Does saying your own name feel weird?

Is it just me that feels weird when I have to tell someone my name?
eg. When I introduce myself to someone, and say "Hi, my name is Bob" it kinda just makes me cringe.
Is this normal? Does this happen to anyone else??

oberon 11-05-2003 11:08 PM

No, it doesn't make me feel weird. Sounds like you need to practice saying your own name in front of a mirror for a while. :)

End User 11-05-2003 11:24 PM

"Hello everyone, my name is Bob."

Damn, it even feels weird when I'm typing it.

cheerios 11-05-2003 11:44 PM

<-- thinks her name sounds funny

analog 11-06-2003 12:26 AM

Hearing my FULL name makes me cringe. Only my immediate family calls me by my unabbreviated name, everyone else goes by the shortened nickname version.

GakFace 11-06-2003 12:35 AM

hearing my full name would be weird, but thats mainly because I have two middle names, its a rare occasion to have someone say it all.

Macheath 11-06-2003 01:50 AM

Well it only gets officially weird if you start referring to yourself in the third person. Then you're either a weirdo or a presidential candidate whose advisers told them some nonsense about "increased name recognition" or something.

lurkette 11-06-2003 06:43 AM

I met someone else with my name recently, and it's not a terribly common name (Marcy), and it was so weird saying her name all night. I kept having to say "the other Marcy". Strange.

troit 11-06-2003 06:50 AM

Actually my complete full name only contains six letters so a majority of my friends don't call me by my first name but call me by my full name -- so I've got to say no -- Saying my own name is not all that weird at all....

;)

floonine 11-06-2003 07:21 AM

I had an ex-girlfriend that freaked out everytime I said her name, especially when we were talking online. I think its weird to hear your own name when you are talking with someone you have a serious relationship with, but saying my own name to myself isn't too big of a deal imo.

Cynthetiq 11-06-2003 07:53 AM

nope. it's just a word. now someone calling some other name... that's weird.

gabshu 11-06-2003 08:07 AM

It does kinda sound weird to me, but that's just because no one can pronounce my name. I usually just go by a nickname, but I just cringe when Americans try to say my full name.

SabrinaFair 11-06-2003 08:11 AM

I like saying my own name...then again, I like my name.

I don't think it's weird to say the name of someone you're in a relationship with. My parents still call each other by name, and they've been married for 21 years. And I get a chill every time my man says, "Sabrina" in that special voice reserved only for me.

Marcy! That is my absolute favorite name. I wanted to name my daughter that but hubby vetoed it. Just didn't have the same ring for him. I love that name - I'm jealous. My mother wanted to name me Marcy but her mother (who was controlling) didn't want it so she decided on Heather instead.

I had a close friend in college who's name was Heather. It was kinda strange to call someone else by my name. Also when I got married and started using a different last name it felt wierd. Haven't felt odd saying my name in general under normal circumstances. I tend to shy away from mentioning my middle name "Gay" since it almost inevitably gets an odd look.

The_Dude 11-06-2003 08:44 AM

yes, i try to avoid saying my name as much as i possibly can.

it does sound weird.

wannabenakid247 11-06-2003 09:31 AM

I think most people think that when they say their own name. Especially when your parents say it in full instead of your short nickname. That sucks

tokaok 11-06-2003 09:53 AM

nope, but what i do find wierd is have to be around some one with the same name as I.

my isnt to common around here and i only met one other guy with it in the last 5 years.

i kinda felt sorry for 3 guys in grade 2 who were named micheal and in the same class. talk about loss of individuality.

Snoogans 11-06-2003 10:43 AM

I love my name and say it as often as possible, everyone else does too. It's a good name, people seem to get a real kick out of saying it out loud like the kid from "South Park".
I've only met one other person named Timmy in Sweden, so it's pretty unique.

rogue49 11-06-2003 11:31 AM

Nope...too many people have the same name.

TheBrit 11-06-2003 11:34 AM

I think most words feel weird when you say them too much. Much is one. Say much over and over again, say 15 times, and think about what you just did. Eeek.

Eldaire 11-06-2003 12:32 PM

Hi my name is Matt.

*cringes*

a2k 11-06-2003 12:41 PM

I've got a guy moving into my apartment with the same name as me... that could be weird.

skysooner 11-06-2003 01:24 PM

I don't flip out at it, but I have never felt really comfortable saying my name.

gremlinx8 11-06-2003 01:46 PM

Saying my own name is a bit odd, but as much as I don't like to say my name, I hate hearing my voice on tape even more. It's just weird and not what I hear when I speak- it's completely different.

ARTelevision 11-06-2003 03:08 PM

Very much worse than weird. Therefore I do not use it, ever.

b1naryb0r1s 11-06-2003 03:13 PM

It was odd saying my name at first, but now I have had to introduce myself so much recently I am kinda used to it now. So eventually, especially if you're a business major or in business, you will become accustomed to saying it.

Gortexfogg 11-06-2003 03:47 PM

I don't have any problem saying my name. Sometimes it'll seem a little weird like I'm actually a different person than myself when I'll say my name. But most of the time, I just call myself I.

cliv 11-06-2003 04:30 PM

I don't have a problem saying my own name, such as an introduction.
However, I do avoid addressing (by first name) other people that share my first name. For example, I'll say, "Hi Mr. ____" instead of using our common first name.

G_Whiz 11-06-2003 04:31 PM

Not a problem for me. I have to do it so often that it's become routine.

At work we refer to ourselves as "Meetings R Us". We are always in meetings with people who don't know us, so we just get used to introducing ourselves. The harder part is when we have to describe our job or agency. You always have to pause and think about who you're representing at the meeting.

RelaX 11-06-2003 04:57 PM

My name is Boy.
Realliy if I would be embarrased saying my name I would not be able to talk english.

HugAPug 11-06-2003 05:23 PM

For me it's weird because my last name is so...foreign sounding, (it's Finnish) while my first is so plain (Ryan). I sort of feel ripped off that my whole name isn't cool sounding. Also I recently learned I've been basically pronouncing my surname incorrectly. :(
So now everytime I hear it pronounced the incorrect way, I cringe.

Same here. There are way too many people named 'Joe.' I have several family members with the same name. It's just too common.

carpal 11-06-2003 06:53 PM

My last name sounds weird coming from everyone. Not terribly uncommon or hard to pronounce, it just sounds ugly and is difficult not to slur.

TIO 11-06-2003 10:03 PM

Most people call me by my last name. So to me, it feels strange to hear my first name applied to me at all. I have to think carefully sometimes before signing off on letters so that I don't just sign my last name to them :)

Fremen 11-06-2003 10:25 PM

My name is Daniel, nice and ordinary, but when I say it aloud (to my ears at least) it comes out sounding weird and strange.

I love my name, I just don't like saying it.

sandeep 11-06-2003 10:47 PM

I don't mind saying my name, it's just that I usually have to say it twice.

Since it's not a nice normal name, it usually goes something like:
"Hi, I'm sandeep"
"Sandy?"
"No, Sandeep. Sand, and eep. or San, and Deep"
"Oh, okay. Cool name,"

I'd rather just be able to say "I'm joe" "Hello joe"

But then again, I guess the grass is always greener, eh?

HeadyIncognito 11-06-2003 11:02 PM

Wow... I feel almost the exact same way as you do, End User... Seriously, today one of my friends was like "See ya, Ben" and I was like, "Buh?". I just don't really care about names, I guess.

Sleepyjack 11-06-2003 11:20 PM

hmm not so much.

Although theres a guy who i sometimes hang out with and his last name is thompson. So his nickname is Thommo or tommo.
Sometimes i get called tommo, although not too often, but it's sometimes a little dishearting when we're hanging out and someone says tommo and they're actually talking to him and not me :(
I am exaggerating for effect.

anti fishstick 11-06-2003 11:37 PM

YES! i feel weird all the time. especially when i was younger. now it isn't so bad because i've found a way to 'fix' that problem. but every once in awhile, it still sounds weird to say my own name. my last name too.

but for my first name, i just pretend i'm saying janet jackson. without the jackson part ;P

bundy 11-07-2003 02:14 AM

you kind of get used to saying after a year in journo school.
they encourage you to get really comfortable saying it, as well as developing a rhythm... so that ...´this is [enter your name here] for BBC...´ is easy and memorable.

its hard when you kind of have a longish and not overly common name though...

Craven Morehead 11-07-2003 06:26 AM

Not at all embarassing, however it seems like whenever I introduce myself to a girl I have a tendancy to get slapped.

Rabid Bunny 11-07-2003 03:10 PM

I have no trouble saying my name, but it's really hard for anybody to pronounce it. There are about 4 ways my peers say my name, "Dieu".

1) "Dee-yoo"
2) "Deal" <- that's how it's supposed to be pronounced
3) "Dil"
4) "Do"

Most others call me by my last name.

And I would hate to go to France and introduce myself. The chance that I'll speak to a religious fanatic and have him hate/worship me scares me.

tangledweb 11-09-2003 11:41 AM

I have never really thought my name sounded odd when I am saying it. I'm an extrovert so I am used to hearing my own voice.

xxMC 11-11-2003 02:32 AM

no, i refer to myself in the third person all the time.
"well keyshawn ain't throwing the ball, and keyshawn ain't calling the plays"

mingusfingers 11-11-2003 12:18 PM

I don't feel to weird..other than that they never hear it the first time. I've got to repeat it. I also wish I had a more catchy name...eg. John Smith, something like that.

nukeu666 11-12-2003 02:08 PM

every1 in college calls me by my nickname-nuke
i started playing counterstrike in the 1st year...a good number of seniors used got see a freshie-Nukem kicking their butts in cyberspace and now every1 know that name
karan...whose he? oh...u mean nuke

joesmith 11-12-2003 10:57 PM

i hate saying my own name - it always feels weird to hear myself say it - so i try to find the perfect inflection for it... hmm this doesn't help/

j03th3j3w 11-13-2003 12:32 AM

saying my name doesnt sound weird.. but i really like it when ppl say my name... makes me feel important! if you are around anyone and you want to make them feel special... jus say there name when you speak to them... everyone loves to hear there own name!

chavos 11-13-2003 07:22 AM

not really...but one fo my friends practices saying my name with all the disgust and distain that she can put in her voice, so hearing her say it just makes me cringe/crack up all at the same time. That in turn, is an imitation of how one of my ex's would address me, which usually got a cringe too.

meembo 11-13-2003 09:27 AM

"John" -- I hear it , say it, all the time, no big deal

however, different monikers have different effects

Only one person calls me Jack, and I like introducing myself that way whn I'm with him -- likewise with others who have pet names, childhood nicknames, etc.

Cycler 11-25-2003 08:19 PM

It felt weird until I had a good friend with the same name and I got to know him. The only weird thing was leaving messages:<p>"Is Brett there?" "Nope"<p>"Well can you let him know that Brett called, thanks." That was a little weird.

TheShadow 11-25-2003 08:51 PM

I can't stand saying my own name... it feels odd.

And ... oddly ... enough, I don't know why, but I get that same feeling when I'm looking into a mirror. Call me weird, but it's wierd thinking "That's me!".

taliendo 11-25-2003 09:10 PM

not at all, my name is danny -- different and yet common. I like it because its a kiddish name and i'm now an adult, but most of the time i still feel like a kid. very fitting.

amonkie 11-25-2003 09:35 PM

My full name is shorter than most people's first name, so due to an occupation that requires introducing myself a LOT, I like that my name is short and takes little effort to say!

wilbjammin 11-25-2003 09:51 PM

Typical exchange

"Uh... hi, I'm Will"

"What was that again?"

"Will... I'm Will"

"Hi Will, nice to meet you"

I don't know why, but my name doesn't seem to register when people hear it the first time.

I don't think my name is that weird, considering it is used all of the time in everyday English... but that gets annoying. I dread saying my name because of that question - "What was that again?"

feelgood 11-25-2003 10:26 PM

I can't stand my first name. It's Jeffrey and I never never ever let anybody call me by that except my grandmother and my ex-girlfriend. Ususally, some people call me either Jeff or Hunter which is my second middle name.

People just have a different feeling when it comes to saying their own full name outloud. Some people like it, some don't. For those of you who like to say it outloud, it might be due to the fact that it's popular, or people can remember it. For those who don't like to, it could be attributed to name calling, not very popular

Well yes... but I cringe when someone says my name, not just when I say it. So I'm going to change it.

wry1 11-26-2003 02:32 AM

I usually wind up with a minor identity crisis whenever I visit the family.....they are the only ones who use my first name - I got sick and tired of people messing it up (as well as some jokes that got old after about 2 minutes in Elementary School), so several years ago I abbreviated my first name and started going by my middle name. So everybody I deal with - from professors to fellow students to employees - calls me "Mike". But not my family.

And no, I'm not going to tell you what my first name is! I'm just going to make do with the minor confusion which accompanies my arrival at Mom & Dad's, as well as my return to school......

RHix613 11-26-2003 05:37 AM

I have to introduce myself everyday to someone new, so I'm use to it. I'm a high school soccer coach and having to refer to myself as Coach Hix really makes me cringe.

I'm with lurkette - I only have trouble saying my name when I'm referring to someone else with the same name. It's just weird. It inevitably gives me the giggles and I have to work hard to keep from sounding like a fool.
