a second. Fox would kill for an opportunity like this (Kill? Eh? Get it? ...sorry). They can't have too much steam left, though. What's popular on TV comes and goes. Why, it wasn't too long ago that everyone was talking about the Millionaire show, remember?

Spartak 02-21-2004 04:57 PM

Wow, after reading The Lottery just now.. thanks to some of the posters here for suggesting such a marvelously twisted story. :)

macmanmike6100 02-21-2004 11:00 PM

shpoop, you had it right when you said that FOX has no moral standards

I might not go that far but I don't believe that they have very high standards. What's worse is that I'm not the only one who wouldn't be surprised to see this crap on TV.

Charlatan 02-22-2004 06:57 AM

I also remember a book and a movie called the Tenth Victim. A reality show where you were hunted and if you survived you were allowed to hunt. If you managed to get 10 you were awarded big prizes.

The hunted were allowed to fight back.

Most hunters didn't make it very far.

Cynthetiq 02-22-2004 07:20 AM

they don't like the fact that Ultimate Fight Championchips are aired, and they have issues from state to state.

I think maybe we'll see something along these lines, but not live, and not in all states, and not without lots of controversy.

Yikes. I don't really see the resemblence, honestly.

Public executions would be, IMHO, a good idea. As a contest?? No way. Just as a "public access channel" show.

"Today we have Billy Bob Ray Tyrone Green here on the trap. Say 'Hi' to the audience, Billy Bob."

"Help me!"

"Ha ha, that's a good one, Billy Bob. Today's executioner is the winner of the lot of the mates of your victims, who shall go nameless as per tradition."

A person in a black hood with a :) on it comes onto the platform. He puts a black hood with a :( on Billy Bob's head, then the noose. He steps back.

"Any last words, Billy Bob?" says the announcer.

"I didn't do it!"

"Yes, I expect we're supposed to believe you, even though forty-seven people saw you drop the bomb on that birthday party. Pull the switch, smiley!"

Billy Bob drops through the trap. They show him dangling, jerking, then pissing his pants. He becomes still after a few minutes.

"That's about all for today! Tune in tomorrow when Ol' Sparky in Florida will warm the next multiple murderer! Until then, have a nice day."

InTeGrA77 02-22-2004 12:10 PM

I hope that things never go that far...thats just disgusting.

I doubt that it would last long at all. I don't think that the families of those being executed would be too happy with this idea either...

wannabenakid247 02-22-2004 12:16 PM

Its not that far in the future I think unfortunately.

Running man - cool film

denim 02-22-2004 12:49 PM

Oh, I just realized there'd be another step. After the bit where he becomes still after a few minutes, :) goes down and pulls down HARD on his legs a few times. Gotta be sure of these things, y'know.

GakFace 02-22-2004 12:53 PM

GEORGE CARLIN!!!!!!!!!!!!

Listen to his "Balancing the Budget" set. Its all about making it in a stadium for people to watch people die. And the bidding on which hole the decappitated head falls into. Also he has different sponsers for burning at the stake, cruxifiction, and electricutions.

SirGoreaxe 02-22-2004 01:46 PM

That would be a great show! I wanted to see Timothy Mcvehy die. And I know everyone would like to see osamma die. And the running man type of killing would be just great.

ladyadmin 02-23-2004 02:06 AM

IF the show came out..Put yourself in the position that the criminal was in on TV. Now would you want your fate in the hands of a massive audience of people you don't know? Personally I say 'HELL NO'! Then again, isn't it just like sitting in front of a jury of unfamiliar faces?

With all the controversy that would surround such a show as this, I don't think that any network is brave enough to pull it off. They may gain ground in the ratings department but it wouldn't be long before they start losing respect by their peers and losing money.

dannyboy21 02-23-2004 06:19 PM

I would be surprised if a show like that DOESN'T appear in the next decade or two...because more and more violence are tolerated on TV everyday...

but who knows, maybe some grassroots movement will change all this...

cleanx 02-23-2004 06:29 PM

fox
yeah those fucks are making reality shows on every thing
who wants to marry midget?

runawayfetus 02-24-2004 06:12 PM

if this ever happens im going to kill u and the network
