Fort Worth man killed by lightning

Body found near school track; family says he went to jog

07:03 AM CDT on Thursday, August 14, 2003

By LAURIE FOX / The Dallas Morning News

FORT WORTH – A 19-year-old man out for an evening jog was killed by a lightning strike in southwest Fort Worth late Tuesday or early Wednesday morning.

Relatives said John Adam Rauer left home about 10 p.m. Tuesday to exercise at the running track at Southwest High School. His body was found at the school, and his parents were notified about 4 a.m. Wednesday.

The Tarrant County medical examiner's office on Wednesday ruled his death "high voltage electrocution due to lightning strike."

Violent storms had rolled through the area that evening, and his family said his car seat was reclined as if Mr. Rauer had decided to wait for the rain to pass before starting his jog. His body was found between the track and his car, authorities said.

"He got off work, came home and said he was going jogging," said David Rauer, an uncle. "He was avid about his health."

Fort Worth school district officials said Mr. Rauer was a 2002 graduate of Southwest High School.

Family members said he worked at a nearby Game Stop and had recently begun taking classes at Tarrant County College.

Lt. Kent Worley, a spokesman for the Fort Worth Fire Department, said the unpredictable weather this week should make more people consider their safety when outdoors.

"You don't even have to have the clouds directly above you or near you for lightning to strike," he said. "Just because the storm has passed or the storms haven't arrived yet doesn't mean the danger is gone.

"People need to be careful and keep an eye on skies."
Sometimes, you just can't win.

Dammit. I've always wanted the power to smite people. Some deities get all the luck.....

Cynthetiq 08-14-2003 06:28 AM

goes to show you that living the healthy life doesn't mean you'll have a long one...first Flo-Jo and now this one... maybe He doesn't like runners? maybe he's a couch potato and pressed the *strike lighting* button...

Vyk 08-14-2003 07:51 AM

ouch. that's a hell of a way to go

theinfamous 08-14-2003 07:55 AM

eat right, exercise....die anyway. poor guy.

curbserved 08-14-2003 08:40 AM

i was going to say something mean and stupid, but then i noticed that he worked at a game stop. mourn the death of a purveyor of video games.

denim 08-14-2003 08:45 AM

I wonder if it would have made a difference if he'd had a jogging partner? I mean, okay he's struck by lightning. People survive that sometimes. If there'd been someone else there to restart him, could he have been one of them? No way to tell from this article.

Fozzie_Bear 08-14-2003 08:51 AM

Lightning freaks me out.. when I was younger my best friends house was hit by lightning, and one of the results was that his bed caught on fire, while he was asleep..... everyone was ok in the end though

Tex 08-14-2003 09:08 AM

It's amazing how much random damage a lightning strike can have. A couple of days ago here in the Los Angeles area, a 9 year old boy was struck by lightning and pretty much just shrugged it off. He was taken to a hospital, but he was up and talking in the ambulence. Sometimes people are just lucky I guess.

BentNotTwisted 08-14-2003 09:22 AM

This is what happens when you find someone's cell phone and you don't return it!

micah67 08-14-2003 10:43 AM

Or a wallet with $300 in it!

kalisto_911 08-14-2003 12:03 PM

Wow, pretty scary! YOU could be next!

marshall26 08-14-2003 12:28 PM

it's a good thing i don't jog

skysooner 08-14-2003 12:41 PM

My wife has a good friend in Kansas whose daughter was killed by lightning. The weird thing was the storm was about 10 miles to the west. It was one of those weird events where the lightning hit well ahead of the storm. At the time she was killed, she was hugging her new boyfriend who was 6'7" and was the tallest thing in the area. He died as well. They were standing in the middle of a bunch of friends in a parking lot when it happened.

Ashton 08-14-2003 12:49 PM

Mmmmm, that would have been something to see........ wonder if the lightning blew off one of his shoes, My high school electronic's teacher told a story about some guy that got zapped by a high voltage transformer...... the juice went through his arm, down his body and blew his boot off on it's way to the ground.......

Nisses 08-14-2003 01:11 PM

erm...Whatcho talkin' bout Forks?

That's not exactly something planned or to be prevented :)

MikeyChalupa 08-14-2003 08:24 PM

If this story is NOT the truth, may I be struck by lightning...

the moral of this story? how bout people with these type A exercise freak personalities need to chill out. ive often wondered aloud to my wife as we drive down a city street where all the joggers are, what kind of psychos are these people? it can be 10 degrees outside with freezing rain and some fool will be trying to jog. there can be a tornado warning and some fool will be trying to jog. there could be an ozone alert day at 105 degrees and some jackass will still be trying to jog! when will these people learn their own limitations? when they die.
my ex is one of those - goes out in any weather. it clears his head. Too bad he does jog in thunder sorms though.

eltardo 08-14-2003 09:10 PM

My father-in-laws best friend was killed by lightning while out jogging. My understanding was that it was a fairly clear day and BAM! He's toast.

Xell101 08-14-2003 09:29 PM

There is a guy who has been hit by lightening over 6 times. I can't remember the number, but I think some deity or something with weather control (Soviets). One lightening bolt was on its way down, said "Fuck it" took a right, went straight through the truck's door, and hit the guy, I think that one made four.

Xell101 08-14-2003 09:30 PM

There was a space shuttle that got blown up as a result of a lightening bolt from 10 miles away. That is why they are so picky about launch day weather.

Jesus Pimp 08-15-2003 12:16 AM

Maybe "God" was trying to tell the guy that it was too hot yesterday to jog.

What? There are only two space shuttles that have ever blown up, and neither had anything to do with lightning. Maybe a rocket, or something. I'd like to know what specifically you're talking about.

Gortexfogg 08-15-2003 05:04 AM

After reading this article, I will never again feel comforatable out in stormy weather again. Thanks a lot God.

JumpinJesus 08-15-2003 06:59 AM

"I'm a healthy, healthy man! I jog 5 miles a day! I'm going to live a very, very - "

***ZAP***

Just goes to show, you never know when you're number's up. Why waste time jogging when you could be looking at boobies?

If I'm remembering correctly, there was an Apollo launch that was hit by lightning (as it went through the clouds). Suddenly, Mission Control was getting lots of fuzzy data at one of the most critical times in the mission. They almost had to scrub the mission, but steely-eyed missle man, John Aaron asked the astronauts to reboot something and everything went back to normal.

And if I got all this info completely correct, I'll be as suprised as anyone.

Troublebot 08-15-2003 07:15 AM

Holy crap, I was right. I am sooooo smrat!

Shit it wasn't a shuttle, your right on that, was a satelite or a probe, nothing too important. I saw it on the discovery channel a year or two ago on the same show as the human lightening rod.

"Hey! You can't smoke on school grounds!"
OH nevermind

Fire 08-17-2003 02:56 AM

Hey- just goes to show you- you never know- everybody dies, so LIVE

Willy 08-17-2003 09:28 AM

This is why I don't jog. No one has ever been struck by lightning while sitting on the couch, eating cheetos and watching porno. It does turn your dick orange sometimes though.
