Not at all embarassing, however it seems like whenever I introduce myself to a girl I have a tendancy to get slapped.

I have no trouble saying my name, but it's really hard for anybody to pronounce it. There are about 4 ways my peers say my name, "Dieu".

1) "Dee-yoo"
2) "Deal" <- that's how it's supposed to be pronounced
3) "Dil"
4) "Do"

Most others call me by my last name.

And I would hate to go to France and introduce myself. The chance that I'll speak to a religious fanatic and have him hate/worship me scares me.

I have never really thought my name sounded odd when I am saying it. I'm an extrovert so I am used to hearing my own voice.

I don't feel to weird..other than that they never hear it the first time. I've got to repeat it. I also wish I had a more catchy name...eg. John Smith, something like that.

not really...but one fo my friends practices saying my name with all the disgust and distain that she can put in her voice, so hearing her say it just makes me cringe/crack up all at the same time. That in turn, is an imitation of how one of my ex's would address me, which usually got a cringe too.

"John" -- I hear it , say it, all the time, no big deal

however, different monikers have different effects

Only one person calls me Jack, and I like introducing myself that way whn I'm with him -- likewise with others who have pet names, childhood nicknames, etc.

It felt weird until I had a good friend with the same name and I got to know him. The only weird thing was leaving messages:<p>"Is Brett there?" "Nope"<p>"Well can you let him know that Brett called, thanks." That was a little weird.

I can't stand saying my own name... it feels odd.

And ... oddly ... enough, I don't know why, but I get that same feeling when I'm looking into a mirror. Call me weird, but it's wierd thinking "That's me!".

not at all, my name is danny -- different and yet common. I like it because its a kiddish name and i'm now an adult, but most of the time i still feel like a kid. very fitting.

My full name is shorter than most people's first name, so due to an occupation that requires introducing myself a LOT, I like that my name is short and takes little effort to say!

Typical exchange

"Uh... hi, I'm Will"

"What was that again?"

"Will... I'm Will"

"Hi Will, nice to meet you"

I don't know why, but my name doesn't seem to register when people hear it the first time.

I don't think my name is that weird, considering it is used all of the time in everyday English... but that gets annoying. I dread saying my name because of that question - "What was that again?"

I can't stand my first name. It's Jeffrey and I never never ever let anybody call me by that except my grandmother and my ex-girlfriend. Ususally, some people call me either Jeff or Hunter which is my second middle name.

People just have a different feeling when it comes to saying their own full name outloud. Some people like it, some don't. For those of you who like to say it outloud, it might be due to the fact that it's popular, or people can remember it. For those who don't like to, it could be attributed to name calling, not very popular

Is this normal? Does this happen to anyone else??
Well yes... but I cringe when someone says my name, not just when I say it. So I'm going to change it.

I usually wind up with a minor identity crisis whenever I visit the family.....they are the only ones who use my first name - I got sick and tired of people messing it up (as well as some jokes that got old after about 2 minutes in Elementary School), so several years ago I abbreviated my first name and started going by my middle name. So everybody I deal with - from professors to fellow students to employees - calls me "Mike". But not my family.

And no, I'm not going to tell you what my first name is! I'm just going to make do with the minor confusion which accompanies my arrival at Mom & Dad's, as well as my return to school......

I have to introduce myself everyday to someone new, so I'm use to it. I'm a high school soccer coach and having to refer to myself as Coach Hix really makes me cringe.

I'm with lurkette - I only have trouble saying my name when I'm referring to someone else with the same name. It's just weird. It inevitably gives me the giggles and I have to work hard to keep from sounding like a fool.
