counting to 1000

so today i sat and counted to 1000, just to do it. it's harder than it sounds. actually saying the numbers (four hundred seventy two) is almost work, and it takes concentration, and you think "why the fuck am i doing this?"

but when i was done, i realized how large 1000 really truly is, and i felt a sense of accomplishment, as if i had actually done something, i felt....good.

try it. it takes about 20 minutes, and you can do it just about anywhere.

if you do try it, i'd like to hear how you felt, what you thought about it.

wooÐs 06-08-2009 08:32 PM

It's because you don't have a tv.

Xerxys 06-08-2009 08:36 PM

No man, 1000 is not a huge number ... ohh, get a TV, no seriously, its $20 from craigslist.org

wooÐs 06-08-2009 08:40 PM

Yeah but now they got the whole digital thing going on so it's gonna cost a bit more. Maybe we can start a collection perhaps?

CinnamonGirl 06-08-2009 11:55 PM

Noooo...don't get a tv. Counting is much more fun. :)

Anyway, I haven't counted to 1000 recently. I do remember road-tripping to Indiana, though, and singing 99 Bottles of Beer... and going into negative numbers afer we got to zero. Good times.

Charlatan 06-09-2009 04:35 AM

I counted but used a calculator...

I was allowed to use a calculator, yes?

biznatch 06-09-2009 09:29 AM

Yes, but writing a short program and watching the numbers 1 to 1000 displayed on your computer screen is much less time-consuming, and cooler, IMO. :D

highthief 06-09-2009 10:13 AM

My 4 year old counted to 1000 the other day. Seriously.

shakran 06-09-2009 10:31 AM

Bah. Count to a googol. Then I'll be impressed ;)

dlish 06-09-2009 11:03 AM

meh..i counted to ten thousand once...now thats an accomplishment...

these days, theres a suburb thats got 33 speed humps in one street.. a family orientated suburb... i only ever got to count all 33 once

vanblah 06-09-2009 11:09 AM

I counted to 1000 but I did it in binary.

squeeeb 06-09-2009 02:42 PM

ok, i mean this with all respect. you are all a bunch of tards. i try to set an example, offer you something easy that might possibly enhance your life just a tad, maybe take you out of your routine, get you to expand your horizons imperceptibly, and you all mock me. all of you. a bunch of mocking mockers from mocksville mocking it up.

(i'm just jealous cause i can't mock me along with you all)

ASU2003 06-09-2009 03:07 PM

// C++ Code Example:
// Counting From 0 To 1000

#include <stdlib.h>
using namespace std;

void main()
{
// declare a variable
int i;
for(i= 0; i < 1001; i++)
cout << i << endl;
}

(It's been a while since I've programed in C++, but this should be close)

I just counted to 10 before posting this reply.

you are awesome, but you knew that already.

Cynthetiq 06-10-2009 09:14 PM

that's why I look at the 1 million pennies site from time to time. Just to remind me what large numbers really are. Big numbers are big. We tend to trivialize them because it's easier to understand just how big a number really is if we make it seem smaller than what it should be.

I did.
But hearing that others make the same observation just makes me stronger. :o

Xerxys 06-10-2009 10:13 PM

hehe, cynthetic, whats with the penies ... a thousand pennies send my brain into naughty overdrive!!

POEPLE, 1000 is NOT a huge number. Things go into the thousands daily. 1000 pennies isn't so much, heck, even a thousand dollars won;t last me a week nowadays ... I need tens of thousands of dollars ... millions even. Hey don't let the number stop there, as long it's in the positive, keep it in form of dollars coming.

Cynthetiq 06-10-2009 10:15 PM

hmmmm... $1,000 dollars can last me quite some time.

any time you don't think you want $1,000 dollars or even 1000 pennies :) send them to me. I'm happy to have them.

squeeeb 06-11-2009 02:19 AM

really, sit down and count out loud to 1000. it's an interesting experiment, and it does show you how significant 1000 is

Charlatan 06-11-2009 04:21 AM

I went a step further and mocked you a 1000 times...

We have hinted here that the value 1,000 is rather relative.

Xerxys, you say it isn't a big number. Well, whether it's big or small depends on the subject. One thousand pennies, as we've mentioned, is $10. A small sum, indeed. However, the power of 1,000 suns? Nothing short of sublime.

I'll never count to 1,000 in my lifetime. That's why computing machines were invented. It's also why we use addition and multiplication.

Come on, people....

wooÐs 06-11-2009 09:07 AM

Who would have thought a topic like this could be so entertaining.

I once counted to a 1000 when I was a kid. Took all afternoon cause I'd start and stop. Did it in a sing-song too. Probably drove my parents crazy.

OzOz 06-13-2009 03:55 PM

Been there, done that. I counted to 32000 when I was seven, just for something to do.

I was one weird kid.

But your other self can!

I have counted 99 Bottles of beer on the wall at least 100 times, I think...I'm not sure....I don't remember...blackout....

HockeyGuy 06-14-2009 03:26 PM

It really is harder than you'd think, but yes it does put it into perspective!

bobnick 06-17-2009 06:46 PM

Ahhhh, i love this forum. I dont know anywhere else where a topic like this would come up.
Why dont you try writing down each number until 1,000. My childhood friend would have to do that as punishment for various things.
