home insurance? how does it work?
I was wondering how home insurance works when one has to make a claim? It isn't really up to me since its not under my name but I want to know how it would work out. My house was broken into and they stole aton of stuff. The house and insurance isn't under my mom's name. They are both under my uncle's name, but my mom and my siblings live here. I have receipts for most of what was stolen. How does the claim process go? Will there be a problem since my uncle doesn't live here?
Thanks, Robert |
No, there shouldn't be a problem, and if the ins. co tries to make a problem out of it you can fight it.
All you have to do is call your agent, tell him what happened, and what's gone. |
Your uncle will have to call the insurance company and make the claim since the home and insurance are under his name. Give him the receipts for the items that were stolen.
Sorry to hear you were robbed, and this close to Christmas. That sucks man. |
Would it matter that some of the items are 2 years old?
Will they pay back the full price I paid for, or some depreciated value? Thanks, Robert |
it largely depends on the item. if it's a picture frame, they might pay to replace it. If it's a computer, don't expect to get an upgrade out of the deal.

I have been in the insurance field 25 yrs. I currently work for a southern state in the dept of insurance. Depends on the type of policy if the insurance company will pay anything. If he has a dwelling fire policy, contents coverage is not automatic. If it is a homeowners policy, coverage may exist. Call his agent, not the company and get an idea of what he has. |
It all comes down to the policy and what kind of limits there are for personal items. The policy should also state replacement value or actual value. And someone was right that the policy owner would need to make the claim.
Most important.... if there was theft, I hope you called the police and filed a report because that adds credibility to the theft claim. For the future, take photos or video of the contents in the home up close enough to show model numbers and conditions. That always helps if there is a conflict. Tough luck at Christmas. I wish you the best of luck recovering from this experience. |
