Women in Russia Denied Access to 456 different professions??

So, hot on the heels of International Women's Day, I come across this:

I know many countries still have many women's rights issues, but I'm shocked at the dimension of this problem for Russian women. I mean, 456 professions? And the craziness is that for this particular case, they only changed the law in 2000! Before that, women in Russia could drive the subway trains. What happened I wonder.

Even stranger is the total lack of justification as to why she should be denied the right, even after going to court over it. Surely anyone reasonable can see that, regardless of being a man or a woman, everyone deserves the opportunity to show they are capable.

How do women and men's reactions to a hard job differ so much? I really don't understand. Not that I want to drive a train or be a fireman, but this is ridiculous.

Only sore point I have with the particular situation, is that she sued to get the salary she might have earned on the job. That's just...opportunistic.

I can perfectly understand women not getting the jobs where brute physical strength is required. Firemen, rescue workers, etc. Everything else, well, I guess they have their reasons. I can't speculate on what those might be.

Hmmm, LoganSnake, I kinda don't see your perspective. I mean, I do understand that the differences between men and women are scientific but it can't apply to ALL women. Surely over the years we have proved that all people are different in so many ways hence they require equal chances to prove their worth.

This situation is just wrong.

I know nothing about trains, but why do I doubt this so heavily, will return after some research has been conducted!!

So have them do the same tests as men with the same standards. Problem solved.

Sure, but until that happens...

Women haven't been able to vote in this country some 60 years ago. That's nothing. Give it time.

When your economy goes to hell, I'm guessing unemployed men are a bigger problem then unemployed women. I'm not sure if the government would actively favor hiring males, but it kind of makes sense to me if they did.

I think there are some jobs which are gender specific.

A man should not be allowed to a mid wife

A woman should not serve in infantary of an army.

(as an example)

I am sad to hear that women in Russia are running into a brick wall when it comes to finding gainful employment in a male-dominated field. I find it even more frustrating that some male members on this board seem to agree that such discrimination is acceptable.

The vast majority of obstetricians in the united states are male.
I would be more comfortable with a man in that role than a woman. They are less likely to bring their personal experience(s) and bias to the situation.
