How long...

does it take you to fall asleep. I've been told I'm out before my head hits the pillow. I once fell asleep while floating in the pool without a raft. I can float without sinking.

ForgottenKnight 04-21-2003 08:23 PM

For me it depend on how many late nighters I've had...sometimes I'll fall asleep before my head hits the pillow, but most of the time it's within 10 minutes.

charliex 04-21-2003 08:31 PM

avg about 3 hours

SecretMethod70 04-21-2003 09:15 PM

10-15 minutes. When I choose to sleep, I'm gone. And when I don't choose to sleep, sometimes I'm still gone if I'm tired :p

Kyp 04-21-2003 09:18 PM

Probably 1 - 4 hours, depending on a lot of different things.

Somenosuke 04-21-2003 09:19 PM

Anywhere from 5 minutes to 3 hours. On average.

phoenix1002 04-21-2003 09:32 PM

I'm usually asleep within 5 minutes, less if i'm really tired.

I think the strangest place I've fallen asleep would have to be standing up, leaning against the mast of a 50' sailboat while we were sailing. I was just exhausted, and we were doing some navigation belowdecks, and I leaned against the mast, and the next thing I knew, the other people were waking me up.

Anyone else have funny falling asleep in odd places stories?

Sluggin 04-21-2003 09:50 PM

In the last week? Anytime between 3 hours and never. Usually.. anytime between 10 minutes and 2 hours, although normally near the beginning of that time span.

scapegoat 04-21-2003 09:50 PM

right away usually..... i can ususlly put myself to sleep too :P

TaLoN 04-21-2003 09:53 PM

it used to take me hours. now i either drink or smoke marijuana or both. in dreamland in less than 5 minutes

BBtB 04-21-2003 09:56 PM

I've read if it takes you more then 20 minutes then you have a sleeping disorder. That is of course saying 20 minutes of sitting in the dark with your head on the pillow. It normally takes me about 25 minutes. More if i've been smoking pot (mostly because I get incredibly hot when I try to sleep while high... anyone else get this?)

World's King 04-21-2003 11:37 PM

A few hours... I don't really keep track

zizdog69 04-21-2003 11:40 PM

Yup, 10-15 sounds just about right to me. I try and remember what time I last looked at before I go to bed, but when I wake up, I foget all about it!

Acoustica 04-21-2003 11:48 PM

It usually takes me about 45 minutes or so to fall asleep. It sucks, because my girlfriend is out after about 10 minutes, and I like to toss and turn before I finally get comfortable. Don't tell her - but I guess this is my excuse not to cuddle with her :)

rs8001 04-21-2003 11:57 PM

When I was still under 20 years old it'd normally take me at least an hour or more to get to sleep. Now it takes less than 5 minutes. I have no idea what changed but I sure do like it this way better.

oane 04-22-2003 01:04 AM

half an hour to four-five hours! Often the body "sleeps" but I can trace every unconscious thought in the mind. Freaky.

sngx1275 04-22-2003 01:08 AM

probably 30-45 minutes. less if I'm drunk (obviously)

frenik 04-22-2003 01:56 AM

About 10-20 minutes on average, depending on how tired I am. I love the nights when I can just lay my head down and pass right out, but that usually means I'm dead tired and the amount of sleep I'm gonna get isn't gonna do. :(

rock_bottom 04-22-2003 04:07 AM

Usually 15-45 minutes. It used to be worse, but now I seem to be much better about it. Guess I'm getting old.

Daval 04-22-2003 04:16 AM

15-45 minutes for me too. my wife is snoring within minutes of climbing into bed.

Peetster 04-22-2003 04:24 AM

Minutes. I'm usually beat, so I'm out like a light.

ratbastid 04-22-2003 04:28 AM

It takes me twenty minutes or half an hour of reading, then five or ten minutes of shut-eye.

spectre 04-22-2003 04:46 AM

Depends on how tired I am, but on average, it's about 2-3 hours.

tommyboy 04-22-2003 05:32 AM

i usually read for about 15 minutes and that puts me out everytime. sometimes i wake up in the middle of the nite with the lite still on and the book on the floor.

Spidey 04-22-2003 05:32 AM

It really depends on the situation for all people. Firstly there is the sleeping pattern of the person. If they regularly sleep at a certain time, then the brain will recognise that that time is used for rest and therefore making it quicker for the person to fall asleep.
On the Extreme side is the people who sleep at random hours. For people like these its a matter of sleeping when the brain gets tired. Thats why people can take up to 3 hours to fall asleep, the brain doesn't seem to recognise that its the time for rest and therefore continue to function until you tire out. Explains why people tend to have so many things on their minds if they can't fall asleep. :)

Grondar 04-22-2003 05:34 AM

Once I lay down and try to sleep, I am usually out within five minutes. :)

Waking up as easily is a different matter entirely.

sixate 04-22-2003 11:01 AM

It depends, but usually within 10 minutes of me jumping in bed I'll fall asleep.

Fly 04-22-2003 11:10 AM

i can fall asleep at the drop of....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

double 04-22-2003 11:20 AM

I usually have difficulties falling a sleep, because when it gets quiet and theres no distractions my mind can freely start living its own life and so i have to follow my mind in its twists and turns a bit before i can fall a sleep...

paddyjoe 04-22-2003 11:23 AM

I'm gone in minutes if the cat is leaning up against me purring

rockogre 04-22-2003 11:24 AM

Sometimes I don't even remember laying down, then it's morning.

i8one2 04-22-2003 01:03 PM

1-2 hours

gibber71 04-22-2003 01:27 PM

1 hour almost to the minute and wake up within a 10 minute period in the morning.

sierra2774 04-22-2003 05:01 PM

It takes me about 10-15 minutes to fall asleep, unless of course I take my Tylenol PM, then I am out instantly.

ARTelevision 04-22-2003 05:16 PM

17 minutes.

Angel 04-22-2003 05:31 PM

Two words: Chronic Insomniac....
Right now I could rage on in a long rant regarding my lack of sleep. Instead, I will quietly let those two words answer your question.

pickledaddy 04-22-2003 05:43 PM

Several hours. I was actually diagnosed with insomnia (along with other things I won't mention ;) ) and am on sleepint pills.

arael 04-22-2003 05:48 PM

it's either 5 minutes or a few hours. never in between. I either fall asleep right away or can't fall asleep at all for a long time

Cycler 04-22-2003 05:57 PM

Minutes or hours depending on the amount of strain and stress.

Spungfoo 04-22-2003 06:00 PM

It takes me at least an hour, sometimes up to 3 or 4. The worst nights are when I start to doze off then my brain suddenly jars itself wide awake for some reason.

Gebbinn 04-22-2003 06:03 PM

I once fell asleep in the middle of a sentence, it was when I was in the army in germany, we had been going since 2am, and it was about 4 in the afternoon, my squad leader was talking to me about his car, and I fell asleep literally in the middle of a sentence, he couldnt believe it.

*Nikki* 04-22-2003 06:05 PM

Way to fucking long.

The "what if's" always try to come get in bed with me.

Unless of course I have someone to knock me out.

gov135 04-22-2003 06:10 PM

Minutes now. Used to take a lot longer. Now it doesn't. I'm not sure why.

taog 04-22-2003 06:24 PM

Now, this will keep you up!!!!!!!

Think about falling asleep tonight, and try to fall asleep as quick as you can!!!!!

I bet some people will be up for a long time. I know i will be.

As for how fast i fall asleep..

It depends on a lot of things.

If i had a great day, and i am not overly excited about something, i will fall asleep in 5 - 30 minutes, depending on how tired i am.

Lately i have been learning php (i already know a lot about asp and perl, so i decided to learn php). I am very excited about creating php scripts to sell to people, and i keep thinking about different things i can add to make my scripts better. My mind races and thus, i can't fall asleep right away.

If i am stressed out about something and i can't stop thinking about it, i tend to lose a lot of sleep.

Ex. When my ex and i broke up and all that bullshit happened, i didn't sleep for 4 days straight. That's the longest i have ever gone. I also cried at work in the bathroom after someone asked me what was wrong. I was really hurt, and now that i think about it, i should have gone to get help with trying to get things off my mind and stuff.

Anyway, a final note to you all

TEST HOW LONG IT TAKES YOU TO GET TO SLEEP TONIGHT!!!! LETS SEE HOW FAST YOU CAN GET TO SLEEP!!!!

muhahaha

Tophat665 04-22-2003 06:52 PM

If I check the clock to see when I fell asleep, I never get to sleep. If I don't, I have no way of knowing.

napking 04-22-2003 08:22 PM

out like a light if i'm sleeping by myself. a little while longer if i'm with the girlfriend.

John_Gault 04-22-2003 09:50 PM

I get the same thing as arael. If everything is going reasonably smoothly in life I'm out like a light inside of 5 minutes. But if I've got big problems I fret over them for hours before I finally just pass out from exhaustion.

Also, I will go through stretches where I will wake up at exactly the same time in the morning (say 4:47) for weeks at a time even though my alarm doesn't go off until 6:15. And I also always wake up two or three minutes before my alarm goes off. What percentage of ya'll have this kind of experience?

Frosstbyte 04-22-2003 10:01 PM

I'm an awful awful sleeper. It usually takes a solid half hour for me to fall asleep under the best of conditions and sometimes hours. ::sigh:: So it goes

LordEden 04-22-2003 10:04 PM

30-40 pages of a book, give or take how tired I am at the time I lay my head down.

Baricua2782 04-22-2003 11:31 PM

anywhere from instantaneous to hours. I can't really control it, it just happens

snowy 04-23-2003 12:05 AM

Sometimes it seems like forever! Usually takes about 20 mins, less if I've been drinking. Masturbation before bedtime also helps :D

KillerYoda 04-23-2003 12:10 AM

Thanks to Jolt cola, sleep is now obsolete.

sapiens 04-25-2003 09:22 AM

Maybe 45 minutes, but every few months I'll have a night when it takes me 5 hours to fall asleep.

troit 04-25-2003 01:17 PM

Lately not too long -- but that's only because the tiredness is due to the self-medication of alcohol. Without the alcohol my mind reels and then I can just forget about getting any sleep that night. After about 4 hours of sleep though I wake up and can't get back to bed for a good 1 1/2 to 2 hours, you know right about that time I need to get back up for work.... Go figure.

viejo gringo 04-25-2003 01:57 PM

Just drop my pants or have something touch my back---

then we be done---

b1m2x3 04-25-2003 02:00 PM

i sit there for about 2 hours staring at the ceiling. I just cant fall asleep. Most of the time i will get up and go back into the chat, and then try again...
i usually get to sleep around 3 ish. I am messed up....

Same here.....I hate it....of course when I wake up like that I realize I have to use the bathroom, I get up and go, then I feel cheated from sleep....

Since I started my new job, I've been exhausted.
Alpha phi works 3rd , so I don't go to sleep until he leaves..I have to get up at 5 am so I get about 6 hours sleep ...sometimes less...so usually when I lay down to sleep it only takes a few minutes for me to conk out....

WhoaitsZ 04-25-2003 08:02 PM

sleep????????wtf is sleep?

three to six hours. i have insomnia and a few other factors. normally between 3 and 5 am.......

every four to six weeks, however, i'll fall asleep EARLY. like 11pm and sleep all night...... then i'm good to go again.

BubblegumTeflon 04-26-2003 06:32 AM

10-30min. If I'm excited about something then I can't get to sleep until I wind down. Usually I can make myself forget about whatever exciting thing I was thinking about before I conk out.

Spanky Johnson 04-26-2003 07:09 AM

I 've found that the only way I can keep from lying awake worrying about things is to wait until I can barely keep my eyes open before lying down to sleep. Once I reach that point, I'm nearly always asleep within 2-3 minutes.

splck 04-26-2003 07:16 AM

I'm asleep in less than 5 minutes. It's been this way my whole life. The only time I stay awake is if I'm going to a new school or new job in the am, but that was 15 years ago, so no big deal.

yournamehere 04-26-2003 07:30 AM

Very seldom does it take longer than 5 minutes.
I've had insomnia before, though, and my symapathy to any who suffers from it niw.
