Ever think of how funny some words are?

Like "quence" is hilarious. Ever just say a word and listen to it?

clavus 12-31-2003 11:34 AM

How about "cumquat?"

Tophat665 12-31-2003 11:41 AM

Some just sound funny:
- absquatulate
- crapulent
- spavined

And some are funny for other reasons: irony or recursion:
- abbreviation - very long
- phonetic - not spelled how it sounds
- pentasyllabic -has five syllables
- hipposesquipedalian (also hippomonstrosesquipedalian) - pertaining to (extremely) unnecessarily long words

omega2K4 12-31-2003 11:51 AM

Dongle.

Kaos 12-31-2003 12:16 PM

This thread is perfect for lots of George Carlin material :)

ARTelevision 12-31-2003 01:23 PM

I got stuck on a whole succession of words when I was a kid.
I remember one of the first ones was "glad" - thought it sounded real dumb. After that, it was a constant theme in my head until I decided to stop it. I guess they all sound dumb if you repeat them enough. I do like how their (totally arbitrary) meaning falls away when you you ponder them in isolation, though.

VF19 12-31-2003 01:27 PM

I think crayon is a weird word.
Or clay. And coy.

C's and Y's dont mix.

Angel 12-31-2003 02:52 PM

Nozzle is a funny sounding word to me.
And if you say it a bunch of times in a row, you start to wonder if you are saying it right! But then again, you can do that with any word and get the same result...even your own name. :)

Halx 12-31-2003 03:01 PM

riboflavin, people, riboflavin

H12 12-31-2003 03:43 PM

Prosthetic is a strange word to me, for whatever reason.

Nefir 12-31-2003 04:15 PM

Forsooth, cloister, Seattle, beluga, chuck, napkin, lurch, popsicle, choir, titmouse, turtle, dunk, chihuahua, voyeur, shim, carpetbagger, smidgeon.

Discuss.

Baldrick 12-31-2003 04:47 PM

Guam... I could never live there, because I'd be wandering around giggling all the time. :D

Guam...

Psivage 12-31-2003 04:49 PM

fiddlesticks

dorkin 12-31-2003 05:40 PM

Masticate

Fremen 12-31-2003 05:44 PM

Supercilious almost sounds like it would be a good thing.

sailor 12-31-2003 06:57 PM

I used to do this all the time as a kid. Any word, if I thought about it long enough, would seem utterly strange. It still happens occasionally.

forseti-6 12-31-2003 07:56 PM

banana
dickie
goat
road
squish

GakFace 12-31-2003 09:47 PM

Flabbergast

Fremen 12-31-2003 11:10 PM

butterfly -- think about it.
Why not flutterby?

/can't remember where I heard it.

Reese 01-01-2004 12:32 AM

I don't like exceptions to the rules.. Like isn't is weird that "weird" is spelled with EI instead of IE?

Why the hell don't they spell Colonel the way it sounds?

HockeyGuy 01-01-2004 10:08 AM

Bangle!

Sion 01-01-2004 12:04 PM

obsequious is a funny/cool word

as are gesticulate and testicular

how about flatulent

I could go on and on...

mrquackers 01-01-2004 01:18 PM

Panties.

The word just always sounded ridiculous to me, like something for little girls, not women.

Also... tinkle.

I have another one for that second list..

- Pretentious
:D

druptight 01-01-2004 02:33 PM

pants is by far my favorite word... it's so weird. the whole plural thing and how it's a pair even though it's one... just an overall great word.

krwlz 01-01-2004 02:46 PM

Rutabega had always been a favorite of mine.

analog 01-01-2004 05:34 PM

The word rickets has always made me laugh my ass off.

That and spigot.

I agree with the word "pants"... I once got into a very long, very silly back-and-forth with a friend of mine about whether or not it was a ridiculous word... of course, we were both very stoned at the time, and the mention of the word pants just made us die laughing.

chiefslappajo 01-01-2004 06:51 PM

Gotta be "windbreaker". Why the hell would I want to wear that?

Or pronounce it the way it's spelled.

Same thing goes with Corps and Ensign.

GuttersnipeXL 01-02-2004 04:38 PM

How about the word....wheel. It sounds like your saying "real" with a lisp! Try it out, it's wheel annoying!

namakenezumi 01-02-2004 07:35 PM

There's a great humorous song on just this issue called, "Bulbous Bouffant" by a group called The Vestibules... Dr Demento includes it on a couple of his comedy collections...

Gimli 01-02-2004 08:04 PM

I can't say "Jeep" ten times in a row without giggling. Try it. There's no good reason for saying anything ten times in a row, to be sure, maybe short of "Oh God" or "yes."

And I must say, "panties" is a most powerful and evocative word, in the right context - especially when preceded by "white cotton."

InTeGrA77 01-02-2004 08:15 PM

the snozzberries taste like snozzberries!

cchris 01-02-2004 08:56 PM

Scurrilous.(It's as if it wants to be mis pronounced).

Scungy.

Flippant.

And Floozy just dont sound right.

myst 01-02-2004 09:27 PM

I'm surprised no one's mentioned defenestrate yet.

It's not a particularly funny word pronunciation-wise, but the defenition is outstanding.
