Chess
Are you a chest player?:)
ME: NO, I just dont know how to play it, I tried. ---------- Post added at 02:40 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:51 AM ---------- Iam so sorry for spelling chess wrong, I cant play it or spell it Iam just dumm when it comes to this game. |
I can, and used to play it fairly often. I wasn't ever particularly good because it takes too much effort to be good, and it just wasn't something that interested me enough to put a lot of effort into.
It's fun if you have someone at exactly the same skill-level, but because it is a game of skill, playing someone who can beat you every time, or whom you beat every time, gets old pretty fast. |
I'm a chest player.
|
I used to be, but it's been a while now. I was never an expert, but I could hold my own at the high school level. Over time now I think I actually prefer Go, but haven't played it enough to get good at it.
|
I taught my ex to play. We played many a game until I noticed him becoming anxious when I won. He tried very hard back then to learn stategy and play well.
Now? He's writing a book about chess. |
My friend and I like to drink and play chess. We play a lot of strategy games on the PC, so chess is a fun way to get that same feel of controlling armies without having to break out the PCs.
I'm always down to play, I'm decent at it, I just don't think that far ahead. |
I fuckin' love chess. I am not good at it though ....
|
I used to play a lot and was quite good at it, but haven't played seriously in awhile. It's a great game to develop strategy, analytical thinking and teaches patience. I loved playing against people who all they knew was to work for a mate. They always were easily directed.
|
Spinelust is a ruthless chess player. She's kicked my ass numerous times on Yahoo! chess.
|
Video games come and go, but chess? Chess is immortal.
|
Chess is awesome... just wish I was better at it.
I spent a lot of time playing chess in coffeeshops in Amsterdam, great vibe for it. |
Chess is a classic and timeless.
I love the game, trying to figure 6 moves ahead and all. I taught my son to play at an early age and we played it often. I think we stopped playing when he could beat me consistently. It just wasn't as much fun anymore. :) |

I don't get to play it too often because a lot of other people don't play, but I do enjoy it. It's one of those things I wish I did more often. |
I like the idea of chess more than the actual game itself. I'm a pretty terrible player... after a significant amount of time has passed, I start subconsciously (or if it's been a REALLY long time, very consciously) giving away pieces. I don't think I've played since high school.
Now, if you're up for Boggle or Scrabble, I'm totally in. |
I love to play wiss zee chest... yez I dew!

My brother was an awesome chess player and played in and won tournaments. He tried to teach me to play, but I never found it to my liking. I don't think I have the patience for it. |

Some unsolicited advice from a son who has been there. Don't stop playing because he can beat you, it taught me my dad hated to lose and liked to play only when he could beat me. I lost some respect for him and we have never been that close again. It wasn't winning or losing that was fun, it was playing my dad and having "quality time" with him. |
well said Pan
I like to play chess. I'm far from an expert, but I can beat most people in my area and all my friends. Of course, I love strategy games. =) My main game is checkers, which I use to play a lot in tournaments.... and before you make assumptions, checkers is just as difficult as chess when both players understand the strategy involved. |
I've never learned Chess, but my brother was taught by our old mailman's blind son.
Always thought that was cool. (he had a collection of Braille Playboys) |

I know how to play but have never been much good.
I won the chess tournament at school at age 10... that was my high point. I played for the first time in about 35years last weekend on FB, and Im 2-2 so far. I dont have the patience or intellect to be a good player, but I have the low cunning to beat ordinary players more times than they beat me. |

I just wish checkers would get the respect that chess gets. Comments like "this isn't checkers" or "this is chess, not checkers" really piss me off. It is obvious when a person makes a comment like this that they have no idea how much there really is to checkers. They require similar strategical qualities and look ahead skills, but from what I've read, chess tends to be more analytical, while checkers tends to be more math based. The best checker players who ever lived were all good at math. The best that ever lived had his PhD in Mathematics. I wish I could explain more, but if anybody was truly interested, I'm sure I could find several sources and interested readings on this. Sorry to thread drift. I really like chess too, but everybody already knows all about chess. |

maybe start a thread on checkers, or maybe a checkers vs chess thread. i'd love to hear it |

Our mailman moved into our neighborhood when I was a kid, around 11 or 12. We had already been friendly with him, but then we made friends with his family after their move. His son was in his mid-twenties and lived at home to help care for his mentally-challenged sister. (both the nicest people ever) Anyway, my brother learned chess from him, and I learned to be disappointed early on in sex when I discovered the lack of pictures in a Braille Playboy. (don't worry, I found a regular weather-beaten Playboy out in the woods some time later on ;)) If a blind man says he only reads Playboy for the articles, you can take that to the bank. Oh yeah, as to checkers, I had another friend who would continuously kick my ass at checkers. He made checkers a thing of beauty. Unfortunately, he died in high school when his 4wd flipped over and crushed him. I like watching chess and checkers matches, but I can only play checkers. Not that well, either. |

Yeah, I play all right. I have the mind for it. Wish I knew more people I could play casually with though, and someone genius level to teach me some of the really cool stuff.
|
Loved to play chess back in middle school. Fun amount of strategy and skill involved. My favorite part about it was playing fast games, where you had to think on your feet so to speak and make moves without having large amounts of time to think about them. I really hated playing when the matches got to serious, to me it was just a fun game to play not some serious endeavor.
|
I was in chess club. Despite being such an obvious nerd, I was also athletic. I went to a small school, we had to multi-task.
Now I never get the time to play nor do I know anybody who plays. People set up tables at Dupont Circle every day, but I'm not into stranger chess. Probably get an STD that way. |
My SO and I have a chess set and we like to play from time to time. Not often, though, because he is really good (used to play in competitions) and well, I'm not nearly that awesome!
|
I actually used to be really good at chess when I was a kid. I had a good friend from school who was ranked 2nd or 3rd best in the province so my elementary chess team ended up going to a lot of tournaments. About four or five years ago I went through another chess phase and started playing it online with Yahoo but it just wasn't the same. Eitherway though it's an awesome game, and if I ever end up finding a board and a challenger I'm always down for a game.

With chess, however, the variables are STAGGERING! I take eons before I decide on a proper move that will both effect offense and defense at the same time. Even then when I am playing with a novice, I end up overthinking it and been defeated. Chess IS harder than checkers. No matter how you want to spin it. |
I love playing chess! Can anyone recommend a good website for playing with real people...for free? I've never played any games online...well, except slingo and tetris eons ago when I was first introduced to computers.
We have a chess club in my area that meets each week at a Bruegger's Bagels...maybe I should try that. |

It really wasn't that serious with him though, we moved on to a game called Mastermind, and within weeks were on Supermastermind : http://www.abstractstrategy.com/super-mstrmnd.jpg And there is always Stratego, another favorite of ours. I'm lucky that at 17, my son still wants to hang with Mom sometimes. |
xerxys, I took your quote to the other thread, so as to no longer disrupt this thread and look forward to seeing you there

Mastermind and Stratego 2 very nice games. Loved Stratego. I wouldn't say lucky... sounds like a good kid that has a good mom, very rare to find. Very nice to see. |
using the chess app on facebook, you can play turn based, which is where you basically can make your move whenever you log in (or whenever it was your turn if you get an opponent that is active enough to make more than one move in a day)
as expected, the games would take much longer, but you would have plenty of time to think and could play lots of games at once with multiple people |
I love Chess. For so many reasons; for its ability to transcend time, like mentioned above. It's crazy to think of games happening 200, 300 years ago that we still have record of. And not just who played and when, but every move they made. For the strategy of the game that only comes out as you focus on certain things.. like realizing the genius of the movement of a knight, and how it so compliments the movements of other pieces on the board. Or the nature of rooks.. quite powerful, but nearly impossible to bring to control the center without sacrificing a lesser 'pawn' or taking multiple moves to get into position. Or the awesome power of the queen to make nearly every move on the board, but for the same reason the biggest target on the board. People willing to sacrifices their knights and rooks and bishops just to get a chance at the queen. The power of the king in the end game.. a piece forced from check to check or into hiding in openings and mid game that gets very powerful in the pawn-pushing end game.
Anyone use chess.com? They have excellent "Online Chess" which is the 'correspondence chess' where you have 3 days, etc to make a single move, or "Live Chess", where you're able to play immediately against others. Truthfully I'm not that good at Chess, but I do love the thought process involved. |
Chess frustrates me... but this song kicks ass.
I get my kicks ABOVE the waistline, sunshine. |
I experienced overwhelming disappointment when I realized this thread was not about the musical Chess.
I enjoy the game chess. I play it, though poorly. I rarely win. I do not subscribe to any specific strategies. I enjoy watching people play chess in city parks. One of my best memories involves a rather large chess set in a courtyard in Vienna where my husband played against a German Physicist, and won. |
btw, if anybody wants to add the chess app on facebook and play some turn based games, then I'm game - I'm pretty active, so I'll make a minimum of a move per day, but usually more
|
I love Chess... the game and the musical :)
|
I used to play a lot back in middle school, and my freshman year of high school. Hadnt played since then, until thanksgiving when some of my girlfriend's friends convinced me to play with them. They're supposedly huge chess nerds, and introduced me to Bughouse chess, which was a lot of fun actually.

I'm a pretty big fan of chess. That's not to say I'm any good, though. I used to play a lot in high school when I knew people who played. I've moved a few times since then and don't know anyone who really plays anymore so I'm stuck playing on my phone or against one of those talking chess boards. I have a very hard time with the middle part of the game and I seem to lose more often than I win against a computer.
|
I love chess. One of my favorite games to play. Though I'm not very good and want to get better.
