Anyone Up to the Challenge? OB!

Anyone know of two businesses in the same industry that are doing the opposite of each other economically/financially?

For my Organizational Behavior class, we have to do a huge project involving two businesses. One has to be doing excellent compared to the other (financially, etc.) and the other has to be doing considerably less-as-well than the first business. I've racked my brain for answers, and I've come up with nothing. It can be any business that has a decent amount of financial information available to the public.

Sadly enough, the following cannot be chosen: Disney, Dell Computer, Southwest Airlines, K Mart, or Wal Mart.


There goes a what I was thinking of. Anyway, anyone have any ideas?

I was thinking Blockbuster video for the business that's doing good, but I can't think of any video businesses that are doing bad.

ToysR Us - vs FAO Schwarz (I think they're in bankruptcy)

that's some good stuff - are you sure Toys R Us is doing good though? I remember them doing badly in the last couple of years (but maybe it isn't as bad as FAO)

what about some of the other airlines- Jet Blue (which I think is pretty solid) vs United who's back in bankruptcy .

has a listing of all companies by industry -

By subscription only, they have the Boneyard, which lists all mergers and such -- (I don't havea sub there, but maybe someone else does) WOuld give you some ideas of companies.

This is a pretty tough assingment. Sounds like fun though What's your major, Redjake? I remember taking Orginizational Behavior for my Marketing degree.

Air Canada vs WestJet. With Aircanada losing business, I can bet a fair amount that most of their customer is moving to WestJet

I did case studies on both companies back when i was doing my MBA...very interesting companies and very very different...especially financially.

try car manufacturers. Like Nissan vs Toyota for example. Or Hundai or Kia vs Scion. Until recently, Nissan was doing pretty bad but they've recently started to recover. There are other examples of car companies teetering on the brink while Toyota, Honda, and a few others keeps truckin along.

Can't do those...he mentioned it in the header post. I'm in his group for this project as well. I think we've finally decided on two videogame publishers/developers...Electronic Arts and Acclaim.

BadNick: those are the obvious choices, but the companies we do can't be part of a bigger company, and the companies also can't be corporations unless both are nearly identical. In other words, we can't do Volvo vs Blah, because Ford owns Volvo. Can't do Mercury because Ford owns Mercury. We basically can't do Ford because its financial information would be very hard to come by with it seperated from Volvo and Mercury's data and vice versa.

Needless to say, this teacher is making the guidelines too strict! Both companies have to be in the same genre. Both have to be doing well or poor because of the employees. They can't be corporations or subdivisions and they have to post extremely detailed financial information to the public.

Yeah, after convincing myself again, I think we'll do Acclaim vs Electronic Arts.

You might want to go to Yahoo Finance and search by industry, pick the one with the highest and lowest market valuations. Otherwise, I have several years of Economist magazines that I could look through...
