Need help from anyone who lives/works in Germany

I tried a thing on yahoo.de I found, but I want to check the result I got there cos I was quite surprised by it.

For a single male, if you make 38,000 Euro per year, what would you take home after tax each month?

The Yahoo thing gave me a result of approx 1800 Euro per month - which is a lot more tax than I pay now. Obviously I don't expect each tax system to be the same, but its a lot different to the tax I pay in the UK

Germany Tax Laws Tax System Germany. - WorldWide-Tax.com

Between this page and Wikipedia, it looks like you'd be in the 14% bracket, plus 5.5% solidarity surcharge.
