Workworkwork...
You have to work six months of a year. You are offered two options: either work every day for six months and then you're allowed the next six months free - or you work the whole year every other day.
You have to work 8 hours a day. Would you be able to pull off 6/6 months or would you rather choose the other option? |
work every other day. If you have 6 months off...it will be impossible look return.
I can barely drag my behind back to work after a 6 day vacation. We have the option of doing 4 ten-hour days instead of working 5 a week. A few people tried it as it seemed pretty cool to have a 3-day weekend. Yeeeahhhh.....nobody is still working the 4-day shift. |
Everyday for six months if it were possible. I would do a four day work week in a heartbeat if it was an option.
I typically look forward to getting back to work after a vacation to get my routine back. |
I Might do the 6 month stint.
In 1979-1982, to drive to work, come home and find a place to park would take 2 1/2 hours. I had the option, the last year, to do the four day week and took it gladly. |
Not as easy as it sounds but if forced, I'd do the six months. Definitely requires a strong focus to keep your eye on the prize.
Besides, the every other day thing would totally be messing with my head. I had a split schedule once (my two weekly days off were NOT together!) and found that one day off was not sufficient for me to recharge. The big prize (six months) would serve as a stronger motivator for me. |
I'd work the 6 months and take the other 6 months off.
This leaves room to get another job for that time or to jump into some personal project that you couldn't focus on as much if you had to work every other day. |
I just completed six months at my job, and let me tell you, six months goes by fast. I imagine that it would go by even faster if you were working every day. I've had times in my life where I was working 7 days a week. Some weeks I work six days a week, but with one day being part-time. So I would choose the six months/six months.

I don't think I'd be able to tolerate working seven days per week, 30 days/month for the six months of work. I manage money for pension funds, and although some managers do tend to churn too much, things could really go to hell with six months of complete inattention. Also, by the time I went back after six months off I would be hopelessly out of touch with the markets, unless I kept up on my own time, which would effectively negate the six months off part of this. This wouldn't work for me.
This scheme would also run afoul of wage/hour laws, although exempt self-employed persons could maybe make it work. My dad owns a hardware store with about a dozen employees who can work a staggered five day week. This week M-F, next week Tue-Sat, third week M-F, etc. This results in alternating three day weekends with one day weekend and most employees choose this schedule. Lindy |
Become a teacher, they get summers off.
When I worked part-time last year...I had a weird schedule of Tuesday and Friday off. Hated skipping Tuesday but loved the Fridays off. |

I would do the 6 month on/6 month off thing. I would even do 5 months of 10 hour days on/ 7 months off. I would be able to get some projects done, travel, and read some books. |
Wouldn't matter. With either option I would just flat out lose my mind before the first half of the year was up.
Although the every other day would take a bit longer than the every day option, but not by much. |

If I could do the 6 on/6 off setup and earn the same income I earn now, I'd use the 6 months off to do personal projects. I'd try writing fiction full time during those months knowing that I have financial security and time, which is a perfect environment for working in the arts. Of course, much of that could include travel and reading. Research, you know. |
6 months on, 6 months off, provided it's still possible to take a personal day or sick day. When I work on political campaigns, it's 7 days a week for months at a time, and at least 10 hours a day. Eight hours a day would be a breeze by comparison.
|
I'd definitely do 6 months on, 6 months off, with the same conditions SecretMethod mentioned - I'd be able to take a day off if I got really sick or had a serious family emergency.
|
Do the 6/6.
For 9 months of the year I work 12 days on...2 days off. For much of it they are 9 hour days, but do get stretches which last a week or so where I do 14 hour days. You get used to it. |
