This guy stole my suicide idea.

Cops subdue sword-swinging man - BostonHerald.com

Quote:
A dramatic showdown between cops and a suicidal man ended without major bloodshed despite a three-story plummet through a closed window and some frightening swordplay on the street.

The man, whose name was withheld, attacked cops with a medium-sized samurai sword, police said, repeatedly lunging at them and shouting, “Kill me!”

“This situation could have ended a lot differently had it not been for the professionalism and restraint shown by the officers on B-2,” said Boston patrolmen’s union President Thomas Nee.

Police were called to the 26-year-old’s home about 5 p.m. Cops called for backup and tried to kick down the door. As one officer walked outside, the suspect came crashing through a closed third-floor window, bounced off an awning, hit the ground and ran.

Cops chased him until he spun around, sword drawn, near Washington Park. With more than 20 cops, guns drawn, around him, he repeatedly charged, shouting “Shoot me! Kill me!” police said.

Sgt. Thomas Teahan sneaked up and tackled him. The suspect, who was treated for minor injuries, is being held at Bridgewater State Hospital.

THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!

But seriously... if you are dead set on taking yourself out, what a way to (try) to go.

He should have added a car chase, maybe a mexican stand-off or two, a few explosions, and sex with Amy Smart, and it would have been epic.

I don't get cops! They'll run over kids, kick children because they called him "dude", kick a gang banger when he/she is down, but wont shoot a guy who's lunging at them with a samurai butcher knife?? WTF man?!?!

To be fair, he only had a "medium-sized samurai sword." If it was the large one, things may have gone differently.

No dai-katana, no suicide-by-cop. It's the law.

...

Tackling is a little silly. I would have double tased that idiot... John Woo style. LTL shotgun rounds would have been good, too.

I say suicide by cop is pretty gutless. If this guy is a true man he'll hang himself in prison using a noose made out of his own hair.

Underwear waistband is more common.

...

Is there really a manly way to kill yourself these days? I don't see anybody shoving a knife into their guts anymore or setting themselves on fire. It's all gun in the mouth or pills or jumping off a bridge. Suicide by cop is popular because it creates the kind of dramatic showdown that dipshits like samurai-boy desire. Cops, despite Gucci's belief, don't actually like hurting people. It's bad for their soul, too much paperwork, and gets to be expensive.

I had a similar reaction, but as my cynicism died down I thought that these cops were just better people than I expected. I hope more cops are like this than the others that seem to be in love with tazers and their AUTHORIT-EYE!!!!

It could also be that people are more sympathetic with the insane than they are with outright disrespectful turds.

In this case, deadly force was certainly an option, and the cops showed a great deal of professionalism and experience by de-escalating in this manner. Furthermore, a tazer would have been a good solution. Cops could have held their distance, and effectively disarmed him.

Back on topic, did anyone get video of this whole thing? That would be awesome to see!!!

so... let's get this straight.

Problem: Disturbed Polish Man in an airport confused as hell
Solution: Taze to death

-=-

Problem: Sword wielding suicidal manic on street who just jumped out of a window.
Solution: Do not kill.

I dunno, they say that people who tell someone that they intend to kill themselves doesn't actually intend to do it. The ones who really intend to do it just do it. This seems like a pretty low-percentage way to off yourself to me. This was probably just a call for help.......

An insanely fucking misguided call for help.

To be more clear, I think the police here went out of their way to keep this dude safe, and they would have been justified to use more aggressive methods, including a taser. I don't know if I would have blamed them for shooting him. I do think people have more sympathy for the mentally afflicted than they would for someone who was just acting like a jackass.

I kind of feel sorry for the cops in these cases. I mean being targets to these guys who want to be offed. Kevorkian was at least willing to help when people asked him.
