Theres nothing more unsettling than hearing that 6 IT guys were in your cube the previous night.
Sure there is some huge virus running rampant in our systems. But 6 guys... my cube. I feel all................ dirty |

Some folks said they were in here for over an hour.
I hope I didn't break the work system.... that would get me in trouble. |

I hear ya, man. I'm always nervous that some IT guy is going to choose to spy on ME one day, and see that I'm not always working at work.
|
Unless ordered by your supervisor, "most" IT ppl won't care one way or the other that you're not working. And while there are indeed computer literate users, there are much much MUCH more illiterate users. When I was the only IT guy in a small paper i HATED having to go wipe a system because someone decided they were going to dl most of the spyware in the known world, or even worse ( by company policy ) someone decided they liked the porn they were surfing so much they just HAD to save it to the drive, cache can be cleared, and company policy was "it could be renamed or saved elsewhere, so wipe the system. 2 hours of my time later I had the OS with all sw up and running and was typing out my email to the user informing him that all company machines are propery of the company and cannot be used to search and save explicit content. While I personally didn't object to the pictures, that is what HOME is for.

Laptop :-)

lame.. 6 people? jeez... what did you have a funny file on there or something? 6 people 1 hour... 6 man hours.... wasted..
|
I am one of 4 IT guys at work.
We generally don't give a fuck as long as what you do doesn't prevent business from getting done. I'm not saying that most places are anywhere near as forgiving as we are, but not all jobs are out to get you. But there was this one guy who set up his home email to autoforward to work and work email to autoforward to home. He got spanked pretty hard. |
Actually, I make habit not to surf porn or save porn here at work. I do spend WAY too much time online... put thats just posting here... And I do a lot of weird google image searches.
The worst thing I have on my comp is probably too many Mp3s. I keep em on my drive and not the main though. I just don't like that for some reason it took 6 people over an hour to work on my comp. I I refuse to download "free programs" no realplayer for this playa |
6 people in a cubicle for an hour hovering over a computer? can you say 'geek orgy'?
|
definitely some sketchy shit butif nothin is messed up i wouldnt worry about it much. you could just ask or call the IT dept. and ask what the problems was.
|
who owns the system, and for that matter, the pc?
|
First thing I did when I started where I work is format the disk and install FreeBSD. Everything I do is over SSH (even surfing the net, uses a proxy that is tunneled to SSH at an offsite location).
People don't realize how trivial it is to sniff LAN traffic. |

See I'm not paranoid that they are going to bust me w/ anything. I'm clean.. well as clean as I can be. All I have is a ton of goofy shit, crazy pics and some Mp3s. No porn, no shareware, no nuttin. But no one has told me why my comp got so much attention. |

However, maintaining the system is my job. I'm going to have to log onto employee's workstations from time to time. And sometimes I'll remote in. Again, doesn't mean I'm snooping, I'm just doing what I need to keep the system flowing. Only twice have I ever had someone complain about me being on "their" computer. I just reminded them, it wasn't their computer, it was my computer. Well...that and I changed their password requirements to a minimum of twelve characters, not repeatable and had to be changed once a week. |
Fuck... Im friends w/ all the guys in IT. And I know the main reason they were in my cube was to contain the SoBig virus.
But what they did in 20 minutes in everyone elses cube took hours in mine... hence why I'm asking them all whats up. But I walk in this morning and everyone is giving me shit about how long and how many guys were in my cube... laughing... at what I don't know. I can't get a straight answer out of these guys either. |

Hell, that blows my theory. Most IT guys are drawn to porn like...well...like geeks to porn. Or so I hear. I'm sure there are exceptions. Like myself, for instance. I hardly even noticed when the TB disappeared from TFP. |
My computer has a little icon that turns colors whenever the IT folks are capable of seeing my screen's contents and manipulating the computer itself.
Kinda creepy when they take control to fix something. I just sit there and watch the machine do its stuff. |

theres got to be some joke about that, like ´how many IT dudes does it take snoop one PC??¨... as for the snooping, that sounds like an invasion... you may well have been violated. no wonder you feel dirty. |
I am an IT guy, and usually something has to be going wrong if there are 2 (or more) of us looking at the same computer. Sometimes, we will find a cube to hang out in, if most of us are done with our work, and waiting for 1-2 people to finish up in the area. When that happens, we are usually just chatting in the cube. Besides if we really wanted to snoop on the pc, i would take the pc name, and just use the "administrative" shares available to snoop, and the user probably wouldn't notice..... Of course I don't have time to do that, but it is fun to fix problems this way (while the user is on the phone), and have them wondering what the actual fix is :)

Now now, I am that IT snoop.
6 of them? Didja have some good porn or something? Besides, there is nothing on your machine that we didn't already know is there. |

When I did IT work for the public school system a few years ago, we had to snoop and make sure kids weren't keeping porn, huge amounts of music, or illegal stuff in their folders. |
Another snoop checking in.
Where I work occasionally we'll browse through the directories to make sure everything is on the up and up. Any huge porn or music collections and we notify the users about inappropriate use. It posted policy and we try to be subtle when we notify users. Unless something is really wrong and affecting operations it ends there. Nobody further up is notified. And it's only gone to HR for disciplinary action once that I've heard about in 5 years I worked for this company. I don't really like snooping around personal directories but I guess it comes with business. A lot of users can use a lot of resources and it costs somebody money and adds up. At another very small business I worked at before it didn't matter. I wouldn't look unless someone they asked me to because they were having a problem. There was more then enough resources and the enviornment was such that nobody was really going to abuse anything or cause any trouble. I know everyone doesn't work the whole time. Neither do I. I do what needs to be done. I don't want my actions to negatively effect somebody else or the company. But if there's extra time I'll goof off some too. |
Six people??? I wish my cube was BIG enough for six people!!! There would have to be be one hanging from the ceiling, a couple sitting under the desk, etc.
