Invisibility.

Today I caused two packages of potato chips to remain invisible for a period of ten to fifteen minutes. During that time three individuals took no notice at all of the packages, even though there was only a slight obstruction blocking them from view. (Two of the individuals were below the age of six, and would have done anything to lay their hands on the chips in question.)

The secret?

I carefully acted as if nothing was there. When the individuals tried to see what was in my arms, I turned away from them and ignored the potato chips entirely. When they looked elsewhere, I went so far as to walk backwards to hide the packages, but never did I act as if anything was amiss. I never met the eye of any of the individuals while I was practicing this feat of invisibility, nor did I ever look at anything directly. No one made any mention of my odd behavior or, in fact, of me at all.

By acting as if the packages and I were not there and were not worth viewing, I was able to maintain a limited invisibility for an extended period.

I urge you to try this method and post your results.

Whew..I thought that it was just me for a second.

glytch 11-17-2003 07:40 AM

I might have read a little too much into it and inferred my own opinions but I, for one, thought it was hilarious.

Bloodslick 11-17-2003 08:21 AM

It may be funny, but it also works.

What is invisibility? It is the power to not be seen. Not being noticed, not being paid any attention to is almost the same thing. People claim to feel "invisible" when no one is giving them any attention; my method lets the attention of others fall away from you like water rolls off a duck's back. The next time you don't want to be noticed, just take a few minutes to practice my method. Be calm, quiet, and still, let your eyes glaze over, look down at the ground, and let your body act like you're not there.

Holo 11-17-2003 08:40 AM

I actually did a variation of this in school roaming the halls and it worked a lot. I would unfocus my eyes and imagine a piece of blank paper. I actually escaped the notice of hall monitors a few times while in plain view and they weren't distracted by a conversation, etc . I was seen every time when I didn't use this method, but using it I was rarely caught or seen, or at least not acknowledged as being there. As a kid I theorized that all ppl could detect another person subconciously by thought activity and not sight alone (the old "see but not observe" adage). I had a lot of theories like this when I was supposed to be learning in class :o.

powder 11-17-2003 11:55 AM

Heh, I was eating invisible m&ms this weekend.

krwlz 11-17-2003 01:08 PM

I used to do this as a kid when I wanted in on the adult party. You pick a spot, preferably in a semishadowed corner, and sit there and shut your mouth. You hear an aweful lot of good jokes, and learn quite a bit that way.

j03th3j3w 11-17-2003 01:48 PM

ahhh.. i understand now.. i thought you were hiding the potato chips... well... good job chap... done this myself a few times... and its fun!

jujueye 11-17-2003 01:57 PM

If I dont see you, you dont see me. Easy. I think this applies to potato chips, also.

Giant Hamburger 11-17-2003 01:58 PM

Hail Bloodslick!

Were you covered in blood when conducting the experiment?
http://www.blindyouth.freeuk.com/carrie.jpg
That would keep me from noticing the potato chips, if but for a moment.

all i'm thinking now is:

"HUH?!?!????"

edit: now i'm thinking its not as impressive as in hollow man... but hey...if it works maybe u could try make an elephant invisible now....

I was not covered in blood, but should have been. The third, mature individual would have noticed my dripping on the carpet in that scenario, though, and thus would I and the potato chips have been discovered.

Just to clarify: I was making myself go somewhat unnoticed so that the two bags of potato chips I had in my arms would go completely unnoticed. When a five year old looks up and doesn't notice that you're walking backwards, you have achieved much.

gophtc 11-17-2003 05:09 PM

from the science channel, supposedly almost everything you think you are seeing is only from memory, only when you focus on something do you really see it. i guess peripheral vision or your mind telling you to focus on something is the only way you notice details.

its amazing what ppl who have been in accidents with brain damage but perfect vision, cannot see or think they are seeing.

but the most interesting fact is, that people can sense you. i also believe that you telepathically communicate ideas to ppl in a similar way.

NeverBorn 11-17-2003 07:04 PM

I'll make myself invisible..HEY LOOK OVER THERE *runs*

emmdubbs 11-17-2003 07:21 PM

i've done this before..you kinda zone out, and are i your own little world, it's like sleeping with your eyes open, (which really freaks people out)

but as i was reading this, all i could think about was southpark with david blane and jesus...."ready now, turn around...yes all of you"

hobo 11-17-2003 07:50 PM

I know what you mean. If you act like it isn't worth seeing, people won't try to see it.

I have been trying to do this with this post, unsuccessfully so far, to my regret:confused:

taliendo 11-17-2003 10:16 PM

I miss old TFPers! Can we send out a bulk email asking them all to come back. :p Not that I don't love current TFPers, just that we've lost a lot of good folks to attrition over the years...

dlish 06-15-2008 10:50 AM

hey, I'm still here

Wow, evidently, you've been really, really nostalgic lately.

Some of these old threads are kinda cool to read through though.

I can't believe I'm the first person to read this and think "hey, that sounds like an SEP field."

anybody?

What's an SEP field? I don't get it...

Nevermind, I'll just look it up in the guide.

As long as Giant Hamburger sticks around I figure we're doing okay. He's like a rock that we can all look to in times of uncertainty. A juicy, all beef rock with a sesame seed bun.

Leto 06-16-2008 10:33 AM

Just don't panic...

It's a similar process to what one used in school days when trying to avoid a teacher's gaze to contribute something to the class.

for those without a guide handy:

http://nostalgia.wikipedia.org/wiki/SEP_field

SEP field

From the cult favorite The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. It is a concept of invisibility. (And it works on earth!)

The letters stand for "Somebody else's problem". And the idea is that if you want to stay out of sight you surround yourself with an SEP field. That way when the party from which you wish to be hidden looks your way, they won't see you really. Well, they'll likely see you but their minds instantly assert "that's somebody else's problem" and they look beyond you or through you, effectively not seeing you.

Works well on cops if you're speeding but this has yet to be scientifically proven.

Meanwhile, I would like the OP to let us know if he has learned how to fly as well.

no more pointless or crappy than some current threads... such is the currency of the internet. Long live the internet.
