writing on money

writing on money is illegal and wrong and stupid and gay. only some sad pathetic wanna be artist would deface a $1, $5, or $20 dollar bill to get his little gay ass message across to others.

for example...i would NEVER draw glasses and a mustache and a goatee on a one dollar bill. also, i would NEVER draw a big afro on george washington or abe lincoln.

i also would NEVER write little messages in the border on the bottom of a bill, for example "caution: this won't buy you health, happiness, or friends" or some other urbane witty pithy comment meant to jar the masses out of their trance like everyday state and attempt to make them think for themselves or just make them think, period. i would never do that, cause it's illegal and wrong.

that said....

have you ever written on currency? have you ever seen a bill with something written on it? (other than a phone number. that's just pathetic. and i don't care about the "where's george" stamp)

what did you see written on a bill? (you had to see it, it would be wrong if you personally wrote on it)......

(i was gonna take pictures of bills i happened to have with writing on them, but the pics didnt come out all that well. )

Reese 06-22-2009 10:46 PM

I called a phone number written on a dollar once, it was disconnected. I was disappointed but also relieved because I had nothing to say.

Charlatan 06-22-2009 11:26 PM

This is a pretty common on in Canada. Wilfred Laurier on the Five.

Writing on money is illegal/wrong/stupid/high-spirited/cheery/lively & exhuberant?

hmmmm.....

Halanna 06-23-2009 07:24 AM

I've seen written really tiny around the edge something like: Whoever shall find this bill shall have a blessed day.

I saw a $20 once that said "Where have I been?" Various people wrote States, cities, etc.

I've seen smiley faces, little animals, doodles, etc.

Within the last 3-4 years though I honestly don't carry cash or have a need for it. With debit cards, credit cards and the internet for shopping, my need for physical cash is almost zero. The only time I get cash is if Son needs something from school that is cash only. Although we do keep a rather large sum of cash in the house in a safe in case of an emergency. That's different though.

snowy 06-23-2009 07:24 AM

I have a dollar bill someone put cool stamps/stencils on--George has a cannabis leaf over his face with a little bubble that says "I grew hemp". There are little 420 stamps on either side of George, a fancy-looking stamp with a more ornate leaf over a map of the world, and on the flipside of the bill, another leaf that says "Liberty for Cannabis".

I keep it on display on my bookcase.

Santa dollars and there ilk aside;
doesn't anyone else have a tad of irksome with the word 'gay'
being used
as a pejorative, in the OP?

Funny, I didn't know money-writing was such a big problem in the same-sex oriented community...

Sorry to be a ballbuster, this particular choice of words is just a pet peeve of mine.

Tully Mars 06-23-2009 09:30 AM

I've done this, had no idea I was gay. Imagine my surprise.

ItWasMe 06-23-2009 09:50 AM

I had a bill once with "Happy Birthday" written on it. It wasn't for my birthday; I received the money as change somewhere.

I don't particularly like defaced money, and have never written on a bill. I had trouble getting a vending machine to accept one with writing on it, but I'm not sure if that was why.

It was the only thing I read of the OP.. I assumed the caliber of the following sentences was indicated by the word choice in the first sentence and hit BACK.

This is possibly the worst opening line of a thread started on TFP ever. I feel as if I should give you an award.

I've seen lots of those "Where's George?" stampings on singles.

Surely I'm gay 'cause I love to track where they've been and where they go.

little_tippler 06-23-2009 03:06 PM

Actually, some British artists have done just this. They would take people's bills at an art fair and draw on them. The money became even more valuable than it's original monetary value because it had an original by these artists, and a limited edition piece at that. Here you go:

Bureau of Engraving and Printing

its only illegal if it makes the bill unfit for further circulation...

wooÐs 06-23-2009 05:35 PM

I got a hold of a dollar bill the other day with a web address written on it.

I thought it was brilliant.

Grancey 06-23-2009 06:19 PM

Years ago, in junior high, I had a dollar bill that had a zip code type number written on it. I called the post office and asked if they could give me the location for that zip code. (This was years before the internet) Oviedo, Florida. I thought that was so cool.

Psycho Dad 06-23-2009 06:42 PM

I was only interested in wheresgeorge for a day or two and forgot my login and password. I'm obviously not gay. But did that one event make be bi-curious?

dd3953 06-23-2009 08:17 PM

i have had 2 or 3 'where's george' bills, sadly enough, at the time, i didn't have easy enough access to the internet.

i have also had one that said 'where's the love?' i liked that one enough to copy it a few times, in my opinion it was a good question.

edit: and i am gay :)

Martian 06-23-2009 08:38 PM

Writing on money makes me gay?

Well, shit. Magpie and I need to have a talk.

(I hate to harp on that, but it amuses me to no end. Lesson: Drunk posting, bad!)

You know, you could probably save yourself a lot of time and heartbreak by just quitting writing on money. Because the only other way to cure teh ghey is to go to one of those "pray it out" bible camps. But won't those guys feel silly when they realize that gayness is caused by writing on money and not by, you know, buttsecks with another dude.

Thus endeth my furthing of the derailment of this thread. So sayeth the sheppard.

squeeeb 06-24-2009 06:30 AM

oh wow, lots to catch up on, here goes....

cybermiek - that was sort of warholian/bukowsiesque of you. awesome...

charlatan - now i gotta see if lincon on our $5 could be made into a spock....

ring - all those things...and MORE!

itwasme - i don't think writing will cause a machine to not accept a bill...

twistedmosaic - AWESOME! kinda like getting the award for coming in last in the Tour De France....at least i excel at something. even if i am excelling at sucking...

Martian - drunk posting may be bad, but it sure seems right....

and to anyone who i offended by using the word "gay" without it meaning "happy" "homosexual" "bright or lively" or "given to social pleasures"....this sounds like your problem, not mine. i hope you can work through it and someday realize many words in the english language can have more than one meaning. although according to the dictionary, gay also does mean licentious, dissolute, ungoverned and incontinent, so maybe i was using it like that.

Jinn 06-24-2009 07:39 AM

You can only go around in this world declaring that your problems are in fact someone else's problem for so long before it comes back and bites you in the ass.

Respect, particularly where sensitive self-identifying words are in play, is a sign of maturity and mutual respect. Do what you will with that.

There are plenty of words with multiple meanings which are avoided by the polite (or well-meaning) with a vocabulary large enough to select a more appropriate word. If 'gay' is truly the only word you can place in that position, then so be it, but perhaps investing time in a larger vocabulary is in order. There are plenty of words which could've been used in its place which added to your argument rather than detracted from it.

squeeeb 06-24-2009 08:00 AM

jinn - perhaps its best if you just never read another thing i post. you will be that much less offended.

-+-{Important TFP Staff Message}-+-
The discussion of the use or misuse of one adjective in the OP is now over. If you want to discuss that topic, create a new thread.

seriously.

Jozrael 06-24-2009 08:36 AM

Squeeeb: You've been just racking up the respect points in the past couple days with your threads on what you're not comfortable posting, etc. Very mature.

That being said...this thread.

Many words have more than one meaning. However, gay used the way you used it is a slur, much as the n-word or other such socially unacceptable words (there's a difference, yes, since in one you are deliberately insulting someone, and in this it is just casual use). If you want to be one who feels comfortable going around saying the n-word, and saying to peeps who take umbrage "Hey, it's your problem, not mine"...then fine. Just realize people may radically redefine their perception of you.

Gay, used pejoratively, is just as much a slur as the n-word, IMO. Am I offended persay by the use of it? Not so much because of it's unfortunate widespread usage. I'm just more surprised that you don't see it in a negative light at all.

EDIT: Wow, 3-4 posts while I was composing this one ><. I can get rid of this if you like.

EDIT2: Looking at the timestamps it seems I hadn't refreshed the page ><. I hadn't read anything since Squeeb's post two hours ago ><

i also enjoy bending it as well.

really? are you serious?

i write on money all the damn time. that is what the thread was about. due to my drunken stupor, i thought it would entertaining and funny to weakly disclaim my love of writing on money to talk about writing on money.

currency, money, bills. they are perfect for spreading art virus. think how many people see that bill, think of all the hands it goes through, people see something written on it and they read it and pass it on. what a great way to spread art, wisdom, stupid humor, whatever. it's the original internet forum. sort of.

Xerxys 06-24-2009 11:06 AM

Dude, I swear to god it wasn't that obvious!! Even I thought you were serious!

Ahh, he's yanking our chains again isn't he?!!

squeeeb 06-24-2009 11:11 AM

oh come ON!!!!

damn sarcasm filter was on? i thought by capitalizing the NEVER you would realize that word came with a wink. i thought saying how i was gonna take pictures of the bills would clue you in to the fact that i have a bunch of bills written on them because *I* wrote on them.

damn, my sarcasm was weak and failing.

i will apologize for that totally.

oh, and as far as dollar bill origami - giving a stripper a one dollar crane is waaaaaay cooler than just giver her a dollar.

Love it!

I like reading writing on money, but I have never written on any myself.

When I was a Jr in high school a boy that liked me wrote his number on a dollar and gave it to me.

Shell 06-24-2009 12:29 PM

...i'm sure you all have heard about making a
ring out of a dollar bill but here is the "how to".
It really impresses kids.
