new rolling stone hot list, should TFP be be on it?
I'm always fascinated by the rolling stone hot lists. Some of the stuff I've never heard of and some of it I've known about for a long while.
Anyway would you want TFP on a Rolling Stone Hot List or something like it? Or do you think it would be just too much exposure, creating too many newbies and killing the board? |
i don't read rolling stone, maybe you need to give us an example for those that don't happen to read that magazine.
maybe you should even list what the new rolling stone hot list currently happens to be.. |
Sorry, no real link to the hot list section of the mag, they make you buy a copy for that. But here's a link to the issue:
http://www.rollingstone.com/magazine/default.asp It's the one with Britney Spears on the cover in her underwear. The Hot List is just Rolling Stone's list of what's gaining popularity in all of pop culturedom. It's a general as that. They usually have some actors on the list, maybe a model, a couple bands, and past that anything really. What's hot in art, what's hot on the net, the hot trend in fashion, hot addiction, ect. Samples: Hot Actress- Scarlett Johansson Hot Pipe(as in to smoke with)- The Raydiator Hot Athlete- James "Bubba" Stewart, motocross Hot Retro Brew- Grain Belt Premium Beer Hot Magazine- Ready Made Hot Cyber Thugs- Earthstation 5, a p2p portal Hot Gadget- Nokia N-Gage |

No way. I would prefer to keep it obscure rather than suffer the "farkification" of TFP.
|
Same reason as lurkette. There'd probably be lots of people that are going to be asses and it wouldn't be worth it.
|
Ditto, she got to my reason before I did...scary.

Even if a bunch of assholes do show up, wouldn't it be worth it to get the few new interesting people here? Afterall, the assholes don't stay long. They make their stink and either leave voluntarily, or are removed. I'm for it. |
Earthstation 5? Hot? Oh dear!
Maybe we don't need to be on the list that desparately... http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/showthr...threadid=24213 :) |
Too much exposure = lack of identity. The mods already put in too much time to keep it clean, how about adding about 30,000 new members, diluting the boards. We'd loose our intimacy. Shhh, keep TFP quiet.
|
Yeah, I agree with the general opinion here, we don't need all the exposure and the people it would bring.
|
Joining the general concensus; people referred by an impersonal source may not be what we're looking for.
If we really want to get new members, everyone here should just recommend the TFP to a friend. |

With each entry there's a little blurb about it and rolling stone even says in the blurb that the program sucks. Mainly it made the Hot List because the company is based in a Palestinian Refugee camp where international copyright laws don't apply. And the President of ES5 claims that they're going to bring down the etertainment industry.........uh-huh. |

I have to say I was brought here by my SO who got here from Fark...and I agree it seems it meant joining around the same time as a bunch of the other n00bs...but I am still glad I did! As for Rolling Stone...I can't see that being a good thing on the whole. Maybe in a smaller publication...but we really don't want to put that much pressure on the mods yadda yadda...I will stop now...it's mostly been said already..and I am just new myself!!
Also!! Thanks BUNDY!! *bows for herself...then bows to bundy!! ;) |
Hey I came here through fark... how else did you guy find out about this site? I know that fark made a lot of disruption, but it also brought a whole new wave of people to the community. There are already programs and system to get rid of the unwanted so why not?
|
I would like it,
it would bring a larger more diverse group of people I think we could handle it, we have a good staff on hand. The more, the merrier. Just keep your nose clean.;) |
I don't like the prospect of an even larger crowd. I like the board how it is...
a community built on word-of-mouth feels more intimate than a fark phenomenon. Sure it would bring in a fresh crowd, but what percent of that crowd would actually make a quality contribution to our forums? Would we really want every mother farker out there posting here? |
hmmm...
I'm thinking that it is already a bit difficult to navigate ALL the diverse forums. Not that I'm interested in all of them but there are some great conversations here. What gets difficult is when the forums start to scroll too quickly making it hard to keep up. It wouldn't be just the mods but the admins who would have to do extra work just to handle the load... |
What is the whole FARK thing?
Must have happened before I found TFP. |
I found TFP cause of Fark, but it almost sounds like there was one time when huge amounts of people came over from Fark. I don't think I'd be part of that, but I may have.
I think the exposure that Rolling Stone gave would be harmful in the end; it'd lead too many people to the site that are just around to cause other people grief. TFP still gets newbies pretty regularly as it is, right? Some are bad, some are good... the good ones stay. The bad ones quickly seem to weed themselves out, not causing a major distrubance. TFP is a great, close community right now. If Rolling Stone "linked" to us, we'd probably get a lot of new great people, but we'd also get a ton of bad people.. degrading the quality of the board. That's a long-winded way to say I think it'd be bad, but I can't knock it too much. I found this place from advertisement myself. Like it's been said, mods and admins would be overloaded as well. Plus there's the bandwidth and upkeep costs. I don't know what Halx's money situation is like, but he may not be able to handle a bunch of extra traffic, even if it is primarily text. |
My intent with the TFP is to bring my message to as many people as I can. You guys should not be afraid of POPULARIZATION. You should, however, be afraid of BASTARDIZATION. That's one of the things about my PROJECT, though. My goal is to create an environment where everyone works together to be content, no matter how many people there are. The general rules will stay the same and we won't kneel to any societal standards that we have not all ready adopted. That's called bull-headed progression.
Dont be afraid of the spotlight. I for one would like a public stage for my philosophy. |

Geez, I can barely keep up with the number of posters on this board right now. A link from Rolling Stone might bury me.
